Air Up bottles - Am I out of touch?

Please tell me if this is me.. apparently these are the new ‘in thing’ DS has asked for one of these… had a quick search and from what I’ve seen they range from £35-55! Is this absolutely ludicrous for a kids water bottle!? I’m thinking along the lines of lost, broken etc.

Daughters had one since last summer and it actually makes her drink so money well spent imo!

Justtrying · 24/05/2023 21:56

Dd 12 has had one for over a year, likes the pods as she doesn't drink anything but water. So it gives a change. But big caveat on the older models, unless you keep them upright they leak. Expensive and the pods are too. But they still seem to have appeal.

RememberToSmile1980 · 24/05/2023 21:57

We got one last year for about £15.00 or £20.00 on offer.

JJJSchmidt · 24/05/2023 21:57

I think they're ridiculously expensive and have been clear with dd that it's a no from me. I understand you need flavour pods in addition to the bottle too. They'd potentially.make kids targets for theft which is a huge drawback for me.

Lemonyyy · 24/05/2023 21:58

YANBU they seem like the most overpriced shite to me, daughter is desperate for one so I’ve told her she’ll have to save up and buy it herself.

SugarNspices · 24/05/2023 21:58

My son keeps asking for one. I'm worried it will get broke or lost in the first week though tbh!

NightIsYoungSoAreWe · 24/05/2023 22:00

I volunteer in my sons year 4 class and 90% of the class have one.
I've just been roped into upgrading my son to the steel bottle 🙄 definitely over priced crap but he's had his original one a year now and uses it every day and drinks more water so I don't mind.

Oysterbabe · 24/05/2023 22:02

They are quite cool tbf.

Notimeforaname · 24/05/2023 22:06

The majority of 10-13 year olds I work with have them.
They're always drinking from them and refilling. If you can afford one, they're great.

If he loses it, then that's on him, he can pay for another himself or live without it.

BinauralBeats · 24/05/2023 22:08

My 7 year old was desperate for one and said 'everyone' in class had one. I didn't believe that so I investigated at home time and right enough, they were everywhere! I said he could get one if he paid for it himself and he was more than happy to. He uses it every day and so far not broken or lost, touch wood...

illiterato · 24/05/2023 22:09

They were a huge fad at my dc’s school over Christmas. Mine got them for Christmas. Both broken ( dropped into concrete). The fad has passed as I imagine the parents are now refusing to buy the pods and everyone is back to normal water bottles.

Bluegold · 24/05/2023 22:10

Thank you all for replying. I am getting the impression that kids do tend to drink more from these than regular bottles which is always a good thing. I feel like a dinosaur only learning about them today!

Absolutely @Notimeforaname ill make it clear on his head be it! He’s so clumsy and forgetful!

Pester power will always oust the cost of living, amazing

Useruser222 · 24/05/2023 22:12

I got my daughter one for Christmas after she went on and on asking for one. I haven't seen her with it for so long I actually forgot all about it until this thread 🙄.

Bluegold · 24/05/2023 22:12

@illiterato oh no!! This is my worry! We’re mega late to the party if you were Xmas time!

OP posts:
VioletMountainHare · 24/05/2023 22:13

More than half my class had them just after Christmas. We’re down to around 6 now they’ve lost their novelty/started leaking/smashed.

Dressshelp · 24/05/2023 22:15

Ds had one and it got horribly manky and mouldy which put him off using it again even after it has been cleaned. They are cool though (may have been partial to the cola ones myself!)

Doje · 24/05/2023 22:18

DS(9) got one around February. Paid for it himself as DH and I said he'll no.

He didn't like any of the pods and then as PP said it leaked. We asked for money back as it was not 'fit for purpose' (a bottle that leaks ffs?!?!) and eventually, but unwillingly, they gave us the money back. Not impressed with the product or customer service.

angelicaelizapeggy · 24/05/2023 22:20

DS (11) got one for Christmas, seems like 90% of his class have them.

He still uses his and it does seem to get him drinking more which is great.

I tried a bit but it didn’t ‘trick my brain’ like it’s supposed to, I could just taste plain water.

chimchimina · 24/05/2023 22:22

Has anyone got a link for where to get a reasonably priced original one please? After much nagging I forked out for a £25 one from China, but according to DS it's a "fake" and TBF, it is a bit shit, it pours water everywhere.

MakesMeFeelSad · 24/05/2023 22:22

Mine aren't interested luckily because it would be a no from me

MavisStrop · 24/05/2023 22:25

Overpriced and silly imo, but Dd was desperate for one, so she had one for Christmas... and loves it!

Starlightstarbright1 · 24/05/2023 22:26

I have just ordered a Amazon version for my Ds who severely restricts his fluids . I am hoping 🤞

SheDragonheart · 24/05/2023 22:27

They look like a baby’s bottle or toddler sippy cup.
It would be a no from me.

illiterato · 24/05/2023 22:29

You’re also not meant to put them in the dishwasher and you have to dismantle the pod to clean them and it’s just a faff. Mine drink loads of water anyway and the scent didn’t change that.
