The milkman, ice cream man and Santa float

Do these type of things still exist in the U.K.?
I was an 80’s child, 90’s teen.
I left the U.K. twenty years ago.
I have lovely memories of racing downstairs as a kid and flinging open the front porch door on a sunny morning, to be the first to get the cream at the top of the milk bottle left by the milkman (the birds had sometimes got to it first. Also, coming home early morning and waving to the milkman on his float.
Do they still have ice cream vans with the music on coming down the road? and the Father Christmas floats on your road on dark, winter evenings in the build up to Christmas. I've been by to the U.K. most years, but have never noticed or thought to ask about these things.
Would my Dd experience a similar childhood if we came back, or has that all gone?

I want a milkman! and orange juice and eggs delivered by him too.
Do kids still do paper rounds, delivering the papers early morning?

Ours were glass bottles with silver tops, full fat milk…couldn’t eat that creamy bit now, but I adored it as a kid

Oh yes! I'd still like the cream bit 😋

No we don't have a milkman here. My friend drove me to the next county a couple of years back Xmas time and it did startle us to see a Santa float come around the corner. We waved back like we were 5 again.

No ice cream van for ages.

Improbablecat · 17/05/2023 22:46

In terms of when the milkman comes, ours usually arrives about 4am. He's called Del and used to be a lifesaver when I was up pacing around with a fussy newborn. I'd take the milk straight from him and he made me feel human by having a nice normal chat with me even though it was the middle of the night. Sometimes I bump into him now when I'm called out on call for work as he does most of our estate. He recently gave me a packet of skips to munch on my journey in - now skips are something I had not realised still existed either! 😆

Fifty miles from where you originated, we have all three, exactly as you’d like.

RedToothBrush · 17/05/2023 22:49

No milkfloat here mind. The milkman has a certain reputation for being a bit nuts and delivering at speed in a van.

Roundareway · 17/05/2023 22:52

@Lottielle Are you Blackpool?

OP posts:
LubaLuca · 17/05/2023 22:54

Yes, we get all three.

cocksstrideintheevening · 17/05/2023 22:57

Se London, we have a milkman as do many others around judging by the milk minders on the doorsteps.

Ice cream van every night in summer, occasional Saturdays in winter.

Rotary still run the Santa sleigh, it's stopped in covid but was back last year.

Rubyupbeat · 17/05/2023 22:58

We have a milkman float, with glass bottles and a daily jingly ice cream van, no Santa float, sadly.

HowDoYouDoWhatYouDoToMeIWishIKnew · 17/05/2023 23:00

We get all 3 here, I'm out in the back of beyond in the Highlands.

I used the milkman for a good while, but don't anymore as they regularly put cartons of milk instead of bottles, and the whole point was to cut down on plastic.

Annoyingly the icey comes around 9pm at night so I never use it.

We have had the same santa in the float that comes around for about 35 years, as well. Love him.

AllIeveknewonlyou · 17/05/2023 23:06

@HowDoYouDoWhatYouDoToMeIWishIKnew your Santa sounds great ❤️

You have an awfully long username!

WhenTheBeeStings · 17/05/2023 23:06

I was driving behind our old ice cream man earlier. He used to come onto our old street just after tea time so we’d often run out to get something for pudding. Sadly he doesn’t do the street we moved to.

Santa float is out each year, run but the scout group.

There are milk men here too. I had rather a persistent one on my doorstep touting for busy last year. Work have the milkman deliver. I start at 7am & it’s on the doorstep when I arrive. I take a flask in in the warmer weather because sometimes the milk is a bit rank as it’s sat on the doorstep so long it’s turned.

Mossstitch · 17/05/2023 23:25

All three here except santa comes on a narrow boat🎅

Crinkle77 · 17/05/2023 23:33

Yes have all 3 round by where I live.

maddening · 17/05/2023 23:34

Yes we have all 3.

APurpleSquirrel · 17/05/2023 23:39

We have a milkman - milk in glass bottles, but metal lids not foil. It's milk from a local farm who have diversified & have a milk vending machine too. They're now offering milkshakes, cream & eggs too.
Ice cream van drives round in summer - annoyingly just before we have dinner & have to tell the kids no.
We did have a Santa Float pre-Covid, but they haven't brought it back - instead Santa sits in a crappy gazebo in the middle of town looking ridiculous & forlorn. Shame, as the kids loved that, & I'm sure they made a lot more money doing the float. Bloody Covid.

He is wonderful, he was my santa when I was a kid, and is now the santa for my kids too.

My username is fairly obnoxious 🤣 just the song I was listening to at the time. I change usernames all the time so I'm running out of names

Snowleopards · 17/05/2023 23:45

We have all three. Milkman comes very early hours and delivers in plastic 4 pinters. Ice cream van consistent at the weekend and sunny summer nights and Santa every year organised by the rotary club.

Roundareway · 17/05/2023 23:47

So is this around the country then, not just a Northern thing, do they have all these things in Cornwall?

OP posts:
dontknowwhatswrong · 17/05/2023 23:50

My three children always
Say the milk we get delivered is tastier
Than the one we buy from the shop 🤣 but yes they all pretty much exist x

Lottielle · 17/05/2023 23:51

No, not Blackpool. Further south.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 17/05/2023 23:56

All 3 where I live.

TheFireflies · 17/05/2023 23:56

No milkman in our area. Occasionally hear an ice cream van but they don’t really stop on my road! I have never, ever heard of a Santa float! I clearly missed out as a child living where I do!

champagneplanet · 18/05/2023 00:02

Got all of them here, although the milk man only delivers to a few houses in our street and has diversified so now offers bread, eggs and other bit and pieces.

Tothemoonandbackx · 18/05/2023 00:03

I have all three where I live, but the Santa float has only come round our area since last Christmas. I have a milk woman, and I think she usually delivers around 6ish. I tell my DD that when the ice cream van comes round, if its playing a song, then it means they've run out of ice cream.............only joking, lol that would be mean 😆 x
