Tell me about your best holidays!

Posting for traffic.

I've never had a holiday abroad or been on a plane.
My dream is to one day take my family on a really wonderful holiday that they'll remember and make wonderful memories.

I'm one of those weirdos who loves people's holiday pictures and stories and I've even watched a few holiday vlogs etc, but I'm skeptical now with so many #ad trips if they're really that wonderful.

So if you would be kind enough to tell me about your best holidays I'd love that.

We've had family holidays to various places in Orlando, Vegas, Canada, Greece, Cyprus, Greek lsands, Turkey, Spain, Ballearics, Canary Islands, Malta. There are 5 of us, me, DH, 3 DC who are now teens. It's only ever been the 5 of us who go away. I would love to go away in a bigger group. But we have no one to go with. DH is not much of a talker and spoil would happily sit in silence. He has MH issues. Not much help OP. Sorry !

Cruises. You shop around for deals and you can get a really good value for money. And don't think of exotic detinations like Bahamas - Western Europe is very cool.

Shoxfordian · 18/05/2023 09:09

We had a great holiday to South Africa last year for two weeks in Cape Town. We had an apartment in the Marina and could walk round to all the nice restaurants in the Waterfront. Also went up table mountain, to the vineyards, on a wine tram, boat trips, amazing scenery. Flights can be expensive but food/drink is cheap - think £6 for a cocktail in a rooftop 5* hotel bar.

Currently at Ikos Olivia in Greece, absolutely amazing hotel. Its all inclusive and has everything you could need for a perfect holiday!

Nw22 · 18/05/2023 09:12

@Rachaelrachael how is the weather? I am tempted to book it for next May but was worried it would be cold

If I ever get the cash for a big holiday I'll come with you, my DP likes quiet people. Maybe they can read and play video games together ☺

I absolutely love the idea of all of them. Now I'm just confused 🤔

Yep completely agree. I hate flying so cruises are brilliant for me! My first lottery win would be a 3 month round the world!

Best holiday as a family was a month in Australia when my husband took a sabbatical. Travelled to Perth, Margaret River, Cairns, Sydney, somewhere else I can't remember the name of.
We go to Spain regularly as we have a family house an hour east of Almería.
Also took kids at 9 and 11 to Rome for four nights - prebooked our tours it was fun (though too hot - never go in July)!

MissAmbrosia · 18/05/2023 09:38

Without kids - a canal boat through the Camargue and Canal du Midi with a group of friends. Beautiful scenery and we drank all the wine and laughed all day. With dd, an apartment on Cap D'Antibes where we walked to the beach at Juan Les Pins and lunch with feet in the sand. Or a road trip to Tuscany and back , stopping in the Rhein Valley, Bavaria, Lake Garda, Lake Como and Interlaken in Switzerland. That was a fantastic trip. But so many really...

The best holiday I've ever had was to Morocco. We did a 4 day trip with a private driver to different tourist sites (dades valley, Ait Benhaddou etc) stayed at different riads, one over night in the desert with camel riding, quad bikes, sand boarding luxury tent. The price wasn't bad at all about £400 each for that part of the trip that included transfers, breakfast, lunch & dinner that the company had chosen that fitted in with the travelling then they dropped us off at our chosen hotel. We spent the last 3 nights in a luxury hotel just outside marrakech. It was the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation and the craziness of the medina on an evening. I wish we'd done a hot air balloon that's the only thing I'd change about the trip.

This trip was without my son who was only 6 at the time. I'll go back when he's older 12+ due to the madness in the medina with bikes etc.

Best holiday overall/just with DH - NYC. Absolutely amazing.

Best family holiday - probably Duinrell in the Netherlands. It's like a Dutch centreparcs with a great theme park and water park attached. It's near the beach and also a great base for days out to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Delft etc. Would highly recommend to anybody with kids.

Peacepudding · 18/05/2023 10:00

A close second family holiday was Italy - a few days in Lido di Jesolo (not everybody's cup of tea but we loved it) then a week in Lake Garda.

