I hate high-waisted trousers! AIBU?

I really, really dislike the feeling of high-waisted trousers round my middle. It just feels so constrictive and uncomfortable. I much prefer trousers that sit more on your hips or mid-rise. Since it seems like you can only buy high-waisted trousers, I guess I must be weird and the only person in the world who feels like this!

AIBU to hate high-waisted trousers and where, oh where, can I buy a pair that aren't high-waisted?

Agreed. Low waisted jeans with an overhang is NOT a good look (looks down sadly at middle aged tummy).

But surely there is a difference between low waisted and mid waisted? I've never worn jeans with a low rise and never will, but I don't like high waisted either. They look great on the slim with flat stomach brigade, but I'm not one of them!

Hairbrushhandle · 28/05/2023 05:12

I have to say low rise aren't great if you have to crawl through softplay. Builders bum is highly likely.

ButterCrackers · 28/05/2023 05:16

Where are the high waist trousers? I wear these and I never find any in shops to try on.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 28/05/2023 06:07

I don't like them, the 'waist' is around my ribs, (or even just under my bra). Really uncomfortable. I'm not particularly skinny but having denim/waistband clamped around a bony bit of my body is excruciating.

HelpfulJane · 28/05/2023 06:26

Express has a variety of different cut jeans that are modern and fits nice. Check them out as well.

Tomatina · 28/05/2023 06:27

100 per cent with the OP on this. High waist jeans are from hell. Can't stand the feeling of being cut in half every time I bend over, and they are so uncomfortable if you have to sit for any length of time. I'm not overweight but have a short torso so high waists just reduce the space even more. The shops are still full of high waists, but you can still sometimes find what they call 'mid rise' jeans, which sit below your waist but above the hips. I've been buying most of my jeans second hand since the high waists took over the chain stores.

Beseen22 · 28/05/2023 07:05

Yes I cannot buy anything advertised as high waisted. I feel like there is a tight elastic band that sits exactly on my stomach and makes me feel like I'm going to vomit all day. Plus the bit that I hate isn't covered well by high waisted because the more reinforced waist band is too high. If I wear midrise that closes just at or a cm below my bellybutton all the overhang from babies and cake is well covered by the strong part of the denim.

Most places that do a range of jeans offer a midrise, M&S, H&M, Jack wills, Esprit are everywhere I've bought in last year.

whiteroseredrose · 28/05/2023 07:14

I'm the opposite. I like jeans with the button on my bellybutton. Those are just jeans.

The lower rise years were miserable for me as they kept slipping about. Unfortunately when something is in fashion it is difficult to get anything else.

High waisted jeans are what people wore in the 1970s that came up to your ribs.

I’m too bloody short for high wasted, my torso isn’t very long at all, Therefore high waisted jeans sit practically under my boobs and are so uncomfortable!

Im struggling to find low rise anywhere now. My go to were always the Top Shop Baxter jeans which are low rise but seems they don’t do them anymore so I have to get them from eBay.

This is my problem too. I’m short, but legs aren’t too short, torso on the other hand is! So not only do I hate the feeling of high waisted trousers but they look awful too. And because I’m short they tend to sit higher anyway unless I have petite trousers with a shorter rise.

Any recommendations are super welcome.

They feel like having a boa constrictor round your middle or a rope round your internal organs, squishing everything together. And no, I don't wear trousers which are several sizes too small or anything!

I'm sure I read something about M&S trousers sitting lower this week.

I also don't understand why people feel low rise/mid rise are less flattering! You don't have to expose bits of stomach if you don't want to. Well, I showed you a picture ...

It's not about exposing stomach, it's having to throttle your abdomen with fabric that bunches itself under your tummy. Nothing 'hangs off' padded hips, it slithers down unless worn so tight that it wedges itself into your flesh. The tummy bulge can then only be covered by a tent-like garment hanging loose from bust to lower hip. It just ain't worth it - I completely stopped wearing jeans & trousers while they were all low rise.

YANBU for hating them for yourself. But for pete's sake let the rest of us say why we like 'em, hanger-hips!

To be fair, I never said I wanted trousers that hang off my hips and I haven't said anything about my bodyshape or weight! I said that in the 00s, as a tween and a teen, I used to wear those trousers that hung off your hips. Nothing to do with what I'm looking for now!

I have a really short body too and I think that's where I have the issue. In relative terms I have long legs (even though I'm a short arse). It's just not cut well for me.

I have to say I get on fairly well with M and S jeans which was a bit of a revelation to me. I've previously been Diesel but I've been priced out really. Finding jeans that work for me isn't straightforward.

