To think people should proof read their messages?

Just received a WhatsApp message on one of my many groups about ordering t-shirts for the kids. The football coach has obviously spent time composing the message but it is littered with so many mistakes I just can't look at it. The main one being 'I'm going to put up a pole for everyone to vote'. I've also received a message from a Health visitor coming to visit my baby that was littered with spelling and grammar mistakes. Is the English language dying or am I just being unreasonable and picky?

YANBU.

A firm of solicitors near me had “Litigration” on the sign outside their office. I wouldn’t want to employ solicitors with that kind of attention to detail!

Thats a bit different to an informal message on WhatsApp from a kids football coach.

Bellabon · 25/05/2023 10:18

YABU Some people just aren't very good at spelling, or they may have dyslexia for example. As long as I can understand what has been written then I do not care

Crossandupset · 25/05/2023 10:19

Oh my friend does this, except her messages as so bad they're often unreadable. It's not so much spelling mistakes as autocorrect gone mad. She never proof reads! She's a GP's Practice Manager so more than capable.

Hankunamatata · 25/05/2023 10:21

Some people are illiterate, some cannot be bothered. Tbh I'd be grateful that an adult was giving their free time to coach my child's football club rather than picking at their grammar or spelling

On my way!

Informal messages with errors are fine, but anyone who is in a position of responsibility - eg the football coach - or writing on behalf of their employer should try to eliminate errors as far as possible, including people with disabilities IMO. Otherwise there may be ambiguities or misleading phrasing.

My husband frequently has to send emails to the all members of a club to which we belong and usually gets me to check them first - his spelling and grammar are so-so 🙂.

Moreover employees' errors reflect badly on their employers - if they can't get a simple message correct how slapdash is the whole company about the rest of their business?

OttoGraph · 25/05/2023 10:42

If you understand the message, why does it matter?

Thinkwhat · 25/05/2023 10:43

Football coach is going to the effort of organising kit and all you can do is sneer at their spelling? Don’t look at the message then, and don’t bother replying- it’s not a problem for them if you’re too bloody sensitive to read it.

People have different education and language abilities and it just makes you seem like a dick that you can’t recognise that.

Also, the English language isn’t dying. Language evolves over time, it’s constantly changing. The language that we use now is not the same that we used in Shakespeare’s time. Or even 100 years ago.

I have to agree!

CherryBlossom321 · 25/05/2023 10:46

Although I find it mildly irritating, I couldn’t get worked up about it. As long as I can work it out it really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

TheBucketWoman · 25/05/2023 10:47

Not unreasonable or picky. I hope you pointed out their mistakes?

LazyLeopard · 25/05/2023 10:48

My kids football coach has dyslexia. He often puts millions of mixed up spellings and grammar errors.

I don't give a toss, because he's bloody brilliant, gives a lot of time and effort for free, and has helped them thrive and be confident.

My eldest has dyslexia, his spelling is awful, but he can't help it, no matter how hard he tries.

Oh, and I'm a writer and editor and I make numerous typos like that - i.e. the wrong 'their' etc, and so do my clients. Luckily that's good as it means I have a job and the person who edits my books and articles has one too 😉

Reusable · 25/05/2023 10:49

I can’t say it bothers me. If I get the gist of what they’re saying, then all is good in the world.

Not one comma in your entire OP.

Piss poor grammar right there!

Beeinalily · 25/05/2023 10:56

You're making assumptions OP, the coach is putting up a Maypole and you need to vote for the music to dance around it to. Probably.

Not one comma in your entire OP. Incomplete sentence - verb missing.

Piss poor grammar right there! This should read “Piss-poor grammar, right there!”. Hyphenation and a comma are required.

4/10.

IglesiasPiggl · 25/05/2023 11:01

I agree with PPs that some of it is a less good education and being in a rush, but also phones are getting really cocky thinking they know best. Mine totally changes what I want to write without even highlighting this, the arrogant bastard. The other day I wanted to type "the back of my home" and my phone decided I really wanted to say "the neck of my body".

But I didn’t start the thread

and I don’t get annoyed as the Op does!

But ridiculous is the correct spelling???

This answer makes me wonder if the problem is your reading comprehension.

That's exactly what she is saying.

I sometimes forget that tone doesn’t come across on the web.

I was having a bit of a jape.

CheekyHobson · 25/05/2023 11:07

I correct grammar and spelling as part of my job, but I could not care less about it when I’m not being paid to do so.

People who pick apart mistakes in anything other than formal writing are proving nothing other than how insufferable they are.

BiffChipsandKippers · 25/05/2023 11:07

I don't seam very nise OP 🤷🏼‍♀️

redfacebigdisgrace · 25/05/2023 11:08

Get a grip! As the mother of three dyslexic children you should be ashamed of yourself.

The “pole” example is not to do with proof reading. It’s exactly the kind of error a poor speller/dyslexic would make. But hey, well done on being good at spelling 👏 Hopefully my children will meet nicer, less judgmental people as they go through life.
