To want to live by the sea

Do other people get this feeling? did you mange to move near the sea and it is what you imagined of or do you regret it.

I did not grow up near the sea; in fact I didn't go to the coast much as it was far.

I moved to London nearly 20 years ago and it has been good in many aspects but I love the sea and we travel as often as we can; it really is my happy place, every day I wake up with this feeling of wanting to move near the sea, somewhere sunnier than England though.

I yearn for natural scenery and open spaces and sun. I feel so ready for a change and want to discover and explore somewhere new. I have been feeling like that for the last few years, but the feeling of wanting to travel more and moving near the sea have gone more intense in the last year; maybe because now I am working full time for a more demanding role, but I do prefer it than the previous part time role where I was bored to tears; or perhaps it is getting older, more tired and wanting a different life style. I feel like I want to go away every weekend and not getting stuck in a big city.

I will go back to bed and keep dreaming for the moment.

Id love to live by the coast... seeing the sea every day would make me so happy

Me too.

aahh, some of the post make me want to be by the sea right now. I just don't want to spend the weekends in London after a busy week at work and I am just bored of the same routine and the same places and the business of London.

We could move to Sydney, hubby is Australian, I could work there, I like it too and DC2 loved it, DC1 was open to the idea; however the costs of living is high and I don't think if I want to be so far from the rest of the world; going to my home country could take me 2 days and I love travelling and the diversity of living in Europe. Nothing is perfect and everything requires a compromise. Just dreaming with the next holiday for the moment.

I had one of those 'Christ we're lucky' moments today. About 20 minutes from our house but we seem to come out this way maybe once a year at best. The picture doesn't do the colour of the sea any justice.

We will be, one day. May be sooner than later. We have the house there in a will. LOL, if we only survive until we get it

CassandraWebb · 18/02/2024 14:11

I live near the sea.

But the Tories have utterly fucked us over when it comes to the sewage pollution. I am astonished anyone swims in the English sea anymore.

It's nice to look at but we have to go to the pool if we want to swim.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 18/02/2024 14:13

We live by the sea but rurally, not in a seaside town and it’s perfect except in winter when it’s very cold and windy. I love taking the dog to the beach, it’s his favourite place on earth and love running along the flood defences. We live near a very cute oldy world my seaside village and several big seaside towns if we want to visit the attractions. Oh and the Lake District. We’re very lucky! The big seaside towns have huge problems with deprivation and drugs though tbh.

Actually, this is very true 😡. There’s been at least 3 sewerage discharges this week 😡. Weirdly, the map that shows the affected areas says that our bit of the coast is fine but above and below us is not 🤷‍♀️. I don’t trust that though because well, it’s the sea, it moves about!

Exactly.

(And I too would rather be paddling but I am immune suppressed and just can't risk falling in to any English water at the moment!)

I don't know why there isn't more outcry about this. People are happily letting their children swim in (literal) shit.

RaraRachael · 18/02/2024 14:28

I can see the sea from my front door. £110K for a 2 bedroom house - what's not to like 😃

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 18/02/2024 14:30

@CassandraWebb we try to stick to the Lakes for Paddleboarding but even they get sewerage pumped in to them WTAF 😡.

Oh that's awful! Love the lakes though, I would love to paddle there!

BookSpines · 18/02/2024 14:47

Could have my foot on sand in 5 minutes from my front door all my childhood and teen years. It was rolling countryside 15 minutes the other way. For study and work I lived in Birmingham and London for 7 years, I bloody hated it really.

I did get to do all the museums, galleries etc multiple times over the 7 years. But the noise and bustle plus as much as parks are nice it’s not the same. Now I live on the edge of a market town, canals and a major river close by within walking distance plus fields and forest. It’s not quite the sea but it’s pretty good.

AuntiePathy · 18/02/2024 14:56

I grew up right on the seashore and miss it a lot - the sound of the tides coming in and out, the tang of salt in the air, the wild storms and the peace of a completely still night. DH and I tend to choose seaside holidays to make up for living in a landlocked county now. I hope we'll move back to the coast eventually.

