AIBU - neighbour wants us to pay

Last year we had our driveway redone which included putting small white stones along the fenced border to our neighbour. We are on a hill and the rain water has led to running off some of the white from the stone on to our neighbour’s driveway which is old red brick and it is now stained in parts.
He claims he has tried to remove the white staining but failed.
We have the same stones in our back garden and there is no staining so it must be due to living on a hill and the water flowing downwards
UABU - we should sort
UANBU - it’s their responsibility

Sorry, but I think you should pay.

midnightblue12 · 19/05/2023 23:16

Of course you should pay, that's the right thing to do!

WhenTheBeeStings · 19/05/2023 23:17

Yep. As I commented on your other post. The changes you have made to your property have adversely affected his so yes, you should sort it.

When a neighbours property was causing damage to ours we contacted our insurance. They sent a surveyor round. I’m assuming the surveyors report was sent to our neighbours insurance because the issue was fixed promptly and we were not out of pocket.

Aquamarine1029 · 19/05/2023 23:19

Have your neighbours tried pressure washing it?

Stratocumulus · 19/05/2023 23:21

Brick acid?
Sorry but being a decent neighbour falls to you to rectify.

Connect3 · 19/05/2023 23:26

Of course you should sort it out. Why would you think otherwise?

Gazelda · 19/05/2023 23:30

Yes, you should pay.

GrumpyPanda · 19/05/2023 23:32

This doesn't make sense to me. Are these painted stones and the paint has come off?

HoppingPavlova · 19/05/2023 23:34

Of course you should pay. You have used something that has caused damage to a neighbouring property. You pay for that to be fixed, and common sense says replace the white stones.

Changingplace · 19/05/2023 23:35

Surely the issue is that stones sold to be used to edge a driveway shouldn’t have colour that washes off them anyway!

Where did you buy them from?

You need to call complain to them, or see if your home insurance covers it.

Timeforchangeithink · 19/05/2023 23:45

Of course you have to pay, something you owned damaged his property.

MaggieFS · 19/05/2023 23:47

Well I'd be looking to the supplier, but you should take the lead on it and pay if you bought something substandard.

Nearamir · 19/05/2023 23:48

You should pay to clean up your neighbour’s brickwork and you should change your stones.

LightlySearedontheRealityGrill · 19/05/2023 23:50

Pay or get out there and scrub it off yourself, why should they have to. How to white stones stain, were they painted?

Fishisunak · 19/05/2023 23:50

Should you pay for damage that you've caused to their property? Of course you should.

Malarandras · 19/05/2023 23:50

I’d want proof frankly that it won’t wash off and that it’s a significant enough amount of damage to warrant doing anything about. If it’s a tiny white mark somewhere then I’d not be doing anything.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 19/05/2023 23:55

UABU.

fireflyloo · 19/05/2023 23:58

I'd say you need to pay if it's damaged/ changed look of their drive. A picture would help

ClairDeLaLune · 19/05/2023 23:59

You caused it, of course you should pay. Why on earth would you think otherwise?

TomatoSandwiches · 20/05/2023 00:01

What type of stones are they? If it's a calcium based stain you should be able to get it off with a biodegradable citric acid based cleaner.

WhereTheSuburbsMeetUttoxeter · 20/05/2023 00:03

You should sort it, but at your own cost - not what they want you to pay.

Will it not scrub/pressure was off?

Rubychews · 20/05/2023 00:04

How do you think this isn’t your responsibility?

Blondewithredlips · 20/05/2023 00:04

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 19/05/2023 23:14

Sorry, but I think you should pay.

ReleasetheCrackHen · 20/05/2023 00:05

If I kept my chickens on my property which is uphill from your property and let the chicken shit runoff damage your property, I should
-have prevented it from happening in the first place, but failing that
-should pay for any damages to your property

You should pay to fix the damage and replace the white stones with something that won’t damage your neighbours property. River pebbles for example.

JudgeRudy · 20/05/2023 00:12

I think it's down to you to sort it. Have you removed the stones (and checked with the supplier if they should be leaching like this)?
