To expect a window in a hotel room?

LumpyandBumps · 17/05/2023 10:41

Just that really.
I booked a room for my husband at a large hotel for tomorrow. There was very little available.
I have just had the confirmation through and almost as a throw away line at the end of the small print it asks me to note that the room has no window.
Bearing in mind the hotel description mentions a picturesque location and views and no mention was made of not having a window anywhere before I booked. Would this not be quite a significant omission?

Last minute booking gets worst room, and they told you before you got there.

I'm sure you're well within your rights to cancel the booking and find somewhere else.

If the ROOM description when you booked (before you booked it) didn't mention it, then yes, definitely.
General hotel description, not so much. Though I'd say it's not too much to expect that in a big hotel ALL rooms will have a window!

The room description didn’t mention no window. It sounds horribly claustrophobic.
I am trying to cancel the ‘no cancellation’ booking and get a refund.

Is it the Royal Albion in Brighton by any chance?

luckylavender · 17/05/2023 10:56

Or the Manchester Piccadilly. Although that doesn't have views. Both hotels long last their best.

LadyWithLapdog · 17/05/2023 10:57

OMG we had that at a hotel abroad. It was for one night only, en route to somewhere else, but we asked for a swap and it was ok. It’s bad enough some windows don’t open and you rely on air con.

TheBucketWoman · 17/05/2023 11:25

Ridiculous they didn’t tell you before you booked. I love a room with a view and often request the most picturesque view upon booking.

maddening · 17/05/2023 11:27

Most times I look for hotels they do state where it is a room with no window so it is unusual for this to be omitted.

GettingStuffed · 17/05/2023 11:27

We stayed at an hotel in Birmingham that had no windows. Instead they projected an image on one wall. Didn't reply miss the window

Doggymummar · 17/05/2023 11:29

I had a cabin like that in a med cruise it was seriously the best sleep ever. I deliberately book a no window room in Amsterdam too, it's like being in the womb

Jules912 · 17/05/2023 11:32

I once had one where the window was internal and looked out over the atrium/bar. I think I would've preferred no window, especially as I arrived late and literally just wanted to sleep.

loislovesstewie · 17/05/2023 11:39

God no, that would give me claustrophobia. I do mean that. I've slept in a hotel room where the window was so high up that I couldn't see out and that made me claustrophobic. Horrid!

philautia · 17/05/2023 11:39

Scarborough Grand? The only hotel I've been where you get into a hotel lobby lift and go down to get to your room.

Fourpeasinapodcast · 17/05/2023 11:39

Personally I would love it but I do understand more normal people finding it claustrophobic.

ReviewingTheSituation · 17/05/2023 11:40

Is it a Z hotel? They have lots of rooms with no windows (and make no secret of the fact).

Missing the point completely, but I can't believe this many posts in no-one has challenged your husband for not booking his own room!!

Chersfrozenface · 17/05/2023 11:47

Many Premier Inn Hub rooms don't have a window. Mind you, they're basically a bed in a cupboard with a toilet, sink and shower in an adjoining cupboard

SunnySaturdayMorning · 17/05/2023 11:49

I would be very surprised if it wasn’t mentioned in the room description when you booked. I suspect you just missed it.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 17/05/2023 11:52

Yes, I would expect a hotel room to have a window . I would find this very claustrophobic and would be unable to stay there .

I have stayed in self catering accommodation where there has been a room without window but this has been where the room lead off another windowed room and the door could be left open . I couldn't deal with it in a hotel.

GMsAWinner · 17/05/2023 11:55

We've used a Premier Inn Hub a couple of times and some rooms don't have windows. We've always been lucky to have a window, but DM came with us once and didn't - it didn't seem to bother her as the fact ours rooms were an incrediably good price outweighed that fact.

Maybe a lesson learned, look at tripadvisor reviews before booking.

Mountainpika · 17/05/2023 12:02

It would never occur to me that a hotel room wouldn't have a window any more than it would occur to me that it wouldn't have a bed.

The idea of that makes me run screaming for fresh air - isn't it interesting how we are all different?

queenatom · 17/05/2023 12:11

I know some hotel rooms don't have windows (generally budget ones like Z Hotels or Premier Inn Hubs) but if the room I booked had no window I'd expect that to be made clear upfront, and reflected in the price.

maximist · 17/05/2023 12:11

I spent a week in a bedroom in an apartment in Alnwick that had a window which looked into an internal atrium and didn't open, it was horrendous - I sleep with my window open all year round and this was summer, I hardly slept and had a headache all week. It wasn't mentioned on the website, just a photo of a room with a window, which didn't show that it didn't open. I left feedback but the owners said it was okay as there was a (very small) vent onto the atrium.

A room with no windows at all sounds horrendous.

greennotepad · 17/05/2023 12:17

Quite a few of the chain hotels dont have windows these days- especially the budget ones. They would normally make it clear on the hotel website or the site where you booked though.

Hont1986 · 17/05/2023 12:21

When staying in cities I always try to book a room with no window, you don't get problems with light or noise coming through.