What I probably don't miss though is the maintenance involved in keeping sea-facing windows watertight and storm proof; growing up, my DF was always stressed about the roof tiles in the winter, and salt corrosion was a real problem on cars. And seagulls. And never being able to grow much in the garden. And finding grains of sand everywhere.

ChristmasFluff · 18/02/2024 15:07

I always wanted to live by the sea, in the place I now live. Moving here is the best thing I ever did.

Crooklodge · 18/02/2024 16:00

I grew up in a house on the beach, parents still live there. Despite nearly drowning when I was 7ish, the beach really fills my heart with utter peace. We now live right smack bang in the middle of scotland, nowhere near the beach, I feel sad for my kids that they don't get to experience it like I did.

Storm Amber? post tides kicked the garden walls arse, 8k to fix. We used to have to do it ourselves, now we've all flown the best and dad's not as able they had to pay.

What a beautiful sunset @Crooklodge

I have the house picked by the sea in Dublin - actually there are about 10 houses to choose from - I could happily live in any of them but sadly don't have the budget for them.
I'll just keep doing the lottery Smile

NewYearResolutions · 19/02/2024 13:15

I have always lived by the sea. I love the sound of seagulls and the feel of seabreezes.

Timetodownsize · 19/02/2024 13:20

I live by the sea in the NE of Scotland and love it. We are selling our house as it is now too big for us but we are hopefully moving a little further south but still on the coast.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 19/02/2024 13:20

@RaraRachael

Do you mind sharing where that is ?

Startingagainandagain · 19/02/2024 14:07

I was born in a seaside town and the first 20 years of my life there before moving to London.

I really missed the sea especially as I got older and two years ago I moved to a small seaside town in Kent and I love it.

I was seating on the beach this week on a sunny day and I still can get the fact that I am now able to get to the sea so easily and that I have a house in that town. I feel like I can breathe again.

Such a better quality and pace of life and there is a lot going on in term of art, music in the area and nearby town so I am not missing London in the slightest and can't wait to start swimming again in the spring. We also have some nice countryside nearby.

Of course you have to love seagulls and don't mind the wind and the fact that the towns get really quiet in the winter so it is not for everyone!

RaraRachael · 19/02/2024 19:09

@OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon I would if I knew how to send you a PM!

I did when I was a child. Im not from the uk and my hometown is quite far from the coast. I always dreamed of living by the sea.

When I was 20 I moved to a very beautiful country with loads of nice beaches. My dream came true, I lived by the sea for 14 years. I got so used to it. I have done lots of beach camping, bonfire by the beach etc. Almost all holidays were beach related and there were breat taking beaches everywhere with sunshine and amazing weather.

My house was 5 mins walk to the seaside cliffs and walking down the bush we would end up on the beach. I got to a point where I felt I had enough of the seaside.

I then moved the uk and have been to many beaches in the uk but honestly nothing can remotely compare with what I was used to in the 14 years. The climate kills everything, it may look pretty on pictures but most of the year its bloody cold and windy. I tried to swim in the sea a few time in summer and came out of water with purple lips. Sorry but I really wouldnt bother to live or even visit a uk beach 😂 after all the disappointment I had. Nowadays if I wanted a beach holiday I will just go to Spain or Italy.

Allican · 19/02/2024 19:44

I live by the sea on the south coast and love it. We spend many evenings after school/ work there in the summer and long days on the weekend. We often say we feel like we’re living on holiday

Chipsahoy · 19/02/2024 19:46

I yearned for countryside and sea. Husband wanted countryside too. So we moved from central England to north Scotland. Thirty mins from the sea. I go twice a week in spring and summer. More like every other week in autumn and winter.
we live in rural countryside. Very very rural. I’m surrounded by hills and trees and fields.

Do it. It’s hard to move but it’s worth it. You get all the negative people but I even moved my teen and younger two, they adore it as well.

User373433 · 19/02/2024 19:49

I live by the sea and all my city and landlocked friends always seem excited about a beach day, but us locals rarely plan those type of all day at the beach days as we don't have to travel to it, and I rarely choose to visit the beach compared to other outdoor places locally as it's always so windy on the coast even in summer. I think it's a case of pining for what you don't have.
