AIBU to beg for no more balloon releases

Why is it that at the times of the worst tragedy so many people still think it is OK to release dangerous litter into the sky? Surely in every group who plan these events there will be at least one person who understands the implications and can push for an alternative?
That's it really. Don't tell me people need to grieve - there are plenty of other ways to signal your grief, if you feel the need to do that. Does anyone want the memorial to their loved one be tainted by - just one real life example - a dead donkey foal with a balloon and the string in her gut? It seems particularly ironic that our young people can be so vocal about environmental issues, and yet they still flock to buy the balloons and take part in these releases.
It just breaks my heart to see this, knowing that the odds are some animals will suffer or die from our thoughtlessness, and yet again the land will be littered.

Any time someone posts about this they get accused of bad timing and insensitivity. Caring about our environment and feeling deep sadness for tragic losses aren't mutually exclusive. We have to find some time to speak up, because however much we do, it still happens.

There are so many alternatives to balloon releases. Confetti, seed bombs, bubbles, flying kites - all sorts of things.

But balloons are very cheap and very easy and nice to take pictures of. Agree that many people just don't care about the litter - you only have to walk along any main road and look at the huge number of discarded coffee cups and sweet wrappers.

Everything left as tribute is litter. When the Queen died they needed an army of volunteers to deal with all the plastic wrappers on flowers, and the millions of Paddingtons.

It's now VERY common practice at funerals to say family flowers only and donations to charity. We did this recently when my Dad died and raised a huge chunk of money for a cause which was important to him. This is the shift which needs to happen with "tributes".

SunnySaturdayMorning is clearly one of these 'I say it like it is and I don't care if people like me'. Probably thinks she's the 'salt of the earth'. In reality, she's just a thoroughly irritating know all who isn't going to explain herself because Why Should I.

You can beg all you like. I’m still going to do it.

Yep, because releasing balloons is really going to help.

This is why it needs to be banned OP, people will happily switch to lighting candles but some like this PP need it spelt out.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 27/05/2023 10:34

Next time a hamster dies I’m gonna run a supertanker aground in tribute because I can grieve however I want.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 27/05/2023 10:35

About 100 metres from where I live there is a balloon caught in a tree, too high up for anyone to remove. It has been there for over 25 years with no signs of deteriorating. OK, it hasn't killed a horse or cow but it is unsightly and unnecessary.

Farmer friends of ours had to do a lengthy inspection of their fields a couple of years ago after a local balloon release. They found two in their sheep fields😡

Just ban the bloody things. Is there a petition?

Why are you so determined to police people’s emotions and expressions of grief

Are you normally so dense?

If you want to make a real impact against environmental waste then spend time working with businesses forcing them change their destructive practices.

Calling out private citizens who release balloons is like throwing a deck chair off the titanic and wondering why it still sank.

People need to show corporations what we want is a cleaner environment and a more sustainable economy. They chase our £ so we show them our £ will not support poor environmental policies and behaviours. If individuals don’t force it, it’s not going to happen.

We realised butterfly's at nursery and it felt quite symbolic.

Maybe that could be a replacement

I do t think people realise do they it seems so odd to me, if you’re upset over a loved one passing away how is letting go of some environmentally damaging item going to help at all? Is it symbolic if going to heaven ? But then you could say ‘oh this person died and it’s symbolic for me to wash away the awful feeling of my grief so I’ll pour some coloured bleach into this stream to symbolise my grief washing away, to take a message somehow to them and it’s coloured so I can pop a picture of this on fb and never mind if it kills some fish as my grief my rules’

Whatt · 27/05/2023 10:42

*released

GulesMeansRed · 27/05/2023 10:43

I really hate the attitude that there's no point in doing anything on an individual level because X company or Y country is doing whatever.

Large companies do not release balloons and leave litter by roadsides. That is purely down to indivuduals.

Butterfly releases are a terrible idea too.

I wrote to my MP yesterday, after seeing the pictures.

May I ask others to write as well?

midsomermurderess · 27/05/2023 10:45

Beg of whom? You are just addressing an echo chamber here, so what’s the point. It’s just a longer version of those dreary Facebook posts ‘to the lady on the train,…’.. As if she is going to read it and have a eureka moment.

PhoenixIsFlying · 27/05/2023 10:46

Thank you for your post. It will highlight to some people who never though of it that way. Candles definitely a good alternative.

Soubriquet · 27/05/2023 10:48

I used to do these sort of things but then people started to educate me on why they were wrong.

I haven’t done one in 11 years now and I don’t plan on doing ever again. I also deter my kids away.

I use seed bombs, bubbles, leaves, flowers, even things like green confetti (made from plants and flowers).

megletthesecond · 27/05/2023 10:49

Yanbu. They should be illegal and everyone needs to be fined. I'm sick of litter picking skanky "in memory" balloons littered by idiots.
Pity our local council doesn't have the guts to ban them. I suspect one day I'll lose my shit with someone doing it and have to sprint before I get lynched.

Soubriquet · 27/05/2023 10:49

Oooo a butterfly release is also a good alternative

HoldingTheDoor · 27/05/2023 10:51

Well…never knew that!

What about those caterpillar kits you can buy where you raise the bugs and release the butterflies?

HoldingTheDoor · 27/05/2023 10:53

Bad idea too. Same effects.

I agree. I do t understand why people think that way, surely it’s more of a reason for individuals to do more to somehow counteract the damage done by others

HoldingTheDoor · 27/05/2023 10:54

"Even if you were to use native species, if they are captively bred, you are potentially affecting the gene pool and you are also releasing diseases and pathogens into the wild population."

From the same article.

Soubriquet · 27/05/2023 10:54

Aw that’s a shame. I really enjoy doing those with my children as I find them educational plus i think I’m helping nature by releasing adult butterflies ready to go and breed.

Guess I’ll stop that

HoldingTheDoor · 27/05/2023 10:56

Thank you for stopping doing so.
