Sanitary towels TMI

I'm pissed off that sanitary towels and pantyliners give just middle gusset coverage if small and then extra coverage at the back if large. I don't know if I have something anatomically unusual about me, or if the companies never do any market research. But whatever comes out of my vag migrates forwards and gets deposited at the front and I've ruined lot of pants that way because pads don't reach far enough. If I wear a night pad the extra coverage at the back always stays clean because if I'm bleeding heavy enough for it to run down my arse and come out the back, the front would have been saturated ages ago and I would have already changed. Right now I'm using pessaries which leak, and I'm using liners but I have to place them right at the front and the curved back of it is right in the middle of the gusset and scratches me. Anyone else pissed off about this or am I the only one whose body works like this?

Totally know what you mean. That & the impossibility of getting non scented ones anymore shifted me to period pants instead and they are brilliant. Such a game changer.

jeaux90 · 20/05/2023 10:08

Period pants. My DD14 has awful periods but also ASD so struggle with pads. Modibodi was the brand we went for, the heavy flow, 24 hour ones in the shorts style, game changer.

Jonniecomelately · 20/05/2023 10:11

When I wore sanitary towels I always wore an extra ons at the back at night. Now I wear cloth pads and I have a couple of absolute whoppers for my heaviest days.

DustyLee123 · 20/05/2023 10:13

I always put mine where the majority of the blood is, more towards the front. Then do one back and front at night. I don’t see the problem.

DustyLee123 · 20/05/2023 10:13

And try period knickers, they’re great.

GeneHuntsCowboyBoots · 20/05/2023 10:14

Get or make reusables if possible. They’re made in all sorts of different variations to accommodate your pattern of bleeding. Front bleeders, side bleeders, back bleeders etc.

Or as a PP says, period pants.

StandUpForYourRights · 20/05/2023 10:16

I used to wear mine back to front, for the same reasons

JudgeRudy · 20/05/2023 10:20

Do you have a 'pot belly'? My knickers tend to ride up at the back and down at the front. Even if I wear 'big knicks' it's always as if the band isn't sitting horizontally. It's not about size it's about shape.
It could be that your 'flow' comes out the same as everyone's else but your knickers have moved. Try placing your towel further towards the front.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 20/05/2023 10:21

I have this issue, also struggle with finding non scented and non- winged. I wear the seam free shorts knickers and wings just don't work on those because you can't tuck them around the gusset. So any of the pad companies actually hire women to help with designing these things?

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/05/2023 10:21

Yeah

Invest in period pants. Better all round

Dumbphone · 20/05/2023 10:23

With period pants - do you have to change halfway through the day? That’s always put me off!

thespy · 20/05/2023 10:24

Same problem here. I actually though about writing to the manufacturers about this - why oh why don't they make a pad that is properly designed with a bit that goes all the way up the front?!? I know not everyone has this problem but I don't think my anatomy or yours are too far off the norm!! I'm quite tall - I don't know if that has a bearing on the general size of the undercarriage, mines definitely in proportion though!

I always put the pad in the place it needs to be but obviously that means the narrow part is in the wrong place. I'm pretty much into menopause now so it's not an issue as periods have all but stopped but it's annoyed me for many years!!

Kyse23 · 20/05/2023 10:45

I just turn them round so the back is at the front

Mingomang · 20/05/2023 10:50

I was just thinking that this morning!! I get the extra long and put them more towards the front but just in general it’s very weird as I’m sure I am no different tk most women and it generally funnels frontwards.

ArthnoldManacatsaman · 20/05/2023 10:53

@JudgeRudy you might be correct about the OP, but it comes across as a bit of a generalisation when you say “the same as everyone else’s” because we are all different shapes and I’m another one who has always needed more coverage at the front (regardless of the size of my belly and the position my knickers are sitting in). One of the brands of period underwear I use actually redesigned their products to have the absorbent gusset extend from front waistband to back waistband because they had had so many requests for more front coverage, so there must be a good group of women in this situation (and moving the pad forward is a possibility but as OP says it doesn’t fit as well and can make it uncomfy).

OP I would add my voice to those recommending period underwear, it’s been a real game changer for me.

neverbeenskiing · 20/05/2023 10:57

YANBU. I find the old fashioned, thick, none winged style pads better for this. Or maternity pads, but they're expensive. I usually end up putting two pads together to give full front and back coverage on heavier days.

Pinkywoo · 20/05/2023 11:03

OP I have exactly the same problem, it's why I just use tampons as I can never get pads in the right place.

@neverbeenskiing these ones are good and not horrendously expensive.

The Bodyform range is non scented.

Nothingisblackandwhite · 20/05/2023 11:07

Period pants , honestly I’m 41 and I wish I started using them earlier .

HecticHedgehog · 20/05/2023 11:08

Agree. Especially if you're a front sleeper!

Lamelie · 20/05/2023 11:11

I hear you. After four decades Envy of periods I had the Mirena coil fitted. The joy! I hadn’t realised the how heavy was the mental toil of leaking, pain (moon up and tampons) washing and buying. Periods suck.

Ireallywantsomechips · 20/05/2023 11:11

Yes!! I am tall so thought it was because it had longer to stretch over 😂

I want period pants but the initial cost is a lot!

That's why I prefer cloth pads but it isn't an issue overnight. Many designs have absorbant lining going all the way to the top on both sides so much less likely to leak.

You could always buy a couple and gradually build up. You don't have to go all in straight away.

No, you can can heavy flow ones, 24 hour ones, lighter flow ones for the back end of your period.

They are sooooo much better.
Easy to wash out, just rinse then a 30 degree wash.
