To feel depressed when the weather gets warmer

milkydress · 18/05/2023 15:57

Just that really. I feel so low and crap about myself in the summer especially. I hate going out when it's warm / hot outside.
I hate summer clothes and sandals. I feel bloated and fat as soon as it starts getting warm. I feel really exposed and not able to focus on anything positive. Does anybody else experience this? If so, is there anything that helps?

Yep, me. I'm dreading the heat. I just cannot cool down once it goes over 21ish degrees, I can't bear the squinting, brightness, insects, sweating and feeling exhausted. We're all different. Obviously some love it. It's OK not to!

SoupDragon · 18/05/2023 17:18

You get about 9 months of cold, dull miserable weather.

I'm finally beginning to feel positive again now that the days are longer and the sun has been shining. I hate autumn/winter and spring has mostly been foul this year.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 18/05/2023 17:18

Really love the longer days but I am dreading it getting as hot as last summer - it made me feel sick & drained. Plus the store where I work doesn’t have aircon & after a while, all the fans on our tills do is circulate the hot air. We all swelter & get snappy. I walked into Tescos after work & it was blissfully cool.
Lucky enough to live by the sea so at least I can cool off at the beach.

Verv · 18/05/2023 17:18

I absolutely hate the summer.
Hate the heat, hate not being able to sleep, hate that my hands feet and calves swell through water retention when im not. Hate that I can drink pints and pints of water and not have a wee all day because im overheated.
Hate every last wretched second of it.

Partner loves it and hates winter so we are total opposites.

nosykids · 18/05/2023 17:19

I like the lighter days and how green everything is, but strongly dislike the heat, so enjoy spring the most - autumn is also good (although overall prefer spring as like light mornings). The height of summer is worse than the depths of winter for me - oppressive heat and wasps make me miserable. I have holidayed in hot countries and it never feels as bad somehow - I think probably because their homes are built with the heat in mind, whereas UK houses are not.

God yes don't they! Just because, shock horror, we all like different things, people make out you're a misery for not being a sun worshipper like it's a competition!

Just like people do when a thread is started about hating winter. Loads of posters going on about "cosy" and "hot chocolate" and "snuggling"

Exactly. There hasn't even been any proper summer yet.

Yes, loads of that.

Oh that irritates me too 😂

The absolute worst one though is the expression "curl up on the sofa" aaaaahhh!!

I still prefer winter to summer though 😁

BreakfastOfWaffles · 18/05/2023 17:26

I think in the UK we make the mistake of not investing much energy into our summer wardrobe, because it's only for a few weeks. I found that I felt so much better once I spent some time thinking about my clothes and investing because it's worth it to not be uncomfortable and self conscious, even for a few weeks. I find wide leg trousers and midi skirts in lightweight cotton very good, as well as tops with a bit of linen in. Uniqlo do a wide-arm t shirt which is great. Always buy relaxed fit/slub tops that don't cling to your body. I love jewellery, so have a couple of necklaces and bangles that I save for summer - they cheer me up every year.

Paperlate · 18/05/2023 17:27

I love the green of spring and summer. Everywhere looks alive. I detest the bare trees and gardens in the winter.

I feel exactly the same, I find the sun and warmth extremely claustrophobic. It makes my long term health condition worse and I feel really unwell with it often once it's even vaguely warm. I hate showing my legs and arms and feel fat, sweaty, brain foggy and disgusting.

Things that help me - we have air con in three rooms so I can get respite when it is really hot, keep the curtains shut and use fans in other areas, car has aircon, I use cool spray / cool neck towels and a cold gel pillow at night.

It is even worse due to being called miserable for not enjoying the warm weather and sun.

ourflagmeansdeath · 18/05/2023 17:38

Same tbh. I like it when it's Spring and the weather's nicely warm but when it's Summer I hate it because I'm literally just sweaty and its unbearable, I don't get how people enjoy it. Also hate summer clothes, will always be more of a jumper person! Don't like how I look in shorts so there's not a huge amount of options.

