Just received a WhatsApp message on one of my many groups about ordering t-shirts for the kids. The football coach has obviously spent time composing the message but it is littered with so many mistakes I just can't look at it. The main one being 'I'm going to put up a pole for everyone to vote'. I've also received a message from a Health visitor coming to visit my baby that was littered with spelling and grammar mistakes. Is the English language dying or am I just being unreasonable and picky?

Your message has at least three spelling, grammar or punctuation errors.

OooohAhhhh · 25/05/2023 11:16

The auto correct function changes words into other things as-well, so I blame that.

MasterBeth · 25/05/2023 11:17

HeidiUpTheMountain · 25/05/2023 10:59

Not one comma in your entire OP. Incomplete sentence - verb missing.

Piss poor grammar right there! This should read “Piss-poor grammar, right there!”. Hyphenation and a comma are required.

4/10.

I know you're joking but there is no need to write in complete sentences.

The irony of the thread title as well.

ISpyNoPlumPie · 25/05/2023 11:19

Ah I have a good friend who is dyslexic and often makes grammatical and spelling errors. She is really self-conscious about it so it's good to know that people do judge her harshly for it. Besides, as has been said, we all make mistakes when we're in a rush. Maybe we can cut ourselves and each other a bit of slack?

CheekyHobson · 25/05/2023 11:21

What I really want to know is exactly how many WhatsApp groups about ordering t-shirts the OP is in.

spurs4ever · 25/05/2023 11:23

Grassroots football coaches are volunteers who give their time to coach your child and probably have jobs and families of their own to consider. Why don't you offer to organise the poll for him? I'm sure it would be perfect. It may just relieve a bit of the mental load for him too.

There’s nothing wrong with my spelling, but there’s (sometimes) a lot wrong with my typing.

Esjolaol1973 · 25/05/2023 11:26

OP you obviously have far too much time on your hands and a worry free life if a text from a football coach ,who gives their free time to young kids for their enjoyment has upset your senses so much .The HV was probably bursting for a piss, hadn’t had a drink for hours and stressed with her work load.
You need to find a hobby or even work on being a less judgmental person !

Loopzy · 25/05/2023 11:26

It used to annoy me, but now I read messages like this, in the voice of the policeman from 'Allo 'Allo and I find it doesn't annoy me the same!

ejbaxa · 25/05/2023 11:28

I think the football coach typing “pole” is a non issue. He got the message across, his skills are presumably related to football and not necessarily to writing. He’s enriching kids’ lives so I don’t think I would judge his SPAG.

Sunshine275 · 25/05/2023 12:26

I do this all the time but I’m Dyslexic, so things often seem to make sense then don’t.

But yes you’re being picky, these people to described are clearly busy hard working people, trying to support YOU and YOUR kids. A spelling mistake isn’t end of the world.

Notadramallama · 25/05/2023 12:32

I used to work for a company that dealt with primary school teachers. So many of the emails we received from them were full of spelling and grammatical errors. It was shocking.

Yes, I know, they were probably typing in their 30 second lunch break etc...

TheBerry · 25/05/2023 12:43

Doesn’t matter. I personally tend to use correct spelling and grammar, but I don’t care if other people do so long as I can understand what they’re trying to say.

Besides, some people are dyslexic etc.

Aethelred · 25/05/2023 12:48

With the football coach - I wonder if the implication of your post is that all people who have difficulties with reading/writing (for example, people who have dyslexia) should be banned from giving up their time to do nice things for people in case they make spelling mistakes in things they write?

With the Health Visitor, most of them are overworked and running round trying to fit in as many people as they can. As long as people can understand the message, I would have thought that not spending time checking their messages (which they must send a lot of) and spending it with people who need them is a choice I would be able to live with.

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 25/05/2023 12:51

Maybe you should be thanking the football coach for giving up his free time rather than worrying about a few spelling mistakes and slagging him off online. Just a thought.

mumtohatty · 25/05/2023 12:51

Ok I get the message, I'm being unreasonable. I'm sure most of you on here have little silly insignificant things that irritate you too though?

Hazelnuttella · 25/05/2023 09:20

Well if someone doesn’t know the difference between pole and poll, reading it back to themselves isn’t going to help!

Your HV was probably texting quickly with one hand while eating her lunch or driving between visits.

Pedants corner is nice this time of year, you should check it out 😁

Err, I think that should be pedants' corner 😄

RoseGoldEagle · 25/05/2023 13:03

I judge people who judge others for this. It’s such a specific thing to focus on. Spelling and grammar come fairly easily to me, but there are so many things that don’t. I have poor spatial awareness, I can’t paint or sing, I’m a terrible dancer, I’m not particularly good at cooking. Some people find writing a challenge, but it doesn’t mean they don’t have other skills. I would judge my child’s football coach if they weren’t very good at football, or were being horrible to the kids; I really don’t mind at all if they can’t spell or their grammar is poor.

IndexBook · 25/05/2023 13:04

Well, yes, I get irritated my silly things. Loose/lose is the main one.

However, as has already been pointed out - your posts aren't perfect on here and in one case shows a lack of reading comprehension.

I know I make mistakes too [and I dare say mistakes I have no idea are mistakes] - so that tends to dampen my irritation! I always think it is a brave move to start a thread like this as they usually end with all the errors in the OPs posts being pointed out 😂and this one is no exception...

Well the football coach is doing that for the love of the sport, unpaid. And the HV probably has far too much work. So stop moaning.

cloudsandream · 25/05/2023 13:31

Really shows off OPs character more as she readily ignores all comments pointing out poor education, dyslexia etc. Confused You have too much time on your hands to be petty over such things.
