Had literally zero sleep and worried it will ruin our day

29 degrees in our room overnight (house is a heat trap), combined with a dreadful tickly cough that I am trying to get rid of. If I fell asleep for 45 minutes that is all I got for the whole night. I must have lived awake for the whole night. That’s never happened to me before, I’ve always had at least a couple of hours sleep no matter what the circumstance. AIBU to worry I’ll be so tired come this evening and it’ll ruin our night away? This is our first night away all year and we are supposed to be going out for food and drink, given now is 5:30 and we’re setting off in less than an hour, I’m going to be exhausted arent I?

AIBU? Will it actually be alright?

It's the nerves of going away. Im the same, been up all night as we are flying today. It won't ruin the day, you'll rally. I just need to be careful not to snap at DC. plan is to wear concealed headphones so I can't hear them!

OlivePhone · 28/05/2023 05:40

*laid awake not lived awake!

Short term tiredness will be fine, but I would try to nap for an hour at some point.

Have a short nap if you can and maybe some coffee. You will probably be surprisingly ok.

You probably got more sleep than you thought. I believe there is research that insomniacs do get more sleep than they think.

I became convinced of this one night where I really struggled to sleep and eventually woke up from dreaming that i was awake and couldn't sleep.

Ilikewinter · 28/05/2023 05:43

Sleep on the way. Its not going to kill you

Findyourneutralspace · 28/05/2023 05:43

I’ve had the odd night like this but usually pull through. A couple of coffees and once you get into being busy it just turns into a normal day. Hopefully where you’re staying will be cooler and you will have a lovely refreshing sleep tonight.

I’d invest on a fan for your bedroom though.

Nightytwine · 28/05/2023 05:46

I find drinking lots of water wakes me up throughout the day when I haven't slept enough. That and coffee lol but not too much.
Hope you have a lovely day.

We have one, a good one, but just pulls the hot air round!

Pop a tray of water (or even iced water) under your fan, it will cool the air then.

SoShallINever · 28/05/2023 06:35

You will be absolutely fine. This is quite common when you hit the menopause. I discovered you can still do a full day's work after a fully sleepless night.

Then you’re not using it correctly. Put it in front of an open window or put a bowl of ice cubes in front of it. That’s what we do here in a much warmer climate than the UK.

I sometimes have nights like this and feel better as the day goes on, have a mid afternoon slump then recover. Drink lots of water, have a cat nap if you can and you’ll be fine. Also agree you probably slept more than you thought. Enjoy your night away!

MadEyeMoodysEye · 28/05/2023 06:49

I really struggle if I've slept poorly. But just an hour's nap can make all the difference. Any chance you can sleep whilst travelling or when you get to your destination? Loads of water and fruit help too, but for me caffeine when I'm tured just makes me jittery. Hope you manage to feel ok later.

WilkinsonM · 28/05/2023 06:52

I have insomnia at times and I've had whole nights with no sleep before. The next day is hard but especially if you can rest at any point you should be ok. Also DP tells me I sleep more than I think I do - I sometimes think I haven't got to sleep until say 2am but he tells me that's not the case and I was snoring! 😆 I think I do have short bits of sleep when I'm in a bad patch and they don't register because I feel like I'm constantly awake

baddecisions11 · 28/05/2023 06:55

You'll be fine!! I have a young baby so live in a state of constant sleep deprivation, some days I wake up and think oh my I am so absolutely shattered how am I going to get through today, but come midday after I've eaten, showered and has a coffee I feel normal and awake and wouldn't even be able to sleep if I had chance too. Enjoy your time away and just try to keep hydrated and caffeinated! Xx

parrotonthesofa · 28/05/2023 07:00

You'll be fine! Youll prob feel a bit tired and spaced out at points but it won't ruin your day!
I have had many a night like this and have just learnt to think oh well I'll catch up tomorrow night. I used to get very stressed about it thinking oh god how will I cope at work I'm gonna feel terrible etc etc but was usually ok and the stressing definitely did not help matters.
Have a lovely time away!

Fam23 · 28/05/2023 07:02

As others have said, I think you’ll be fine. Especially if you’re able to keep going rather than sitting around too much. You may have slept for than you felt you did 🤞🏼

Shortpoet · 28/05/2023 07:05

I usually find the day after a bad night sleep I’m ok. It’s the following day I struggle. So if you can get a better night sleep tonight you should be ok.

My tip to stay cool is spray a sheet with water. So it it slightly damp and sleep under that. As the water evaporates it cools you.

Tunaparsnip · 28/05/2023 07:32

The feeling of having to get up after not sleeping well is horrible- especially if you have something planned that you don’t want to feel like shit for!

Like others have said, if it’s a once off you will be surprised at how ok you will feel. Try to sneak in even a 15 minute power nap later on today

CabernetSauvignon · 28/05/2023 08:09

How are you travelling? Can you sleep in the car or on the plane or whatever?

mrlistersgelfbride · 28/05/2023 08:31

You'll be fine. Strong coffee, get up and get moving and do what you need to. Drink plenty of water today. Paracetamol for a headache if you need it. You'll sleep better tonight. You might suprise yourself that you feel fine as the day goes on.
I've had plenty of days like this, sometimes full days in work and was ok.

YukoandHiro · 28/05/2023 08:36

Totally manageable especially when it's fun, not work.

I have two children who were allergic to sleep til over the age of 2. I went back to work at 11 months with each, often with not one full hour of sleep in a row. I managed fine. Amazingly, you cope.
