The milkman, ice cream man and Santa float

Roundareway · 17/05/2023 22:17

Do these type of things still exist in the U.K.?
I was an 80’s child, 90’s teen.
I left the U.K. twenty years ago.
I have lovely memories of racing downstairs as a kid and flinging open the front porch door on a sunny morning, to be the first to get the cream at the top of the milk bottle left by the milkman (the birds had sometimes got to it first. Also, coming home early morning and waving to the milkman on his float.
Do they still have ice cream vans with the music on coming down the road? and the Father Christmas floats on your road on dark, winter evenings in the build up to Christmas. I've been by to the U.K. most years, but have never noticed or thought to ask about these things.
Would my Dd experience a similar childhood if we came back, or has that all gone?

We have the Milkman, Ice cream van, Santa Float and a Bread/cake man.

Redglitter · 18/05/2023 00:56

Yes all 3 here - west of Scotland

Peccary · 18/05/2023 01:23

All three in North Derbyshire, milk in glass bottles from the Peak District, weekly ice cream van and Santa float run by the Mountain Rescue

MargaretThursday · 18/05/2023 06:50

Have all those round here.
The milkman delivers more than just milk though.

megletthesecond · 18/05/2023 06:53

I have the Sunday papers delivered too.

Freshstarts22 · 18/05/2023 07:00

I’m in London. I don’t know anybody that gets milk delivered, I’ve loved in London my whole life and have no idea what the Santa thing is. We still have ice cream vans but I haven’t heard one play music in many years or seen them travel around local streets. They’re usually just conveniently parked up outside schools or playgrounds. So basically, none of the 3 here.

CeeJay81 · 18/05/2023 07:02

No milk man but have the other 2, rural Wales here. A few mins walk up the road there is an organic milk stand from a local farm. you can buy glass bottles or bring your own bottles to fill up. Also sells a few other things.

AmberGer · 18/05/2023 07:03

Yes to all, except milkman doesn't have a float anymore, just a van and only delivers to a few households (round here).

MichelleScarn · 18/05/2023 07:05

Yes to all 3! West Scotland. Santa is usually on a trailer pulled by a tractor though!

Poopoolittlekitten · 18/05/2023 07:09

Yes to all 3 here. Milkman also delivers other stuff like bread and cheese, bacon oat milk etc - very handy!

chouxfleur · 18/05/2023 07:09

We have a milkman. Unfortunately the creamy top of the milk is a thing of the past as it's all homogenised now. I used to think the top of the milk was such a treat as a child too!

MonumentalLentil · 18/05/2023 07:12

We have an ice cream van, unfortunately. Can hear the sodding thing for about 50 miles before it reaches us and then it parks at the end of my drive with the engine running, and blares out the chime as it leaves. No hope of an afternoon rest, and no-one ever bothers to go out and buy anything anyway. I suspect it has burst many an eardrum.

They never used to be so LOUD.

Milk is apparently delivered by Milk & More but not in my road.

No Christmas coal lorry, people do different celebrations here, but remember it from the past.

Veryfishy · 18/05/2023 07:12

Ice cream van ( with music ) comes to the village every Thursday
We can have milk delivered , but a transit van not milk float
Father Christmas arrives on a fleet of decorated tractors
We live in the countryside 🚜🐂🐏

Veryfishy · 18/05/2023 07:14

@CeeJay81 a farm local to us has that too , milk , homemade butter , eggs etc , it’s great

Laura23FE · 18/05/2023 07:14

Yes we have all 3 in Warrington (my family still like in manchester and they also have all 3 ☺️)

MaggyNoodles · 17/05/2023 22:19

Milkmen and ice cream vans are still here. Not sure about the Santa floats.

Same here but I'm in my late 60s and have never even heard of a Santa float.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 18/05/2023 07:21

Yes, all three still exist here 🥰

APurpleSquirrel · 18/05/2023 07:23

I'm in Somerset, so not quite Cornwall, but definitely these things exist in the South West.

TeenDivided · 18/05/2023 07:24

milkman - I think they are still around a bit, but haven't seen one in years
ice cream van - yes one comes round here regularly
santa float - yes run by round table or rotary, forget which

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/05/2023 07:26

I heard an ice cream van just the other day, and we still have a milkman - and milk in glass bottles. It’s more expensive than the supermarket, but a lot less plastic, and one fewer thing to lug home.
There was a Santa float near dd’s house last Christmas, much to Gdcs’ excitement.

Sisisimone · 18/05/2023 07:27

You used to know you'd had a good night when you had just got into bed and heard the milk float 🤣

Still have a milkman here but in a proper van.

Still have ice cream vans doing the rounds and always one permanently at the beach no matter what the weather.

Still have a Rotary Santa float. It's one of my favourite things about Christmas. Brings back so many childhood memories.

Tereseta · 18/05/2023 07:27

All three in Liverpool! Ice cream man comes round all year, even if snowing! My Dh always jokes he sells everything but icecream
Milk man has a float which I occasionally hear when awake in the early hours.
Santa comes round on his flat bed sleigh though not sure who organises it 🤔 we get a street itinerary each year (which never includes our street)

FuzzyPenguin · 18/05/2023 07:31

Yes to an ice cream man, he is massive part of our community, people don’t say want an ice cream it’s want a “Colin” and he waves at everyone as he goes past. On a hot day you can post on Facebook for a Colin update and hunt him down for an icecream.
We also have a Santa sleigh which comes around each year.
Milk and more do the rounds here so not a traditional Milkman.

Hugasauras · 18/05/2023 07:32

We have all those in our village in NE Scotland! DD1 still gets so excited when there is milk on the doorstep.

Monkeypuzzlegane · 18/05/2023 07:36

Yes to the 99s but they are now £2 not 99p 🤣😂
