To want to live by the sea

Do other people get this feeling? did you mange to move near the sea and it is what you imagined of or do you regret it.

I did not grow up near the sea; in fact I didn't go to the coast much as it was far.

I moved to London nearly 20 years ago and it has been good in many aspects but I love the sea and we travel as often as we can; it really is my happy place, every day I wake up with this feeling of wanting to move near the sea, somewhere sunnier than England though.

I yearn for natural scenery and open spaces and sun. I feel so ready for a change and want to discover and explore somewhere new. I have been feeling like that for the last few years, but the feeling of wanting to travel more and moving near the sea have gone more intense in the last year; maybe because now I am working full time for a more demanding role, but I do prefer it than the previous part time role where I was bored to tears; or perhaps it is getting older, more tired and wanting a different life style. I feel like I want to go away every weekend and not getting stuck in a big city.

I will go back to bed and keep dreaming for the moment.

I moved from London to live by the sea about 8 years ago, l love it, we don't go to the beach nearly as often as we should but l walk down the esplanade on the way to work. Jobs are a problem it's basically tourism or retail.
We also on the edge of exmoor love to walk up there and see the ponies.

Touty · 19/02/2024 21:46

Yes i live by the sea, but that is all there is here, I have just got used to it and now it is very boring.

BananaHammock23 · 19/02/2024 21:49

I grew up in the midlands, probably the furthest you can get from the sea in the UK! Moved to London and then at 28 had the urge to blow my life up and move to the east Kent coast. I have never looked back and never been happier. Being by the sea gives me so much joy, even after 8 years here!

We live by the sea, but we live in a city, so we have the luxury of good job prospects etc in the area, built up sea front and beaches all within walking distance of our home.

This sounds perfect @Simonjt ! Where do you live? I live near Bristol which has good job prospects but the coast here is a sludgy brown estuary and we cant safely swim in it :(

I live within 300m of the sea I can see it from my bedroom window the sun rises over it. We dont have many seagulls but we do have flocks of curlews which I love and wintering geese. I also live in a very rural stunning location with few tourists.
I look at the sea every morning before work and think how lucky I am, as the days get longer I walk to my nearest beach after work and often paddle in the sea or just stand and look at it, it never ceases to fill me with awe. I love it in all its different moods high tide, low tide, rough, calm, I love the smell of it and everything associated with it; sea weed, lichen, sea thrift, the seals, even the jelly fish I find on the sand when the tide is out.
I couldn’t imagine not living by the sea now.

JackGrealishsCalves · 19/02/2024 22:14

I moved to the NW coast about 20 years ago.
It was a novelty at first and lovely when ds was little but honestly I barely go near the beach now, maybe the odd walk down the front.
Summer is a bloody nightmare for tourists so much that you can't even park in the town centre after 11am on a weekend as its a 5 minute walk to the front from there

Stockholm, we love it here

Massively regret it. It’s not the sea that’s the problem, it’s the particular town I’m in by it. Very depressing, shops all closing, lots of poverty and substance abuse etc. It sometimes gets bigged up by influencers but they show a tiny, very edited part of the picture. So careful where you choose. And visit in winter, midweek to get a more realistic idea

Caswallonthefox · 19/02/2024 22:26

Whatever you do, don't go anywhere near Happisburgh on the north norfolk coast.

Thesunwillcomeoutverysoon · 19/02/2024 22:37

Since I posted in May last year I have been seen my numerous Dr's including a cardiologist. Conclusion being heart issues, BP and palpitations are stress related from being woken every day at 6am by swimming cunts..

Princessfluffy · 20/02/2024 06:28

It's my dream to live by the sea so it's great to hear that most people love the reality of seaside life.

Beezknees · 20/02/2024 06:39

I did when I was younger and didn't like it. Depends where you go but a lot of seaside towns have a lot of poverty as there's no work opportunities apart from seasonal like bars and holiday camps. I saw more drug use there than I did living in the city suburbs! Public transport was shit, nothing to do and I barely ended up going to the beach anyway! Also a lot of backwards attitudes and casual racism. It was a town in Devon. Glad I moved back inland.

I'm 27 and lived in London my whole life. In 2021 I met my partner who's from the south east coast and last summer I said sod it I want to get away from London and bought a house with him and moved to the seaside. Honestly best thing I've ever done. The lifestyle is different. Slower, calmer and the sea air/visiting the beach regularly even in the winter has helped my mental health 10 fold. Shops are quieter, hospitals are quieter and it has an old school, community feel to it. We now have an 18 month old daughter and another baby on the way and all summer we'll be on the beach's, jet-skiing and bbq-ing. If anyone is thinking of doing it. Please do it! Not to mention we bought a house they would be double the price in London! I do not miss London at all and still have my London job luckily I can work hybrid (lots of employers will allow this). Still see my family lots as they love to visit me where I live in a nice place also. Please do it if your thinking of it best thing I ever did for me and my little family :)

Born and raised in London - lived in other cities until a couple of years ago.
I live by the sea in another country now and ABSOLUTELY love it in summer. It's a very quiet, empty area so in summer I go there to meditate, swim with my husband, walk and watch the most beautiful sunsets.

In one way I’d love to live by the sea, I d love to have that view everyday and to be able to walk on the beach. The downside is that many seaside towns are very deprived and can be very depressing places to live.
