Just a handhold waiting for ambulance

intrestedvic · 20/05/2023 01:14

Hey I'm a single mum and my 3 year old has a high temperature of 40 plus shivering. He's also not had a wee all day.

I've rang 111 who have sent out a ambulance and currently sat here in the dark wondering if I have done the right thing waiting for them to turn up

Handhold 💕 they'll be here soon and your little one will be seen to in no time

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 20/05/2023 01:17

Absolutely. 111 wouldn’t have sent an ambulance if not necessary and the paramedics will assess xxx
hand hold. Hope everything is ok and easily solved with a little bit of TLC.
Have you packed some things like snacks/drinks/charger/phone xx

L1ttledrummergirl · 20/05/2023 01:18

Yes,you've absolutely done the right thing. Get him checked over as soon as possible.

Summer2424 · 20/05/2023 01:18

Hi @intrestedvic i'm here xx
Hope you're ok xx

BreviloquentBastard · 20/05/2023 01:19

You've done the right thing. If you have time throw together a bag - snacks, drinks, charger, book etc. You might be in for a long night and lots of waiting around I'm afraid! Hope everything is ok Flowers

Summer2424 · 20/05/2023 01:20

I have a 7 month old, everytime she gets ill i don't know if i'm doing the right thing but i always get reminded we have mothers instinct xx

DiscoBeat · 20/05/2023 01:29

Thinking of you. We've also had a 40+ temperature hospital dash, it was very scary but all was fine (it was teething). They can get a big temperature spike for lots of reasons but they can also bounce back very quickly. You've done the right thing. Hoping you get seen soon.

BlueBlue72 · 20/05/2023 01:31

You've absolutely done the right thing. My son had this when he was nine and it turned out to be appendicitis... He didn't have any other symptoms apart from feeling generally unwell and not being able to wee.

ASandwichNamedKevin · 20/05/2023 01:32

Hope they arrive quickly and that your DS is seen and on the mend soon.

As others say if you have time gather a few bits and pieces - snacks, charger, phone, blanket, at this time of night I'd stick in a clean t-shirt and knickers for yourself. And clean PJs or clothes for your wee one. Something to distract him too.

L1ttledrummergirl · 20/05/2023 01:33

Paracetamol is also good, I find I get a headache through being tired and stressed in those circumstances.

LittleBrownJug · 20/05/2023 01:38

Handhold.
Earplugs for you if you have them, and eye mask, in case you need to rest, not necessarily sleep, but drown out some of the hospital noise. Comfy clothes etc. toothbrush. Prepared just in case!

My DD was in hospital for a week as a small baby and it was grim, but she bounced back amazingly quickly once they got her on the right treatment.

Tessisme · 20/05/2023 01:45

Aw, don't think you've done the wrong thing. You haven't. Hope your DS is better soon, wee soul.

coastergirl · 20/05/2023 06:18

I know you're probably there by now (I really hope so), but I'd have suggested trying to get him there yourself. Last year my little boy (6 at the time) came home from school with a sore and stiff neck, didn't speak at all (very unlike him) and drowsy. I called 111 and they ordered an ambulance. Meanwhile he started vomiting and I was terrified it was meningitis. We waited over 4 hours for an ambulance. I was just putting him in the car when the ambulance arrived. If they'd given me the option when I called, I'd have taken him myself at the start. Going in an ambulance doesn't mean you get seen quicker. So on the off chance you're still waiting, can you take him yourself?

determinedtomakethiswork · 20/05/2023 06:37

I hope your son is feeling better now. 💐

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 20/05/2023 06:40

I hate the world we live in today, your son is ill OP, he needs medical help and and the paramedics will get him this help.

please don’t feel guilty and if any knob head tells you other wise just ignore the twats.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 20/05/2023 06:41

Apologies, I hope your son gets better 💐

L1ttledrummergirl · 20/05/2023 08:36

I'm so sorry op, I was so tired, I couldn't stay with you. How are you doing this morning?

intrestedvic · 21/05/2023 17:56

Hey everyone thank you so much he had tonsillitis which was really bad and made him ill now just need tips on how to get the blasted antibiotics in him. Took 4 doctors every time at the hospital and they still discharged him with a 10 day course :(

Can you mix it in some yoghurt or milk shake

Shadyladyo · 21/05/2023 18:02

Sheer bribery. Every dose rewarded with chocolate immediately was only way I could do it

icelollycraving · 21/05/2023 18:05

Bless him, tonsillitis is horrible. I did it with petit filous and sometimes a chocolate button.

Seeline · 21/05/2023 18:10

Use a Calpol syringe.
Sit him sideways on your lap, use you arm round him to hold down both his, and try and gently hold his head against you at the same time. Then squirt
Then chocolate buttons/smarties etc. Have them in view whilst giving meds and keep reminding him he can have one once the medicine has gone.

NancyDrawed · 21/05/2023 18:16

Poor little mite!

I remember the days of trying to get foul tasting medicine into young children. I took the view that even when it stated 'empty stomach' on the bottle, it was better to get it in them than not, so I would give them a chocolate button (to get that flavour in their mouth), then syringe in the medicine, then give them another chocolate button to take the taste away.

I also, if it was really tough going, would draw a 'bug chart' of comic book scary looking things to represent the bacteria making their throat hurt. After each dose of medicine they could cross one out with a thick pen. I drew enough to cover all the doses in the course so they could see how they were progressing. Might something like that work for your boy?

Pickledmeg · 21/05/2023 19:02

Ah bless him, and yes you were right to go in! Which antibiotics does he have? I found bribery at that age usually worked..

MatildaTheCat · 21/05/2023 19:08

I know this isn’t your main issue, and I’m glad you are home but wen my cat was sick the vet gave her a single shot of antibiotics which he said was equivalent to a full course. She got better very quickly indeed. What a shame they haven’t come up with something similar for small individuals who don’t want to cooperate and spit most of it out.