EmpressSoleil · 18/05/2023 10:05

Japan. I’m not a lover of heat or lounging on beaches so not interested in a traditional summer holiday. I have been on various city breaks around Europe. I went to New York, not a fan! Japan was the best as it’s just so different to here. It’s also very clean and safe and people are so polite.

Lwrenagain · 18/05/2023 10:28

I'm writing these ideas down! Thank you all 🥰

Do you like walking?

If not then this idea probably won't appeal to you, but we love doing self-guided hotel to hotel walking holidays. You get to take your time walking through lovely countryside and interesting places. But you only have to carry what you need for the day as your cases get moved on to the next hotel for you do at the end of the day you gave all the comforts and a nice bed and meal waiting.

We have done several now in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Slovenia and Austria.

Apart from that one of the best I remember was in Canada when we hired a motor home and explored Western Canada and the Rockies.

garlictwist · 18/05/2023 10:44

I think the problem with this question is that everyone has a different idea of what is fun! My best holiday was when I cycled across the Alps with four mates, but I can imagine that might be others' idea of hell.

30 years ago I went to Egpyt to Cairo to see the pyramids, Spinyx Luxor & the Valley of the Kings, Nile cruise, camel desert ride, souks. Fantastic if you enjoy ancient history.

10 years ago I started visiting different parts of Thailand & Asia to see the temples, art galleries, markets, water festivals, islands, food, snorkeling & scuba diving with turtles & manta rays.

I've been to New Zealand too & did a road trip to North & South islands

I am not a sit on a beach person, I like to explore

purpleboy · 18/05/2023 12:44

One of my favorites was a motor home trip around Italy. Few into Milan went across to Venice then down to the amalfi coast and back up to Milan. Took 2 weeks and we stopped at about 7 different places spent a couple of day in each exploring them moved on.
Loved having the freedom to leave early or stay longer depending if we liked the area.

lakesummer · 18/05/2023 13:05

With dc Costa Rica was great, fantastic scenery, lots of exotic animals, zip lining, high bridges, swimming. Safe enough to hire a truck and drive around.

lakesummer · 18/05/2023 13:08

Holidays are probably our single biggest luxury item I enjoy them all from road trips across the USA staying in cheap motels to luxury over water bungalows in the Maldives.

cocksstrideintheevening · 18/05/2023 13:13

Different holidays for different reasons and stages with the kids.

We had a mobile home in France when they were small. Being able to load up the car with all their shit and spend all summer there was amazing (DH is a teacher, I worked remotely even way back then).

Our favourite place now is Ibiza and probably will be for a few years but have had great holidays in Majorca, Kos, Rhodes.

Favourite pre kids was Hawaii but out of budget now.

My absolute best memories though are of a week on the Isle of Wight a couple of years ago in a caravan. I don't know what I was expecting but we just all loved it, had amazing weather in October. It really was brilliant. Also a week in the Peak District where again we were lucky with the weather.

However, the one my kids still talk about now is Butlins and a couple of nights tent camping at Longleat.

Lwrenagain · 18/05/2023 13:36

These (besides the cycling which isn't something I'm even mildly OK at but thank you @garlictwist for telling me about it!) Sound incredible.

Because I've never been abroad I really don't know what I'd like.
I'm definitely into exploring and and the Morocco trip sounds ideal.

But I'd love my kiddos to have a really good beach and pool holiday, maybe even disneyland.

My kids are the type of kids that would love to visit a science museum or go on safari just as much as go the beach, so I'm very lucky we've wiggle room for what they'd enjoy.

I think I'd really enjoy somewhere like Thailand/Mexico but I'm thinking with my stomach more than anything 😂

For a family definitely Florida !
As an adult that loves country I absolutely loved Nashville Tennessee.

Lwrenagain · 18/05/2023 13:49

@Tinktravels

I have since I've been about 11 or 12 had the strongest pull to America, I've even got an old diary where I've mapped out what states I'm going to.

I almost went to maryland once to visit an online friend, but thankfully, before I got a passport etc she told me how much heroin she'd bought US for my trip 😬
