To be pissed off with the number of people asking to pay even less for a secondhand item?

Got a thing for sale on Facebook marketplace. £30, in great condition, not a mark on it- costs £65 brand new.

It’s only been a few hours, and so far I’ve had half a dozen messages asking if I’ll accept £20. That’s not just a couple of quid off, that’s a third of the asking price! AIBU to think there’s haggling and there’s just taking the piss?

Conkersinautumn · 17/05/2023 10:13

I don't accept it. You should know that anyone reading those new with tags messages is assuming you're a liar and a theif anyway, right? Or are you totally oblivious to how these things work?

A dick. Honestly, I get more offensive and interesting insults in a nursery. 😂

MechyMagic · 17/05/2023 10:13

It drives me mad too. I was selling some very heavy items that said "no splitting, no posting".... every message was "would you take £5 for that bit including postage".... NO!!!!

Or my favourite - I live far away will you do me a discount... the last one got told he could change the search distance in settings if travelling was a problem!

Thelnebriati · 17/05/2023 10:13

Just the comments on this thread demonstrate why I no longer sell on Marketplace.

QueenCamilla · 17/05/2023 10:14

If I low-ball (rarely) it usually means I'm prepared to walk away with a "no" and have a plan B lined up with a more suitable price.

I don't make offers on desirable to me items - I buy them before someone else does!

Some stuff the sellers have over-valued. There was an item on bidding that would be just perfect for my house. Measurements and all.
The item was on bids on eBay with a low starting price. I came up with my best: £700 and made an offer to nab it before the auction. The seller wanted £950. I declined.
After some bidding, I got the item for £350.
Quite a few sellers are greedy too!

I put a denim jacket for sale on Vinted for £4. Someone offered £3. I declined.

Vinted encourages you to offer 40%less.

ADHDDDDDDDBOOM · 16/05/2023 21:14

YABU.

I always offer less. And I always price my sales expecting to be offered less.
Everyone is broke, we all need to feel like we have a bargain.

Yep. People don’t buy second hand from marketplace or Vinted because they’re loaded. £10 could be a few days of food shopping, so if they can save that I’m not surprised they’re trying to.

Besides I sell a lot and I’m always happy to receive an offer. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, I would rather have £20 than an object hanging about that I don’t want and isn’t selling.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/05/2023 10:15

**up to 40%less

I know how things work for me and I don't care if you don't accept it.
I really could get more childish and insulting if you keep accusing people of being thieves.

Garethkeenansstapler · 17/05/2023 10:19

Flopsythebunny · 16/05/2023 21:17

Its second band though no matter what condition its in.
You should always ask for 20% more than you are prepared to pay because it's perfectly normal to haggle.

And this. I was selling baby clothes with the tags on (brands like Next), as a rule I price at 40% of how much it would’ve cost had they bought it from the shop. Yes it’s illogical but that’s the way it is, and like I said the cash is much more useful to me than clutter.

MadKittenWoman · 17/05/2023 10:20

I never the take the tags off clothes until I actually wear them. This means that I can return them if I change my mind within the designated time, or sell them as BNWT if I’m too late. I’m not a thief.

AnObserverInThisDarkWorld · 17/05/2023 10:24

YABU
People will always offer lower. I can make ridiculously low offers, which I don't expect to pay, because a lot of the time the seller will bat back with a more reasonable price that's a little lower than asking. Then I can accept, feel I've got a deal and they've made a sale. Occasionally the ridiculously low offer gets accepted, bigger bonus for me.

Selling on somewhere like marketplace, the expectation is there will be haggling.

oldwhyno · 17/05/2023 10:40

people haggle. if you don't want to that's up to you. you could always put something like "only asking price accepted, lower offers will be ignored" and then just ignore them.

alwaysmovingforwards · 17/05/2023 10:44

As a seller, you can state your price and either accept or ignore offers. Might sell quickly, slowly or not at all.

As a buyer I can make my offer, might get accepted it might not.

It's not complicated 😂

drpet49 · 17/05/2023 10:48

I have learnt the hard way that someone else used as new condition isn’t the same as what I perceive.

Yep, Vinted ‘very good’ condition often means ‘just the one stain, don’t worry it’s not very visible’

Exactly. Sometimes you're not sure.
I would like to be the person that throws things back if they're not quite right but I'm just not.

Conkersinautumn · 17/05/2023 10:03

Pull the other one.

Have you never seen things bnwt in charity shops? Do you think people are stealing things to give to charity 🤣 ridiculous

Mommasgotabrandnewbag · 17/05/2023 10:56

An item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

misslooloo · 17/05/2023 10:57

It annoys me too! I always add an extra £5-£10 onto the price I want then willingly “come down” when asked 😂

RedFloweringGum · 17/05/2023 11:05

It seems to be a game for some people. Whatever you try and sell the article for they want something off. I find it insulting and tend to ignore the ones like that.

HurryShadow · 17/05/2023 11:05

I don't mind people asking, as I'll often list it for more than I actually want, because I know people will often haggle.

What really pisses me off is the ones that just send you a message that says:

"20"

I don't even bother to respond to those.

If someone says "would you take £20 for it", I'll often say "I've only just listed it, so I'll see if anyone will pay full price, but I'll come back to you if they don't".

But in the case of no politeness, you get no response from me!

I still prefer FB Marketplace over eBay though!

ZforZebra · 17/05/2023 11:13

Not directly related to OP but I’m often amazed how much people charge for used stuff. Unless it’s in mint condition and still boxed with receipts why would you expect someone to pay only slightly less than they would if they bought it new? Add on the hassle and expense of collecting the good. Whenever I’m selling anything (no matter how excellent I think the condition is or how much I spent buying it) I tend to take off at least 50% of the RRP, usually more. And often accept offers for less. My thinking is getting even a fraction of whatever I paid for the good and not having something I no longer need/use cluttering up my space is a good result. Also, I’ve already got the benefit of its use when it was brand new so I’m not exactly losing out. So many sellers are trying to recoup their expenses for stuff that they’d otherwise have to toss or give away for free.

willWillSmithsmith · 17/05/2023 11:23

Then you should either put it on at a higher price to accept lower offers or state ‘No offers’. Are you new to selling?

Corknut · 17/05/2023 11:33

This is how selling sites work, I’ve realised recently having had a Vinted selling spree. If you wanted more I’d have put the price higher. It’s heartbreaking sometimes when things go for so cheap but it’s a competitive market
