If you could move anywhere in England…?

Where would you choose and why?

I’m coming out of a long term relationship and am after a fresh start in a new area, currently in the Home Counties.

I love the countryside and would want to be close to green space. Would also like to be closer to the sea if possible.

I’m looking to be in a town or nearby, with good schools and affordable housing. My budget is £350k for a three bed, but could push this slightly for the right house.

This isn’t really an AIBU but I was hoping you guys could suggest some areas I may not have thought of. It’s so daunting when you can literally choose anywhere…!!

Another vote for Shrewsbury! No sea but you have the river and Quarry Park. Lots of independent shops, restaurants and a train station.

Peak District is absolutely lovely! Countryside, lovely restaurants/bars & cafes. Always something great on. No sea but really pretty, safe & low crime with a great community feel. Direct train to Manchester.

Definitely a great option! Also access to Sheffield, Derby, Nottm and lots of Unis to choose from if your DC decided to do it from home.

BeeandG · 23/05/2023 21:57

Ashbourne near Derby is on the edge of the Peak District, market town. Nottingham wise West Bridgford is very popular / expensive. Bakewell is more in to the Peak District but a nice town.

Somewhere near Huntingdon Cambridgeshire.

Amazing walks, good pubs, affordable and into London within the hour.

We've looked to move within an hour all around and can't find anywhere that ticks as many boxes so will stay put

North Yorkshire or the lakes! 😍

I would love in York as I used to live thier and loved it.

I now live in the north west in a cute little town right next to the sea, with a green, a windmill, less than an hour from the lakes, good schools, nice restaurants, low crime and and also cities like Manchester where your £350k would get you a decent 4 bed

I'm sure you cannot get a decent 4 bed in Manchester for that money, unless you live in a not very nice at all area. in the areas with good schools a decent 4 bed is going to start at c £700k. Over the boarder in Derbyshire maybe towards the Peaks but no idea if the schools are any good. york is also surely very hard to find 3 bed in OP's budget. If I'm wrong then please tell me as I'd love to know where in Manc you can be near good schools, in a nice neighbourhood and get a 4-bed for anything like £350k!

OP I’m delighted you said Shrewsbury. I was reading the whole thread screaming SHROPSHIRE in my head Grin.

Shrewsbury is the best place in the entire world and I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise.

agree, love visiting shrewsbury. brilliant park and water play area, loads of creatives and gorgeous buildings. plus affordable and friendly. no idea about schools but friend sent her tribe to school there and seemed like there were plenty of decent options to choose between.

@catgirl1976 Lytham St Annes? We're kinda of close, spent my childhood visiting, I live 45 mins away in the Ribble Valley 😊

Desiredeffect · 24/05/2023 05:51

I moved from Essex to Somerset and live near the exmoor national park around the Minehead area. Very pretty here

catgirl1976 · 24/05/2023 06:27

@Playingchesswithpigeons thats the one! <waves> 😊

The Ribble valley is beautiful ❤️

catgirl1976 · 24/05/2023 06:29

@landbeforegrime no you are right you cant

i looked on rightmove ..was shocked by house prices and quickly retracted in another post. £350 doesn’t get much at all. Which is madness

hattie43 · 24/05/2023 06:32

Hastings . Sea , countryside , lots to do for families and you'd get a proper house for your budget not a shoebox . Can't believe some of these locations suggested down south , yes lovely areas but not on your budget .

The Ribble valley is beautiful ❤️

My son & daughter played golf there last Sunday & our eldest takes his new puppy to a highly recommended poly tunnel field for training there.

< waves back > how exciting ! 😁

Whitby? Kendal?

ItsHardknocklife · 24/05/2023 07:01

I live in Exeter have done for the past 20 years I can't stand it here! I'd love London or Cardiff or failing that back to where I grew up in derby. I don't like country side I'm very much a city girl.

catgirl1976 · 24/05/2023 07:02

@Playingchesswithpigeons

Is it Centrebarks?

Very exciting to have a MN neighbour ❤️

whitewoodenheart · 24/05/2023 07:05

I know you said England but if I could live anywhere in the UK, I'd choose Northern Ireland. I nearly married someone from NI (thankfully got a lucky escape) but absolutely loved it. Loads of stunning unspoiled coastline, very friendly communities and just what felt like a nicer, slower pace of life.

RosiePH · 24/05/2023 07:14

North Cotswolds towns (Warwickshire/Gloucestershire border end) - you can definitely get a 3 bed semi for £350k.

Lovely countryside and welcoming communities

CharChar91 · 24/05/2023 07:19

We live in Suffolk, in a small village outside of Bury St. Edmunds. My little ones go to an amazing school, it's a very low crime area. Bury St. Edmunds is a lovely town with a good range of shops, amenities and history. You can easily travel to bigger towns. Cambridge and London are not too far away but we are still quite rural. Lots of places of interest nearby, Lavenham, Long Melford etc. We like it here! I think you could find a decent 3-bed for £350k.

Sorry just caught up and seen you grew up in E.A. and don't wish to move back!

Nikkidannih · 24/05/2023 07:24

These days in the South 350k doesn’t go that far sadly 😢. South Wales is better value for money while still being close to Southern England. We used to live in Barry which is very up and coming. Amazing parks and beaches on the doorstep and good train links into Cardiff. Other parts of the Vale like Penarth are lovely too but slightly more pricey x

ProtestantsHateAbba · 24/05/2023 07:24

Wirral is lovely, specifically West Kirby, Heswall, Hoylake. Surrounded by Liverpool, north Wales and Chester, countryside, beaches, lots to do. Can definitely get a 3 bed house around there too that’s in your budget.

Southsea, nice sea front, lots going on, a short walk to Portsmouth. Also near the South Downs and Winchester. I don't know the area well though! Just loved it on a short visit and noticed that there's houses around about your price range.

£350k is unlikely to get you much more than a 2 bedroom flat near the seafront Southsea itself, but you could get a three bedroom terrace in Portsmouth, Eastney or the surrounding areas and you’d be in walking distance of the beach. I think Southsea is one of England’s best kept secrets.