Strangely enough I was in Next earlier this week and bought a pair - they do low rise jeans. Including petite range. The Trafford Centre in-store range of sizes was a bit crap but I got lucky. They don't break the bank either.

Anyotherdude · 28/05/2023 09:06

Well, this is a first-world problem! I mean, you can get about 8 different styles in Sainsbury’s alone, From Mom/Girlfriend (high) to Hipsters, and everything in between. Where are you looking?

It's not actually necessary to be dismissive? I never said this was an issue akin to war and disaster, I said it was an issue for me. Call it a first world problem if you like!

I've been to all regular shops - not Sainsbury's though, because I don't tend to use it.

The problem with Sainsbury's is the lack of changing rooms post COVID.

I'm just not going to do the whole buy online nor buy in shop and take back precisely because it's such a pain in the arse to find jeans that actually fit.

I need to try before I buy.

Leftbutcameback · 28/05/2023 15:33

@RedToothBrush have they got rid of all their changing rooms? I’m sure I used one last summer (didn’t manage to actually find any good jeans though!)

SwedishEdith · 28/05/2023 15:45

Oysterbabe · 27/05/2023 21:01

I'm an apple and they're they only style I can wear, anything else falls down constantly.

Same. High waisted are just jeans to me. Anything from M&S (or Next when I used to go there) always have too much spare material at the hips for me as well.

Letsallthinkofaname · 28/05/2023 15:47

I like a high waisted pair of trousers what I don't like are crop tops or tops in general that you can't wear a bra with. Going by my local town centre it would appear prominent nipples are the current fashion trend, but not one I wish to partake in.

lljkk · 28/05/2023 15:48

meh, "high waisted" used to = "jeans".

Low rise were a nightmare for me.
I had years of struggling to find what actually suits me <shudder>

I'm sure fashions will change soon OP, and you'll find what you want, easily, everwhere.
Make sure to stock up before they go out of fashion again.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 28/05/2023 15:57

I need high waisted jeans and my stomach is not what it was pre-kids. I have a squishy middle now and high waisted just holds it in better.

Please can we not go back to the Britney Spears style where the height of the waist band was barely decent.

I buy, try on in the loo, then return whilst still in store if necessary.

Jourdain11 · 28/05/2023 15:59

I probably am confusing things by saying low-rise - I think I mean something more like mid-rise, or just on the hips rather than on the waist. I just don't like the feeling of waistbands digging into my middle. I'd rather have it under my middle!

I get fashion and everything, but why can't there be different options habitually available for different preferences? 🤔

Totally with you. I hate the constricted feeling and as a pear shape, I feel like HW just make me look bigger with all that fabric around the middle. I bought https://www.levi.com/GB/en_GB/clothing/women/superlow-bootcut-jeans/p/A46790001 a few months ago and while I wouldn't say they are "superlow", they are SO comfortable and flattering. I tried them on and within days charity shopped several pairs of uncomfortable, unflattering jeans and now pretty much just wear these and a Hush pair I also love.

A bit late to this but totally get it!

I've just stopped buying altogether, even a pair of mid rise from Mango nearly came up to my boobs. I am so sick of it. Soon they might as well come up to our necks, why not?Grin

Most hip length tops, unless baggy, don't sit flush against a chunky super high waist. It is almost impossible to achieve a sleek silhouette (if you want one). I think most high rise now are designed to go with either crop tops or stuff tucked in, which I don't like at all.

I am very slim, but with long legs/short waist. A pair of pull on cords from Toast that I bought last year came up to my nipples. There was so much flapping fabric in the front rise it looked like i was wearing a nappy, yet the fit was otherwise perfect.

There's always a few snippy replies on these kinds of threads, no idea why. High rise has just been growing higher for almost ten years. Why the idea of those of us who don't suit them wishing to buy mid rise instead gets them so riled up is mystifying. Who cares?

I used to have some great jeans by Joules, they were a true mid rise and sat perfectly just below my belly button. They were not remotely similar to the super low rise of the noughties, which many on this thread can't seem to grasp. There are next to no mid rise in the stores, no matter how many people keep twittering on about 'variety'.
You might find some lower rise cargo's at Urban Outfitters, and a few low rise flares at H&M, but that's it. And they're shite.

I want a well made wool or linen trouser with a mid rise - seemingly impossible.
I have no choice but to wear high rise if I want to wear shorts right now either. Today I wore my denim ones with a linen tee and whenever the tee blew against me in the breeze you could see the outline of a chunky button fastening right below my boobs. It makes me feel like a toddler.
