To let dd 13 remove body hair

FlyFriend · 22/05/2023 10:14

DD is adamant she wants to shave her legs. I have mine waxed every 6-8 weeks and remember having so many bloody cuts when I started shaving my legs at 15. I think I'd prefer it if she waxed her legs but not sure she can bare the initial discomfort. On the other hand, shaving means itchy legs, which will drive her mad after a day or 2.

So, which method is safest and most efficient at this age, waxing, wet shaving or a battery driven wet/dry lady shaver? Help!

I've tried pretty much everything expect laser over the years.

I'm back to using a Gillette venus razor. I like the queen of shave shaving gel in a tube as it doesn't dry out in the nozzle like the stuff in a can.

I've got one razor in my gym bag and another in my bathroom at home. Epilator sits unused in my drawer! Waxing got ditched as was really expensive and hard to get appointments.

How is it not the same? It’s your child’s final choice on what they put in their body but if you don’t buy a 13 year old a diet of just pizza they are unlikely to get it. The op isn’t suggesting she will force her daughter to wax but if the op doesn’t book and pay for a waxing treatment or razors her daughter doesn’t have it as an option.

if op decides her thirteen year old isn’t safe with razors that doesn’t make her a monster!

she is THIRTEEN. Op shouldn’t and isn’t ignoring her daughter but thirteen year olds don’t always get to make unilateral decisions without discussion!

It’s not the same because teaching your child to have a healthy diet while enjoying treats in moderation is part of parenting. Agreeing that a teenager can remove their hair but then using the fact that you’re paying to bully them into waxing rather than shaving is not the same as that.

I started shaving my legs in the bath (without telling my mum) when I was maybe 9 or 10 because I hated them being hairy. I've never had any problems with itching and although I got a lot of cuts it was just from pressing on too hard, I learnt as we all do.

CremeEggThief · 22/05/2023 14:54

YABU to think you have the right to '"let her". She's 13! It's entirely her choice!

mathanxiety · 22/05/2023 15:44

Shaving doesn't necessarily entail cuts all over her legs.

Teach her to do it right and she'll be fine.

At 13 it's not really your decision here.

mathanxiety · 22/05/2023 15:47

The DDs and I have always used men's disposable razers with multiple blades.

Currently we have a packet of razors with five blades. They work well.

Beachhutnut · 22/05/2023 17:23

I got my 11 year old an electric razor which she chooses to use sometimes. If she wants anything else I will support her but for now she is happy with that.

peachicecream · 22/05/2023 17:25

Electric shavers are better for that age, they are easier to use and less likely to cut.

andifeelfine · 22/05/2023 17:32

How to remove hair is like how to deal with a period. There are lots of different options available, different people prefer different things, and they only work it out by experimenting.

Personally, I quite like a cheapy disposable men's razor.

I've never badly cut myself, not even as a kid. Not sure why you assume your DD would end up badly cut. If she wants to use a razor, buy her razor and some shaving foam, and warn her to be careful.

GreatBigBoots · 22/05/2023 17:51

When my DD first wanted to shave her legs I got her the Gilette venus comfortglide razers. They are much less likely to cut the skin than standard blades and have built in shaving gel so there's no separate shaving foam etc to juggle. I had memories of trying to shave as a teen with no guidance and ending up with razer burn from not using foam properly and loads of cuts on my legs, so was determined to help her avoid that.

WiddlinDiddlin · 22/05/2023 17:57

I'd recommend non-strip waxing, no stubble, minimal pain (FAR less than strip waxing!) and regrowth once you've been a few times takes absolutely ages and isn't particularly noticeable unless you have very pale skin and very dark hair.

Shaving is a faff, I used to cut myself all the time and the stubble is horrid, even with my fair skin/body hair.

rhaenyra01 · 22/05/2023 17:59

i started shaving my legs when I was a similar age and have always used a razor, however I used to use rubbish cheap ones and my legs were always in bits or very itchy! I’ve got an estrid razor now which is reusable and you can subscribe to get new blades sent every couple of months or so and it’s genuinely the best razor I’ve ever used and a nice smooth shave. They come in loads of different colours and would probably be quite nice for a teenage girl, my stepdaughter has commented on seeing mine in the bathroom as it’s a pastel pink one (she is only 11 though!).

MermaidEyes · 22/05/2023 18:01

Seriously, this is the third thread I've read in two days of daughters removing body hair. Maybe it's just me....

saltandpepper86 · 22/05/2023 18:03

I have tried 3 of the top rayed lady shavers but no electric razor will get you as smooth as a proper razor. The Gillette Venus ones are good I've never nicked myself with one of those. The aldi shaving foam is great (they do a sensitive skin one too) no need to buy the pricey ones x

saltandpepper86 · 22/05/2023 18:04

Another thought with waxing it needs to be a certain length before waxing again, she might want to be constantly smooth so that wouldn't work

allthewoes · 22/05/2023 18:08

Do you mean electric ones or the normal Venus type of razors?

Just the wet razors, not sure what brand they are but mine have thin metal strips across the blades to prevent you cutting yourself.

FarmGirl78 · 22/05/2023 19:17

Has she actually asked for your input on this?

FlyFriend · 22/05/2023 20:53

Has she actually asked for your input on this?
Yes.

Electric shavers are better for that age, they are easier to use and less likely to cut.

We looked at all the options and she wants to give this one a go, so I have ordered it.

If she doesn't get on with it, she'll give the Venus ones a go. This thread has been very useful, thanks everyone. It goes without saying that dd gets to chose her preferred method and it's good to see that most would do the same.

Hello- I own beauty salons and I wax lots of girls. My youngest is 11. The parent must always come along and I always do a little bit first to test tolerance, I have sweets for a bit of sugar is the need it and will stop and anytime if they want me to (same as any client)
to be honest I’ve never had anyone who hasn’t been able to tolerate it and I would always always recommend professional waxing over shaving as it is better long term and gets easier Everytime.

if she wants to, absolutely try waxing first

FerretFumbler · 22/05/2023 21:49

My daughter uses veet and has had no issues.

wondering if I should get her an epilator now after reading all this though…

JessicaBrassica · 22/05/2023 22:13

I'm just impressed you had a discussion. I only knew dd shaved her legs when at 12 she started using our ensuite to shower. it turned out she mostly wanted my razor! I bought her her own and she has gone back to using the main bathroom!

FerretFumbler · 23/05/2023 08:32

@JessicaBrassica don't feel bad! I only
found out when I caught my daughter using scissors, yes scissors, on her dark leg hair!

Weirdly she has the darkest bushiest pubic hair and hair under her arms and isn’t bothered by it in the slightest, but her barely visible
in comparison leg hair upsets her! Go figure!