My children and other people also think I'm just trying to be depressing. When I'm really not, the other seasons are just better!

LodiDodi · 18/05/2023 17:50

The light mornings can really affect people's sleep even if they don't realise it. Especially once it starts getting like at like 4am I mean really that's ridiculous.

But the heat and humidity can make you feel uncomfortable even if you're not overnight as your skin behaves differently to help cool you down. It makes most people more lethargic as well, especially once it gets to the mid twenties degrees.

SunflowerLovers · 18/05/2023 17:52

I feel the same as you OP. I even surprised a Dr when I said I feel more depressed at this time of year.

Sometimes log, hot days are the last thing you need when you’re just trying to keep everything else together.

MustGetOnNow · 18/05/2023 17:54

I hate bright light and long days. It is nothing to do with temperature or clothes for me m. I just find it faintly depressing and prefer cosy winter evenings.

Same. I usually close the curtains by about 8 when it's still bright daylight to trick myself into believing it's already dark. It's very draining not getting any dark till too late.

I get a small lift after midsummer's evening knowing the days start to get minusculey shorter again even though temperature wise there's potentially a long slog still ahead.

bingbangbongding · 18/05/2023 18:01

This is me.

My daughter is autistic and I suspect I am on the spectrum. I think some of the issues I have come from sensory issues.

I struggle with the heat yes, but I hate the bright light, it really bothers me.

I dislike that there is nowhere to go to escape when it is hot, unlike winter when you can put the heating on.

The light nights and mornings disrupt my sleep.

I hate feeling sweaty, I can not concentrate. I hate that everyone's like 'woohoo let's spend time outside' and feel like a real oddity.

I hate the flies and the smells and the hayfever and the sweat rash.

Even today I walked up to take my DD to the opticians and by the time we got there we were both sweating. It's not that not- 18 but it is very close.

I think sometimes people who don't get on with summer are sneered at.

NameChangeObvsx1 · 18/05/2023 18:07

I’m with you, OP. Absolutely detest it and spend the days counting down until the summer solstice. As DappledThings said, it’s only a tiny amount less daylight after that each day, but I yearn for autumn to come around again.

It doesn’t help that I have an east facing bedroom and west facing everything else, so my flat gets boiling hot if it’s sunny. It’s so depressing.

And my neighbours get so loud in summer! So there’s no bloody peace either!

Singleandproud · 18/05/2023 18:08

I think it also depends where you live, the heat in London feels very different to that on the coast and although you might be a sweaty mess at least theres more breeze and the air doesn't feel so close.

peachicecream · 18/05/2023 18:12

I wouldn't say I feel 'depressed' but I'm not a fan of hot weather really. I like it for the first day or two and then I want it to be autumn already.

I find it helps to think carefully about my summer wardrobe. I have invested some time and money into good quality clothes that fit well, look OK and keep me cool.

Other than that, staying inside with the curtains closed and not being ashamed about that!

MaMisled · 18/05/2023 18:17

Me too. I've gained back alot of the 5 st I lost 5 years ago, nothing fits me and the sun makes my windows look dirty.

sydsmum · 18/05/2023 18:21

Absolutely hate summer. Hot, sticky sleepless nights, droughts, days that go on forever. Floaty dresses that are supposed to keep you cool but look like a tent on me, flies and insect bites etc. Can't wait for autumn and my jumper collection.

NashvilleQueen · 18/05/2023 18:25

I just really like the seasons and I get annoyed when they don't perform as I want. So winter should be cold and snowy, early spring bright and crisp, autumn damp and chilly but summer should be baking hot from dawn til dusk.

I hate it when it's warm at Christmas and I detest it when I have to put the heating on in August (which happens most years around here).

sanityisamyth · 18/05/2023 18:27

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/05/2023 16:14

I’m the total opposite - it massively cheers me up! The cold, miserable weather depresses me though.

This. Everything about autumn and winter makes me miserable.
