Do you really get your five a day?

YABU - yes
YANBU - no

I aim to eat healthily where I can but realistically I probably only have 3 portions of fruit or veg most days. Some days more and some days I only have one.
In a normal day, I’ll have an apple, a bowl of berries/some grapes and then possibly a chickpea curry. Sometimes I add spinach to this and sometimes I don’t. Obviously that’s only 3 a day really as I’m not having that many berries or chickpeas.

Yes usually lots more.
Usually have some fruit with my breakfast, a salad for lunch and usually 3/4 veg with dinner

Tootsey11 · 23/05/2023 21:16

Never

Mushroo · 23/05/2023 21:16

Usually just about, but there’s quite a few days (especially the weekend) when I don’t. For example if have a bacon sandwich for brunch.

Today I’ve had strawberries, blueberries, a clementine, and aubergine and in a tomato sauce so just about scraping in.

I generally eat homemade meals so I try not to worry too much.

MessyBunny · 23/05/2023 21:18

I started to about four years ago and now plan my meals around what vegetables I am going to have.
I think it’s been good for my skin and hair plus my cholesterol.

FrownedUpon · 23/05/2023 21:19

Yes, I usually have at least 10 a day. I’m quite into healthy eating & so I make sure I have a mix of berries at breakfast and a lot of veg & salad for lunch & dinner.

MrsRinaDecker · 23/05/2023 21:20

I do my best but no, not always, especially considering the quantities you need to count as a portion. (For instance, today I had a granola bar, fresh bread with hummus and tomatoes on, a biscuit, and dinner had chicken, a sauce made from passata, and a side of broccoli).

MessyBunny · 23/05/2023 21:20

I forgot to add I did try upping it six or seven portions but felt too bloated.

febrezeme · 23/05/2023 21:21

It's been well documented that the whole "5 a day" thing was a huge - and very successful - ad marketing campaign which doesn't actually have any scientific backing so eat whatever going feel comfortable

BHRK · 23/05/2023 21:21

Yes and I count them

Sissynova · 23/05/2023 21:21

You don't ever have veg other than maybe spinach in a curry?

I actually think that's quite uncommon. Most people usually have around 2 types of veg on their plate at dinner.
Do you never have veg at lunch? Salad in a sandwich? Veg in pasta?

I don't think 5 portions over the day is really that much honestly.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 23/05/2023 21:21

I bought a new lunchbox with compartments so I get 4 portions when at work. Yumbox if you're interested 😄

LadyWithLapdog · 23/05/2023 21:22

Vegan, so yes I do. Then go and spoil it all with crisps and wine 😁

Hairbrushhandle · 23/05/2023 21:23

I get five types of fruit or veg but not 5 portions I don't think. Because whenever I've read up on it the portions are pretty big.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 23/05/2023 21:24

Is your name Mandy OP? Grin

GeneHuntsCowboyBoots · 23/05/2023 21:24

Sadly, no. I’d love to as I love veg but it cripples me, IBS wise!

midgemadgemodge · 23/05/2023 21:24

Yes 5 a day was just a thing

The actual good number to aim for is 8 to 10 but they didn't think people would accept that

Most days 5 to 7
Chick pea curry with onion and tomato base as well as the spinach ?

bluechameleon · 23/05/2023 21:25

Yes, always. Today I had an apple in my porridge, some melon and blueberries for snack, a salad with lettuce, cucumber, celery and radish for lunch, satsuma for a snack, then broccoli, carrots and green beans with my spaghetti carbonara. I'd say probably 7 servings in total.
Surely a serving of curry contains a full portion of chickpeas? Unless you mean a chicken/lamb curry with some chickpeas added. If you have some fruit with breakfast, fruit as a snack, then salad or veg with lunch and dinner, it should be pretty easy. I aim for half my plate consisting of vegetables at dinner, and I also don't eat meat, both of which help.

catscalledbeanz · 23/05/2023 21:25

I do. And often more. I aim for 10 and usually get 7. I didn't always but when I had children I tried to for them, and then the whole 30 a week for gut health came into fashion which further spurred my enthusiasm for the family eating plenty of veg and fruit.

MessyBunny · 23/05/2023 21:28

I aim for this too, basically I try to have as colourful diet as possible.

MooseBreath · 23/05/2023 21:28

Most days, yes. I put in a lot of effort meal planning to do it, and I wouldn't if I didn't meal plan.

Today I had watermelon, orange, peas, carrots, onion, and celery.
Tomorrow will be banana, orange, carrots, celery, spinach, tomato, and onion.

Iheartsummertime · 23/05/2023 21:28

Today I had diced apple and mango on granola for breakfast (frozen, from Aldi, so handy)
Half a tomato and salad on a sandwich at lunch
Peas and carrots at dinner
Frozen cherries as a snack (Aldi again)
So I do, but I like most F&V. The kids, on the other hand...

The recommended amount is actually more like 10 a day, so 5 is pretty low.

BeyondMyWits · 23/05/2023 21:28

Like most people I know... sometimes.

Breakfast is usually porridge and fruit.
Lunch a sandwich with tomato and coleslaw or a veg soup (like carrot + red pepper), maybe an apple orbanana later.
Tea meat, carb, 2x veg- from broccoli, cabbage, carrots and green beans usually.

So round about ... 4 to7 generally

Ohfgsjon · 23/05/2023 21:29

I don't even get my 5 a month.

OldTinHat · 23/05/2023 21:30

Maybe once a year.
