To think we should keep my children's bed?

We live in a one bedroom with children, but we're selling. I understand we need to empty it out of clutter to sell, but my husband thinks we should get rid of the wallbed the children sleep in. He says we can empty the home and go away for the summer. My worry is that no one will buy it while we're gone. Then what? We come back and have no beds.

Can someone not store the bed for you whilst it is on the market and you are away for the summer? So if you come back and its not sold you can get the bed back.

Having said that being able to afford to go away for the entire summer is so far out of my realm of experience I'm assuming it means you could always buy a new bed if necessary

GladysHeeler · 21/05/2023 16:47

He thinks you should move out while the house is up for sale? That's a luxury most people can't afford.

I did 'stage' my house for sale but we still lived in it.

Mastmw7g · 21/05/2023 16:47

He doesn't want to store it, as it's very heavy and we would have to hire help. Wallbeds are very expensive, so we can't just buy another. We're going to be staying with family to save money.

That's madness. Just put it up and stage round it for the sale.

GladysHeeler · 21/05/2023 16:49

So your only worry is that the house won't sell at all and then you won't have a bed?

If so, that's unlikely.

Poetnojo · 21/05/2023 16:52

Is it like a murphy bed?
Are you planning on using it in your new place?
Maybe the person buying your place will want it and it could actually be a useful selling feature.

RequiresUpdating · 21/05/2023 16:54

I'd think it would potentially be a selling point if the flat is that small.

Carryonkeepinggoing · 21/05/2023 16:54

If you’re going to empty the flat, pay for a storage unit and move everything. He may have a point that the flat may sell more easily if it’s staged for a couple rather than a family with children. You’ll have to pay for someone to move stuff anyway unless you know lots of strong young men who you can ask for a favor (and that’s not a joke, I have participated in lots of house moves with no hired professionals but you can only do it with a team if people fit enough to move loads of heavy things all day without damaging themselves.). Then if you don’t need the wall bed in your next house you can sell it from the storage unit. Take decent photos of it now while it’s set up properly.

FictionalCharacter · 21/05/2023 16:56

Yanbu. A wall bed isn't clutter and could be a selling point for a one bedroom property.

Mastmw7g · 21/05/2023 16:57

It's a murphy bunk bed. We're working with 687 square feet, so it is a very small home.

i think it could be a good selling point in a small flat

Mastmw7g · 21/05/2023 17:15

This is the bed.

The wall bed looks absolutely fine. It is neat and tidy so no issue. In your picture my eye was actually drawn to the stuff on the right which looks far more untidy.

ApolloandDaphne · 21/05/2023 17:31

I'm not saying your flat is untidy btw just that the wall bed doesn't look unsightly in photographs.

BreadInCaptivity · 21/05/2023 17:36

I think you'd be mad to take it out.

Folded it's just a big cupboard.

Having a space for people to stay over in a one bed is an advantage that's more likely to help a sale than reduce it.

AnnWithoutAnnie · 21/05/2023 17:46

I'd remove it for the photos/sale too

If you need to start living there again, you can just buy/borrow a single bed for DS.

declutter as much as possible, then some more!! A fresh coat of paint throughout (shouldn't take long 🤣🤣. It's bigger than my flat, so not being rude!!)

best wishes!

Mastmw7g · 21/05/2023 17:57

We have another wallbed for the girls that my husband wants to leave. Here it is. His concern is that it will look odd to have so many wallbeds in such a small space.

I have four children, so if we have to return we'll have to buy more than a single bed for the boys.

OP posts:
saltinesandcoffeecups · 21/05/2023 18:03

He has a bit of a point, but I’d say it’s less about looking untidy and more about making the rooms physically smaller. I assume when folded up the don’t take up a lot of space but they will slightly decrease the room space.

what will they sleep on in the meantime?

Mastmw7g · 21/05/2023 18:08

He's so sure it will sell while we're away that he's not thinking at all of where the boys will sleep if it doesn't sell before we return. He says "We'll worry about that if it happens."

OP posts:
PurpleCityscape · 21/05/2023 18:15

I wouldn't even know those were beds when they're folded.

PoolSafety · 21/05/2023 18:22

You've got 4 kids in 687 sq feet! No wonder you're moving. I'd leave the beds unless you're marketing the flat on for lower than the market value.

KittyAlfred · 21/05/2023 18:31

Surely you tell the estate agent to tell viewers that they can either keep the bed or you can remove it?

Mastmw7g · 21/05/2023 18:34

I just talked to him again about the beds. He said he's sorry I feel that way, but he's going to take it down and remove it.

BeardieWeirdie · 21/05/2023 18:34

Two wall beds in the sitting room will be off-putting, keep one up and store one along with everything else.
