Signs

2 episodes of shaking uncontrollably
head twitches
sometimes lethargic showing little interest
off food and drink
runny eyes
iv not seen any diorhea or bowel movements but plenty of wees
random yelping sounds when he moves

this morning he went floppy so i toon to vets after his second instance of shaking when it wasn’t cold
doctor took tests blood glucose was fine but had low potassium and some other minerals
he said perhaps gastro (even though he def hasn’t had diarrhoea and I don’t think he has been sick nor in front of me anyway)
well he was kept in on iv but wouldn’t eat
his bloods got better so iv brought him home
he’s still a bit twitchy
he’s eaten some chicken with me but his head is twitching a bit and he’s refusing water. He has made a random yelping sound too when moving

the vet is waiting a second opinion on his kidneys but hasn’t offered anyt other diagnosis other than gastro which I don’t believe to be true

any ideas what this could be? I have also realised I’m a month late with his updated vaccinations abs now terrified it’s distemper although it doesn’t match all the symptoms

OP you sound so lovely and obviously love your dog so much. Would a Go Fund Me be a possibility?

Klausnextmum · 24/05/2023 05:59

I really hope that cage rest works. My dog had gabopentin which quite wiped him out. My boy is a spaniel and it’s been very difficult to keep him calm as he is a real giddy knickers. He’s also heavy - 17 kgs so lifting him in and out of the house has been hard on my back. Your boy looks much smaller so I’m sure you’ll manage really well.
good luck - I have everything crossed for you. Our dogs are a real part of the family. My boy got me through the covid lockdowns and forces me to get out walking everyday.
i have everything crossed for you.

We have gabopentin now.has your boy recovered ok?
i am going to call and ask about steroids today
same, getting out boy was one of the happiest days of our lives. He is the best dog anyone could ask for in fact I often wondered how we got so lucky with him and how he was such a perfect match.

My dog has IVDD. He is on Rymadyl, Gabapentin, Pardale and has laser therapy at physio. He has good and bad days.

His back end control is starting to go now so we will make a plan soon as I refuse to let him suffer any indignity or pain.

It's tough but it's the last act of love I can show him.

Blondewithredlips · 24/05/2023 11:14

How are you and your dog today?

Hello everyone,

We've had a number of reports from people concerned about this thread so, as we usually do in these circumstances, we're putting our heads round the door with some important reminders.

Right now we can't see any evidence to indicate that the OP isn't above board – if we did, we'd remove the thread straight away. But the truth is that, sadly, we at MNHQ can't know with 100% certainty that any poster is genuine, no matter who they are or how long they have been here. As frustrating as it is, we're not able to vouch for anyone here.

So we always ask users to remember that not everyone on the internet is who they say they are – and remind folk not to give more to another poster, either financially (in cash or gifts) or emotionally (in time or care and support) than they'd be prepared to lose if things went wrong. Though, we strongly advise against parting with any cash or giving away your personal details, and if you receive a PM which makes you uneasy - report it to us and we’ll take a look.

Sorry to hijack your thread briefly there, OP – we really hope that you and your wee doggie are doing okay under the circumstances. Sending our kindest thoughts.

I'm on Gabapentin for back spasms. Omg the relief but I took three weeks to take hold. Before I was laid out helpless the pain off the scale. I'd have three more labours over that.

Not sure why this thread has been reported ? What do people think I’m doing.

How is your dog?

spudulike1 · 24/05/2023 19:45

I second a vet school. My dog has an accident and had a badly damaged leg. We took her to Langfords near Bristol. Even with insurance it cost over 10k but I dread to think how high it would have been without it being a teaching hospital. They did a great job and saved her leg and she just turned 14 yesterday

Hey well the pain is better managed but he is dragging his back legs and one of jus front now looks to be dragging. Iv carried him everywhere but earlier I had him on the sif with me he was asleep but my mum popped over and he got up excited and fell. I can’t stop worrying. He’s started to want to walk around but can’t.
Anyone know if this is normal? I’d like to understand what recovery may look like

Pretty sure Bristol is where the dog I'm talking about went.

It certainly rings a bell.

whats the plan in place?

any hydro or pain relief?

My previous dog had spinal issues, then did a cruciate and we let her go peacefully. Quality of life for her was not there, i did not want her dragging herself round.

I am currently in another situation with one of my dogs now, same thing but their time is coming soon too. Its so sad.

Saddogmum · 24/05/2023 22:20

This is his pain olan
sorey to hear about your dogs. Poor things it’s horrible how it gets them so quickly.
anykne know what recovery looks like timeline wise ?

Hi OP. I've read your updates on this thread and it's clear your poor dog is in pain and deteriorating.

If you can't afford the treatment then you need to PTS. You can't allow a dog to suffer like this in case you can scrape money together or find another option all whilst the dog is getting worse.

It's the kindest thing.

Totally agree. Sounds like you’ll never get that much money together and your dog is suffering. It won’t just recover without treatment. The kindest thing is to PTS.

Saddogmum · 24/05/2023 23:04

He is on pain management and is due to see the vet on Friday where we will make further decisions. I need to at least give pain management a chance.
i have written to some charities just in case

Our dog was young had a spinal issue so was lots of bed rest. He recovered. We've no idea of the age of this dog which may make a difference treatment wise even to a charity

@justasking111 please can you tell me how soon he perked up and recovered? I’m trying to work out if my boy is getting better or not

It was three years ago so I can only say it was four weeks before he went for a short gentle walk on a lead. Is he still crying, whimpering?

justasking111 · 24/05/2023 23:35

You only posted two days ago. Be patient. My nerve blockers took three weeks to fully kick in.

The vet will know more on Friday.

Doggyhelp · 24/05/2023 23:37

He should be on strict crate rest with suspected IVDD. No way should he be walking or dragging himself anywhere. Needs to be carried out to the toilet then brought back to the crate.

It is thought that the crate rest for a number of weeks, allows the body re absorb the disc matter.

Join the dachshund IVDD facebook page as they are all incredibly helpful on there, and can talk you through conservative care and the studies which suggest crate rest can give good results.

Doggyhelp · 24/05/2023 23:40

To add, if his condition is severe I echo the above posters and suggest not leaving a dog in excruciating pain if you don’t have a plan to help him.

Not crying but 2 whimpers this evening
but I think this was because he suddenly jumped off and nearly went careering off the sofa where he was sat with my dd - we had to quickly grab him
I now have got a pen for him. I have been carrying him everywhere and where he’s been so lethargic he hasn’t been jumping up or anything but this afternoon he has tried

I know but he’s been diagnosed with this a day and lots of people saying it’s cruel
to keep him alive in pain but I’m trying to understand what prognosis is. I don’t want him to be in pain but also like you say I need to give this time
I just feel like I’m not doing enough for him
