Here: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35948114/#:~:text=Numerous%20studies%20have%20shown%20that,%2C%20mutagens%2C%20and%20endocrine%20disruptors.

Not only is it bad for the environment but it's probably bad for your health too.

The issues are still being investigated, but:

"Numerous studies have shown that chemicals identified in artificial turf, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalates, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are known carcinogens, neurotoxicants, mutagens, and endocrine disruptors."

I genuinely can't understand why people rip up grass and put this awful plastic down anyway. Looks awful and it is awful

DataNotLore · 28/05/2023 16:56

I can't understand why people are happy to expose themselves and their families to this

DH wanted astro turf when we moved to our current house and were thinking about what to do with the garden. I said no as it gets too hot in the summer for our pets to walk on safely, he hadn't realised it was an issue. I hate the stuff anyway, it costs an arm and a leg and generally looks shite unless it's on a very small area.

Lockheart · 28/05/2023 17:01

Don't forget it burns skin in the summer with how hot it gets. It's totally unsuitable for well, anything really.

Cluborange666 · 28/05/2023 17:13

I wrote to my MP about it (Kate Green) about two years ago. She took it up with the minister for the environment at the time (can’t remember who but obviously Tory). They replied to me with a lot of guff about how they have no interest in interfering with people’s right to choose their own home environment etc etc and how actually the Tories do lots of great stuff for our environment.
I live overlooking a park with lots of nature yet half my neighbours have paved or astroturfed gardens, moan about the trees and one even has a full plastic hedge at the front of his house (which blew away on a particularly windy day!)
Sometimes I think we just don’t deserve this beautiful planet.

Whatt · 28/05/2023 17:14

I work in a lot of nurseries that have thus in their garden instead of grass.

RosettaTheGardenFairy · 28/05/2023 17:16

I love when you tell folk with it that it looks shit, they always come back with ' oh no we've got the expensive stuff, looks amazing, can't tell the difference'. Yes, you really can. It all looks cheap, nasty, plastic shiny shit, and the damage it does is beyond disgraceful. Not in the least surprised they're realising it's toxic for humans too.

I know right! Theirs looks shit they just spent loads on it.

And nobody likes admitting they fell for a scam

Why anyone wants a plastic carpet in their garden I can’t understand. Awful tat. Shocking for wildlife.

Awrite · 28/05/2023 17:23

Another hater here. I also hate the disappearance of front gardens to car spaces.

I understand the reasons people do these things and I recognise my privilege in not needing to but it upsets me nonetheless.

cuckyplunt · 28/05/2023 17:24

We should encourage the people who have it to chew bits off it..

megletthesecond · 28/05/2023 17:24

I asked our councils climate change team to consider an awareness campaign about how bad that plastic grass is. They replied and aren't interested. what's the bloody point in the team then?

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 28/05/2023 17:26

Because I don’t have time to look after grass. It turns into an overgrown eyesore. The artificial looks the same as it did the day I put it down 2 years ago.

Im sorry it upsets you all but trust me, my neighbours are probably immensely relieved

This!!!
I don't have the time to do what needs to be done and I need the garden useable for the children to play in.

I'm sat here chuckling away about your man with the plastic hedge blowing away down the street - did someone drag it back to him? Did it have fake plastic roots? 😂

Do you honestly not care about being poisoned?

This is not hyperbole. It's reality.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 28/05/2023 17:32

Artificial grass is horrible and an environmental abomination.

I’m not sure that that abstract says what you think it does though. If you’re right, we should all be very concerned about the rubber tyre crumb used in children’s play areas.

I bet it does look the same now as it did when you put it down 2 years ago - shit then, shit now. Can't imagine your neighbours give a damn beyond their concern you'll bring the look of your neighbourhood down with a plastic tatty garden.

DataNotLore · 28/05/2023 17:33

@Juiceboxxy

It's poisonous. I genuinely don't get it.

Kids can play on grass, paving, earth... All are healthier than plastic grass

OP posts:
JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 28/05/2023 17:34

No. There are far worse things poisoning me than my plastic grass.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 28/05/2023 17:35

Bold of you to assume I live in a neighbourhood where people car that I might be bringing the look of it down with plastic grass 😂
