Just a handhold waiting for ambulance

Hey I'm a single mum and my 3 year old has a high temperature of 40 plus shivering. He's also not had a wee all day.

I've rang 111 who have sent out a ambulance and currently sat here in the dark wondering if I have done the right thing waiting for them to turn up

What antibiotics did they give you? I just had to give my 2.5 year old a 5 day course of fluxocillin (sp?). They were rank, and nothing covered the taste. So in the end I would tell her what I was doing and let her pick any snack she wanted before the syringe, then syringe then in and make a big song and dance about how brave she was, then she ate whatever snack she had picked.

I would talk to her about I know they are yucky but they will help make her better etc. She was way better than I expected! I hope you figure a way to get him to take them xx

MiniCooperLover · 21/05/2023 19:12

Sheer bribery and if that doesn't work I'm afraid you'll need to hold him down and squirt it into his cheek. Then a cuddle and he'll be fine. It's necessary

hellosunshine8 · 21/05/2023 19:18

DD had to have antibiotics for five days at 2.5YO at Xmas. I went with bribing. 'If you do this, mummy will let you do...or have a...to eat' not great but needs must. And surprisingly she accepted the reasoning well if it meant she got something. Not that I've managed to convince her to sit on the potty or toilet yet Blush

Daffodilsandtuplips · 21/05/2023 19:34

My dd had a squirt of medicine swiftly followed by a squirt of dissolved jelly cubes via a Calpol syringe.

Hugasauras · 21/05/2023 19:38

We had a similar course for DD recently when she had scarlet fever and she hated the stuff. We ended up making up milkshakes with some of that Nesquik stuff in them with the antibiotics in and apparently it disguised the taste. Not the healthiest but for the sake of 10 days and avoiding hysterics, I made peace with it! I think there are less foul (but more expensive) options if you really can't get them in him.

Mango juice is another good option as it's got a very strong taste of its own.

Hugasauras · 21/05/2023 19:40

And it must be disgusting as DD was totally uninterested in any chocolate or sweets bribes, which is HIGHLY unusual for her. She wouldn't take it any way where she could taste it, no matter the reward.

User1367349 · 21/05/2023 19:44

If it’s liquid - syringe it in and bribe with chocolate buttons.

If it’s a pill, cut it up and put it in yoghurt.

Poor little mite!

I remember the days of trying to get foul tasting medicine into young children. I took the view that even when it stated 'empty stomach' on the bottle, it was better to get it in them than not, so I would give them a chocolate button (to get that flavour in their mouth), then syringe in the medicine, then give them another chocolate button to take the taste away.

I also, if it was really tough going, would draw a 'bug chart' of comic book scary looking things to represent the bacteria making their throat hurt. After each dose of medicine they could cross one out with a thick pen. I drew enough to cover all the doses in the course so they could see how they were progressing. Might something like that work for your boy?

I love the big chart idea!!!

I've tried the bribery with chocolate even some coins (penny's lol) for his money cup which he loves and it still won't work I've been putting it in blackcurrant squash but he says mummy it tastes wrong 😅
i will try a milkshake tomorrow it's so horrible he screams and cry's and by the time I get half a dose in him it's time for the next dose 😅

He has amoxicillin 250mg for 10 days it's bright yellow and literally changes the colour of yougurts to bright green 😂😂😂
I rang 111 out of desperation but apparently there is no substitute

I have to add some icing sugar and I let her put some sprinkles on top too. I make sure her teeth are brushed EXTRA well!!

basketofsoftkittens · 21/05/2023 21:42

My little one had recurrent tonsillitis from 2-3 and hated all the antibiotics available to treat. He had 13 course of it in 12 months. I found chocolate milkshake for Amoxicillin, small cup made quite strong. Or a banana custard.
We continued until the drink was gone. We weren’t always successful but after trying everything I could think of they were the only options.
Now trying to disguise phenoxymethylpenicillin or Clarithromycin is a completely different challenge all in itself.

ChildcarePanic · 21/05/2023 21:50

Glad you've been seen. You absolutely did the right thing. 40+ temp in young kids can be totally normal, but whilst it's usually fine, sometimes it's something more serious. Children deteriorate quickly and need to be seen asap even at the slightest concern something more serious might be going on (hence the ambulance). Speedy recovery little one!

sprungspringv · 21/05/2023 22:01

I let DD have her first fizzy drink at 4 in desperation (antibiotics mixed in, only a small amount of fizzy juice) and it worked! I think the fizz distracted from the taste, I'm not a fan of my DC having fizzy but needs must.

Houseofpainjumparound · 21/05/2023 22:05

Not helpful but I love the yellow one, I'm sure it's banana flavour...

If he likes the taste of calpol, calpol chaser can work as it's quite strong tasting. Or we do strong squash

That can't be true though. My DD is allergic to penecillin and when she had awful tonsillitis she still had antibiotics, just a different type

Yellowrosesblue · 21/05/2023 22:06

Try Ashley’s Treat toffee flavoured sauce mixed with it. It worked for my dc in hiding the taste of the antibiotics.

FadedRed · 21/05/2023 22:10

Ice lollies can be helpful for getting medicine down unwilling small people. Eat some lolly first, so the ice ‘numbs’ the mouth, then medicine, preferably to the back of the mouth inside cheeks, through a straw or syringe, then the rest of the lolly.

Simd1 · 21/05/2023 22:10

Milky bar desserts is what we used. The small sized pots disguised one dose just enough that DS would take it.

Hey everyone thank you so much he had tonsillitis which was really bad and made him ill now just need tips on how to get the blasted antibiotics in him. Took 4 doctors every time at the hospital and they still discharged him with a 10 day course :(

Doctors do not administer antibiotics......4 on a ward at once not happening! 🤨

Monkeypuzzlegane · 21/05/2023 22:16

Chocolate milkshake worked for us, managed to hide it and the colour doesn’t change.

sunshineandtea · 21/05/2023 22:23

Taking medication is non-negotiable in my house.
As PP said cradle in your knee and use gravity. Squirt to back of mouth and it will go down. Ignore screaming crying etc and just get it done quickly.

Hope you all recover soon!

sunshineandtea · 21/05/2023 22:23

And a dr won't change the medication because DC don't like it 🙄

They can and will. My friend's DC wouldn't take the amoxicillin at all and was prescribed something else. I never thought to ask with my own DD. I imagine it's more expensive so they don't do it unless needed.
