To ask what one thing you would ban to help the environment?

Following on from @GADday’s well meaning thread about disposable sanitary products being an option to phase out to help the environment - what one thing would you ban to help the environment?

Let’s not get into sanitary products again. That thread makes clear that disposable sanitary products are probably here to stay for a range of reasons…

Ill go first:

Private planes. I’m struggling to think of any reason why they’re necessary especially for short flights.

"This whole thread just smacks of "Let them eat cake" 😐

"Right?! I am imagining a bunch of curtain twitchers who don’t travel, play frisbee (seriously wtf on the frisbee banning-that’s so random), have nothing better to do with their day than walk 3 hours round trip with their horrible eco-unfriendly but has good PR reusable shopping bags filled with sticky cans and bottles to recycle, while tutting at the nice family with 3 kids and a dog."

Lol

Truly some of the worst viewpoints - no offence. Having an opinion on climate change, nature and wildlife such as 'let's have no plastic grass or glitter, or more responsible car use' equates to 'let them eat cake'.

Apart from cars in poorly connected (where they are a necessity) NONE of these suggestions have anything to do with poverty. And even if they do who gives a fuck, it's a MN thread not the law of the land.

And yet, people with this view will be first in line to complain when climate change causes crop failure and causes prices to rise. Or when there's a hosepipe ban. Or when your kid can't see pandas in the zoo and we'll, you get the idea.

Ironing.

Already banned/strongly discouraged here 😂

FineBerol · 21/05/2023 18:42

Limit humans to one each

Balloons
Glitter
Plastic plants
Plastic grass
Plastic bottles
Private jets
Outdoor heaters

Or for plastic bottles and cans, glass bottles etc have them reused rather than destroyed then remade

A lot of people do not believe in Climate Change. It is not evident to most people, and the solutions are just not on. Give up my car, cycle or walk everywhere? You've got to be joking.

The little things are easy such as reducing single use plastics etc. but the big things are not going to happen unless the Government decrees it, and they won't do anything that drastic.

The issue with this attitude is that by the time it does become apparent it's too late. The infrastructure upgrades / strategic choice have to be made ahead of time.

We all know in 10-20 years time when the eighth "record breaking" storm of winter has rolled through and left hundreds of thousands without power again, or the 7th day of 35-40 degree heat has left millions baking in buildings unable to cope, or crop yields have reduced for the 5th year in a row making everything from bread to beans scarcer and more expensive, the masses will be upbin arms and moaning that "they should have done something about all this".

If I could ban one thing to help the environment it would be people who don't understand climate science from being allowed to input on the subject (at decision making levels).

Fruit & veg imported from across the globe (and their associated plastic packaging).

Garden fires.

InanimateObjects · 21/05/2023 19:01

... it's not 40 billion log burners producing that carbon dioxide, it's factories.

How can you not see how circular and apathetic your reasoning is?

Every person on the planet has 6 log burners? 🤔

InanimateObjects · 21/05/2023 19:02

Well, personally I would like less plastic crap in our own rivers

Are you familiar with the water cycle?

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 21/05/2023 19:05

Bananas.

Magazinenotliving · 21/05/2023 19:05

Pets.

Pets are terrible for the environment.

deliciouschilli · 21/05/2023 19:08

Large families, it's literally the only thing that will make any difference at all.

GAWI · 21/05/2023 19:26

'Flushable' wipes

MohairTortoise · 21/05/2023 19:26

I would ban fishing and meat consumption for 10 years and see where we are after that in terms of climate change.
I'd also encourage people to have more children, but that's not a ban.

Ladykryptonite · 21/05/2023 19:28

Batshavebuttocks - yep still the fact that it's too many cars that are the problem, they cause the pollution

Mrsblobby12 · 21/05/2023 19:28

'nobody needs to see a relative abroad '. Yeah, fuck grandma, just let her rot. These threads always attract some really terrifying posters who would ban anything other than living by candlelight eating gruel.

Mrsblobby12 · 21/05/2023 19:30

Same people who were telling you to put cheese in your coffee during lockdown and that you deserve to be shot because you were outside for 61 minutes of exercise rather than 60.

You can't have this and PP's banning fruit & veg from across the globe.

Vegans will be out there protesting for their avocados and Jack fruit. Then they'll just be consuming Ultra Processed Quorn instead.

Disclaimer: no idea what the solution is but possibly a reduction in all of the above.

Cornishromcom · 21/05/2023 19:32

My post was lighthearted BTW! 😆

They can eat peas, lots and lots of peas, plus a few beans.

Mrsblobby12 · 21/05/2023 19:34

I hope this thread gets taken down tbh. There are some good initiatives re plastic etc. But a lot of posts are either from people taking the piss or not quite sound of mind. Let's cull all animals, no more children, never fly or own a car again, etc.
I'm very glad I don't know people like this in real life.

CampsieGlamper · 21/05/2023 19:34

Promotion or running stories which are not of News interest and a requirement for newsreaders not to actively discuss in positive terms.
This morni g or yesterday, on BBC breakfast - presenters creaming themselves about private aircraft flights for pets. On their own. Also how jolly super that billionaires are ploughing millions onto joint ventures with NASA to get people to the moon, or to mars. Batshit crazy.

You and me both. My let them eat cake comment up thread was in response to the Judy fucking walk/cycle brigade who are bad enough but there's also that anti human view where people are actually hinting at culling older people and pets that is truly disturbing.

Pestispeeved · 21/05/2023 19:51

I'd ban people who had no concept of the Trolley problem
