To think there is no need for a taxi driver to honk his horn

to alert his passengers that he's outside their house, in this day and age?

5 (five!) honks outside my bedroom window for the neighbours at 7.15 this morning when I'd set my alarm for a 9am lie-in! FFS! This will literally blight my entire day 🤬. The walk from the drivers seat to their doorbell cannot be more than 10 steps either.

Wishful thinking for taxi drivers to get out, in my experience! I guess they don’t want to be constantly getting in and out.

How unreasonable you are depends on whether it’s woken up a toddler or if it’s just pissed you. The former is probably going to have an impact on an at least some of your day; the latter you should be able to stop from ruining your day.

Ladykryptonite · 18/05/2023 07:44

Really annoying I agree, any noise before 8 is unreasonable

lanthanum · 18/05/2023 07:44

From the Highway Code:

Rule 112
The horn. Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence. Never sound your horn aggressively. You MUST NOT use your horn

  • while stationary on the road
  • when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7.00 am
except when another road user poses a danger.
TheKobayashiMaru · 18/05/2023 07:45

Most usually just pull up outside and expect the fare to be on the lookout. I suspect neighbour didn't appear so driver reverted to honking his horn in the time honored fashion.

Sorry about your lie in though.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/05/2023 07:48

It's blighting my day because I didn't get enough sleep!! I don't see what toddlers have to do with it ?

OP posts:
Lockheart · 18/05/2023 07:53

Get off your phone and go back to sleep. The only one blighting your day here is you!

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 18/05/2023 07:55

Drives us nuts, as you say, it's not even ten steps to the front door to knock - and the horn use goes against the Highway Code! DH generally gives them a mouthful out of the bedroom window...

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 18/05/2023 07:57

If I've booked a taxi, I'm waiting for it.
The problem here isn't the driver, who has probably got another job immediately after, but the people ges waiting for.

Butthatsnotmyname · 18/05/2023 07:57

Some grumpy posters here!

Yes it's bloody annoying and there was no need for him to beep, very lazy. Complain to the taxi service!

shivawn · 18/05/2023 07:57

I'd roll over and go back to sleep if it was just a few car honks outside that woke me. I'd say getting straight on Mumsnet to post about it probably didn't help you to settle back down?

WitchDancer · 18/05/2023 07:58

I'd be steaming at being woken too, however it's not as simple as 'just getting out of the car'. Taxi drivers are sometimes targeted as having cash and it has been known for a fake job to be called in and the driver assaulted for the money. That's why a lot of drivers are reluctant to do so.

Ladykryptonite · 18/05/2023 08:02

And really early supermarket deliveries are also unneighbourly

NailsHairNipsHeels · 18/05/2023 08:03

Op that wold infuriate me once I'm awake I find it so hard to get back to sleep no matter how tired I am.
It would piss me off all day too.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/05/2023 08:04

I can't sleep on demand, much as I would love to! The honks were a few minutes apart and got louder. It was 7.15 and broad daylight. Sigh.

Lifelessordinary1 · 18/05/2023 08:07

Tad annoying i agree but if its a one off i really could not get my knickers in a twist about it - if it was every day that would be different

NowItsSpring · 18/05/2023 08:09

No horn honking here - our taxi driver texts as he arrives.

Right.. so it wad broad daylight and many people are getting up to go to work and get on with their day. The person to be annoyed at is the person who ordered the taxi but didn't go to the taxi when it arrived.

whatkatydid2013 · 18/05/2023 08:11

It’s a bit ridiculous when they presumably have the house’s phone number and could just call them. I try and be outside waiting for early taxis though so I would say it’s a large part your neighbour at fault

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/05/2023 08:12

No. 1 honk is too many too.

OP posts:
Jantlet · 18/05/2023 08:13

It’s bloody ignorant and illegal. Mine always texts on arrival. Give the taxi company an anonymous call in a couple of days and suggest their lazy drivers do the same.

Moversnotshakers · 18/05/2023 08:13

My DH is a taxi driver and he calls the customer after 5 mins waiting. He wouldnt sound a horn. You would be suprised though by the amount of people you call for a taxi but are not ready and act suprised when he turns up on time!!

Ladykryptonite · 18/05/2023 08:16

Lifelessordinairy, ah the twisted knickers jibe, great contribution

Yes and I'm often getting up and on with my day at 7.15. I fail to see your point? Luckily my son who works in a pub with a late licence and didn't get home til 2am sleeps at the back of the house and wouldn't have heard it. But there are shift workers, elderly people, unwell people, parents on maternity leave, people who don't work 9 to 5 jobs, retired people on every street who don't need to be woken up by car horns!

OP posts:
NailsHairNipsHeels · 18/05/2023 08:34

@fajitaaa it's broad daylight from about 5am here and at 5am I'm up getting ready to start my day still doesn't make sitting outside blasting the horn ok which is actually improper use of the horn
People should be more considerate of others it would make the world a nicer place.
