I’ve gone from having a giant’s appetite to a fairy’s appetite!

Hello!

Historically, I’ve had a very large appetite. When I was a child, we would have McDonalds literally 4 times per week and we would also eat sugary cereal, unlimited crisps and chocolate plus other takeaways (and we were encouraged to have a large pizza all to ourselves). I had no issue with this even though I was a child-it was delicious and fun to eat all that. This eating carried on until my early 30s as it was normal to me. I am overweight but not as badly as you’d think (weight 13.5 stone at 5’6”) and my weight does not fluctuate.

I got married yesterday and me and DH are having a mini moon. I have been eating less naturally as I’ve got older (now mid 30s). Partly because DH had a stomach condition where he can’t eat massive portions and partly because I wanted to trim some fat for the wedding (I did it and am 13 stone now and did look nice in my dress though I say so myself). I typically have weetabix or fruit for breakfast, salad or fish and veg for lunch and something like baked potato or sushi for dinner.

Because I’ve historically adored food and lots of it, I booked what I thought were normal but indulgent meals on this mini moon. Like a 3 course dinner yesterday and afternoon tea today. I’ve found it really really hard to eat though. I could only eat half my afternoon tea (even though I’m not having lunch or dinner today and I deliberately had a small breakfast and a walk to make space for afternoon tea). At our wedding dinner last night, I could only eat two courses and half a bottle of wine and I was uncomfortably full to the point it wasn’t nice. This was when I’d just had a cereal bar for lunch to make space!

It’s odd to me! Also, my mother (who I suspect had eating and drinking disorders among other things) would praise me for being ‘fun’ because she could always count on me to eat lots of food and be her drinking buddy. It was about the only thing she liked about me. I feel like I’m no fun now that I’ve got this mouse appetite. I think I’m being unreasonable because I can still be ‘fun’ without eating and drinking a lot.

I do see other people in the hotel tucking in to several helpings of breakfast and then large meals for lunch and dinner plus lots of alcohol throughout the day. The servers have seemed surprised when I’ve asked for the bill! I don’t know what to think.

YABU: Your appetite is too small now and maybe something is wrong.

YANBU: Your appetite is fine, it’s normal to get full after one course of food.

You got married yesterday and you noticed what other people were eating and posted on MN about it?

That is really weird! Why do you even care when on honeymoon?

My thoughts exactly 😄 congrats on your marriage OP.

I would also be uncomfortable with 2 courses and half a bottle of wine...Christmas day I had a tiny starter, a smaller main than anyone else and half the size of pudding and I had to go to sleep sitting up 😞...I always struggled with my weight though...I have always been actually baffled at the amount of food most people eat, for example takeaway portions here in the UK are enormous, and I don't get how people can eat several containers of food without being physically uncomfortable 😣. We might order a take always once or twice a year and one container of rice , one of curry and a naan bread is more than enough for my husband and myself ..this is supposed to be one portion 😅

I have the same OP, I have always been able to eat large portions but now I am approaching 40, I just can't - I stay full for longer and cannot physically eat large portions anymore without feeling uncomfortably full. It annoys me no end, I love eating 😂

I am the same, at around the same age than you. I also noticed I can't drink more than 2 or 3 alcoholic drinks without well....expelling them 😅

I echo what PP said; I had a 2.5kg ovarian cyst and my only symptoms were feeling full very quickly and then feeling bloated. Worth keeping an eye on as cysts can be very dangerous even if not cancerous.
Try not to dwell on this on your honeymoon though!

I'm 48 and my appetite has definitely reduced in recent years. I wouldn't say I have the appetite of a fairy but I used to eat like a horse and now I can't. Worth getting checked if the change is very sudden and dramatic though.

AtrociousCircumstance · 27/05/2023 08:43

OP I’m glad you’ll get it checked out when you can and I hope your DH is better soon.

Also you’ve answered responses (both supportive ones and snarky ones about ‘why are you posting’ etc - when they haven’t RTFT) with grace and warmth.

You have eloped and your DH is unwell, and is getting treatment while you are both in Scotland for the weekend?

Must be an emergency if he has been admitted as a patient for treatment.

No wonder you can only eat two courses and drink half a bottle of wine at dinner.

You must feel sick with worry.

tinselvestsparklepants · 27/05/2023 09:14

You have a normal appetite now. And remember people generally overeat on holiday so don't pay attention to other guests.

You don’t sound very sympathetic, were you trying to infer something else?

Hope your DH is ok OP and that you can get checked out soon, also. And also, congratulations!

I am the same. When I was pregnant my appetite plummeted. I eat around one meal a day and a few snacks (when working) but thats it. I just dont get hungry anymore
