To think thicker sanitary pads should still be sold?

DD, 13 is having her first period and the new "technology" leaves only very thin pads to be had. Even if they really do hold as much as the old ones, psychologically it is worrying.

You’re being utterly ridiculous OP.

Thehonestybox · 21/05/2023 09:52

Just do a QVC style demonstration for her with kitchen roll. You know how you can get Bounty or another super absorbant one, or you can get the cheapo 6 rolls for £1 stuff that absorb nothing, but they're both the same thickness...

I'm surprised by the lack of empathy on this thread and shocked by the level of dismissiveness. I can only assume those posters have never experienced heavy periods.

OP: ignore the snide comments. "Always Maxi" are still available, although not as widely as their thin "Ultra" towels. "Maxi" are individually wrapped and aren't perfumed. They have wings, which are fantastic - ignore anyone who says otherwise. The "normal" size in the green packet would be ideal but I haven't seen them for a while. Only the "long" size in a purple packet seems to be stocked now. I can get them in large Sainsbury's, Savers, some independent chemists.

It's news to me that the thin pads are as absorbent as thick pads and I wouldn't trust them either.

Girls these days are so lucky in this sense. There are so many products available now. They have more choice than ever before. Stop looking for ways to be a victim of puberty some how. Teenage girls don't need any encouragement to join the high school race to the bottom trust me.

Hi op. My dd wears period paints with a pad too as she's worried about leaking. The pants just give her that added level of protection and she doesn't need to change them. We use Kotex pads. Always found them better that other brands

I don’t recommend period pants with a pad, my daughter has heavy bleeding and with a pad the period pants leak. It’s better to add a. Am I insert or similar

Homeymum2 · 21/05/2023 10:03

@yetanotherusernameAgain

Thank you,

It seems the middle ground for these products has completely disappeared. Would love to find a regular length pad with a bit more substance for her. I have myself experienced finding pooling on top of these ultra pads from time to time, and from what she described it's occurring for her too

The thick ones I remember from teenage years were awful and used to chafe but hopefully they've improved.

erm, liking wings is a personal choice, I hate them, so.....

Sussexcricket · 21/05/2023 10:26

Own brand pads without the wings tend to be thicker.
Wilko do some I think

Yerroblemom1923 · 21/05/2023 10:39

Wear a tampon with period pants as a back up. Sure I said this earlier but my comment was deleted.

A 13 year old just starting their periods shouldn't use a tampon

I always get ingrowing hairs when I use pads with wings

GoodVibesHere · 21/05/2023 11:50

I agree OP. Everything's 'ultra thin' and 'platinum technology'. So flipping thin. I know technology is meant to make them hold more but thin I find I'm changing very often - they can only hold so much.

Some night time ones are so long, they almost go up your back!! I much prefer thicker ones. I find the thin ones mean I have to change after an hour or two.

DD14 is the same as me and has asked for thicker ones but they're getting harder to find now. I will try cheaper ones and the pharmacy.

Kyse23 · 21/05/2023 11:55

@GoodChat you can use a tampon from your first period

Why not? Just curious!
my dd did from quite young as she swam a lot, not her first but I don’t see why she wouldn’t have been able to if she had wanted to?

I started mine at age 11 and started using tampons fairly soon after that as they are less messy and better for swimming.

You might need bigger pants

CindersAgain · 21/05/2023 12:21

Why would she be changing pants at school?

Either but the appropriate absorbency or use a pad on top.

Did you not think there is a basic flaw with the idea of period pants, imagining people changing them and lugging them about? 😂

CindersAgain · 21/05/2023 12:22

*buy the appropriate

Highlyflavouredgravy · 21/05/2023 12:23

Get some always infinity. Only available in boots. A bit expensive but the absolute bomb. Ne leaks ever.

What planet are you on?!

Tampons was all I ever used after my first period.

FatCatBum · 21/05/2023 12:29

Buy her some reusable ones, they tend to be a bit more substantial. I too hate how thin the y are now, because if you are heavy at all it can kind of puddle on the top which is unpleasant

elevenplusdilemma · 21/05/2023 12:30

I'm wondering how old you are? I have no experience of thicker pads - thinner 'ultra' sanitary towels were the norm when I started my periods in 1992. I've never known different to compare them to.
