Signs

2 episodes of shaking uncontrollably
head twitches
sometimes lethargic showing little interest
off food and drink
runny eyes
iv not seen any diorhea or bowel movements but plenty of wees
random yelping sounds when he moves

this morning he went floppy so i toon to vets after his second instance of shaking when it wasn’t cold
doctor took tests blood glucose was fine but had low potassium and some other minerals
he said perhaps gastro (even though he def hasn’t had diarrhoea and I don’t think he has been sick nor in front of me anyway)
well he was kept in on iv but wouldn’t eat
his bloods got better so iv brought him home
he’s still a bit twitchy
he’s eaten some chicken with me but his head is twitching a bit and he’s refusing water. He has made a random yelping sound too when moving

the vet is waiting a second opinion on his kidneys but hasn’t offered anyt other diagnosis other than gastro which I don’t believe to be true

any ideas what this could be? I have also realised I’m a month late with his updated vaccinations abs now terrified it’s distemper although it doesn’t match all the symptoms

You'd have to be monumentally unlucky and probably live somewhere distemper is hugely common, for him to have distemper having missed a booster vacc. by a month!

Unless you're about to tell me you live in rural India/Sri Lanka/China etc where vaccination levels are low and stray dog populations high... I would not worry about that.

But I would video episodes and speak to the vet again tomorrow - if he gets worse tonight, ie becomes lethargic, poor colour, etc then speak to the out of hours/emergency vet that covers your practice.

Fingers x for him!

Has he been off lead anywhere he could have eaten anything toxic to dogs?

handhold

Saddogmum · 22/05/2023 22:35

Thanks I really hope not

He’s breathing hard and quick now does anyone have any experience of this at all?

OP posts:
justasking111 · 22/05/2023 23:11

Breathing hard and quick is concerning. How old is he?

justasking111 · 22/05/2023 23:15

Can you count how many breaths he is taking in sixty seconds?

IfIKnowMe · 22/05/2023 23:20

Did the vet want to keep him in? I’d be calling the vet now and asking for advice.

Vetoncall · 22/05/2023 23:20

I would advise calling your vet's out of hours service for advice. It's extremely unlikely to be distemper but his symptoms sound concerning, I wouldn't leave it until tomorrow.

I will do this
any ideas what it should be
he sometimes wakes up or stops for a bit

He wouldn’t eat at the vets and he wouldn’t settle in the kennels he hates enclosed places so this really stressed him out. As his potassium etc got better they decided he could come
home

he has now started to pant in his sleep like his thirsty but refusing water

Did he have a high temperature at the vet's? My dog had similar symptoms with something called steroid-responsive meningitis (SRMA). It's rare but luckily our vet recognised it and started her on steroids and she was fine and lived another 12 years.

007DoubleOSeven · 22/05/2023 23:36

Take him to emergency vets

DogAndCatMama · 22/05/2023 23:37

You should call the emergency vet now for advice. Don’t wait.

sandgrown · 22/05/2023 23:39

When mine was refusing water I got a calpol syringe and squirted it into his mouth. Has he been outside much . Could it be sunstroke?

Saddogmum · 22/05/2023 23:45

He hasn’t been in the sun
he’s still panting I have managed to get him to drink some and used a few calpol syringes but he’s still panting

OP posts:
Thisweeksname · 22/05/2023 23:45

Please call an emergency vet for him, he might need urgent treatment

Klausnextmum · 22/05/2023 23:46

My dog started yelping and shaking suddenly. I took him to emergency vets. It was a compressed disc in his neck. The shaking and panting was him dealing with the pain. He’s had a very expensive operation now and touch wood is recovering well.
the symptoms aren’t completely the same but panting and shaking can definitely be a sign of pain.
I would go back to the vets. Hope it’s nothing serious.

DogAndCatMama · 22/05/2023 23:48

You really need to call the vet. A few syringes of water aren’t really going to fix the symptoms you’re describing.

justasking111 · 22/05/2023 23:52

I think you should call the vet. He's struggling so much.

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 22/05/2023 23:52

Please call the emergency vets, can you get him there if you need to?

ThinWomansBrain · 22/05/2023 23:58

Poor baby, I hope he feels better soon.

Saddogmum · 22/05/2023 23:59

Iv called the vet she said his bloods when he left was fine, his x ray was ok he’s diagnosis is anorexia??
she thinks he’s panting because he’s bloated and eaten after. Long time not eating and suddenly drink loads

OP posts:
Saddogmum · 22/05/2023 23:59

I’m looking for a second opinion this doesn’t make sense to me

OP posts:
FrostyFifi · 23/05/2023 00:01

Anorexia just means he's not eating, clinically.
