To think we should keep my children's bed?

We live in a one bedroom with children, but we're selling. I understand we need to empty it out of clutter to sell, but my husband thinks we should get rid of the wallbed the children sleep in. He says we can empty the home and go away for the summer. My worry is that no one will buy it while we're gone. Then what? We come back and have no beds.

He doesn't want to store it because it's so heavy. He wants to hire someone to take it away like rubbish.

Surely its worth selling?! especially if the buyer dismantles it and takes it.away.for.you.

Mastmw7g · 21/05/2023 18:47

I think it's worth something. It cost a lot of money.

He doesn't get to decide how to dispose of a joint asset.

And his idea of paying someone to take it is frankly a bit thick, when the very least you could do was give it away for free.

I agree with you OP. He doesn't get to decide this unilaterally, and there are plenty of compromises possible - asking a friend with a garage to store it for the summer, for example.

What's his plan if the flat doesn't sell. Is he very bad with money generally? Some fairly unorthodox decisions were made to get to a place where you have 6 people in a one bed tiny flat. If he's the one that's gotten you into this mess I'd be very wary of his judgement!

He's so sure it will sell while we're away that he's not thinking at all of where the boys will sleep if it doesn't sell before we return. He says "We'll worry about that if it happens."

Well I assume he will be ok sleeping on the floor then?

Leave the beds.

The EA can explain to buyers that you are happy to leave them or take them.

From the pictures it's easy to visualise the space without them.

It's not ideal there are two, but a buyer might prefer one over the other (or both or none).

Mumdiva99 · 21/05/2023 19:53

That bunk bed one is fantastic. Definitely leave them both. You may need them both again. The buyers might want the bunk bed one but not the sofa one.....I don't think it will impact the sale.

e.g. an older couple downsizing but still want the grandchildren to visit!

CreamTeaThievery · 21/05/2023 20:33

I would leave them but tell the estate agent they can be removed before completion if f that's what the buyer wishes.

They are a fantastic space saving idea.

HurrahWuff · 21/05/2023 20:47

I love them! Where did you buy them from?

2bazookas · 21/05/2023 20:58

That's a ridiculous idea.
As a viewer, my first thought would be " a room marketed as a bedroom should have room for a bed, and this one hasn't ".

MakesMeFeelSad · 21/05/2023 21:10

I love them, I'm looking at one for even ds comes back from uni. They are very expensive. I'd leave them and then sell them if the buyer doesn't want them

Goldbar · 21/05/2023 21:19

Is he OK with sleeping on the floor if the flat hasn't sold, while you share with two of the children?

DiscoBeat · 21/05/2023 21:20

Decluttering is great if you're selling. We put 60% of our stuff/furniture into storage whilst ours was on the market but we kept the basics for us, which most definitely included all the beds!

Mastmw7g · 22/05/2023 06:50

I asked him what he wanted to do if it didn't sell while we were away, and he said he was confident it would sell, but if it didn't we'd deal with that then. I talked about trying to sell it, and he said it's not made of real wood and is probably going to break when he removes it from the wall.

He doesn't often make bad decisions with money. I'm the one with the bad judgement.

Nordicrain · 22/05/2023 10:15

Hmm, well it does make the flat look very crowded to have so many bed spaces there, including in areas clearly not meant for sleeping.

But your children having a place to sleep should trump that of course.

steppemum · 22/05/2023 10:19

I disagree with most.

One bed flat is not being sold to people with kids.
If you want it to sell, get the beds out and stage it for a one bed.

But do not throw those beds away.

Put them in storage or sell them, or even give them away on freecycle.

Criminal to throw them.

If you come back after the summer and it hasn't sold, I am assuming that the plan is still to sell, so then temporary mattresses etc would have to do. But it will be harder to sell with all the stuff for 6 people in it.
Price it to sell over the summer.

Mastmw7g · 22/05/2023 16:34

We're definitely trying to price it to sell.

OP posts:
Mastmw7g · 13/06/2023 11:37

Well, he removed the beds and cut the bed up and threw it away. He wouldn't agree to sell it or keep it. I'm sad.

OP posts:
HurrahWuff · 13/06/2023 12:33

I would be too! Good luck with selling your flat though. (Please share where you purchased the beds from, they looked amazing)

Mastmw7g · 14/06/2023 10:20

It was from a company called Breda Beds, but I'm not in the UK.

OP posts:
Sissynova · 14/06/2023 10:28

Utterly ridiculous. You will not have completed on conveyancing in 6 weeks time.
So now you have to waste money you don't have on new beds when they need to return to school, otherwise you wouldn't have 4 kids in a 1 bed in the first place.

Mastmw7g · 14/06/2023 10:33

It is ridiculous. I don't have a lot of hope it will sell quickly.

OP posts:
Tiddlypomtiddlypom · 14/06/2023 10:39

What a ludicrous situation. It says something when having four children and two adults in a one-bed 600sq ft property is the least ludicrous part…
