To be pissed off with the number of people asking to pay even less for a secondhand item?

Got a thing for sale on Facebook marketplace. £30, in great condition, not a mark on it- costs £65 brand new.

It’s only been a few hours, and so far I’ve had half a dozen messages asking if I’ll accept £20. That’s not just a couple of quid off, that’s a third of the asking price! AIBU to think there’s haggling and there’s just taking the piss?

If it's something that needs to be collected in the local area, the pool of potential buyers is much smaller than if you were a big retailer selling new items with free shipping. When you bought the thing, you probably specifically wanted this one, went online or to a shop and chose that exact one. When you're selling on marketplace locally, your target market is more like people browsing who might impulse buy. They're not going to pay what you think it's 'worth', unless they happened to be searching for that exact model of that exact thing.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 17/05/2023 08:50

Sold a piece of furniture on Facebook Marketplace. Agreed price with buyer. They turned up, handed me some folded up notes and were putting the item in the car boot.

I checked what they'd given me and the money was less than we'd agreed. I pointed this out and they mumbled some story about going to buy something else next and they must have given me her money by accident, while scrabbling around in her purse and his pockets looking for the rest.

Felt like giving them the money back, retrieving the furniture and telling them to do one! CF'ers!

Thing is if no one has offered asking you need to consider it’s not worth what you want for it.

Aren’t you missing the point that whilst it’s brand new, they lose all consumer rights buying from you. Can’t return it, no guarantee etc.

Also ‘price’ is what someone is willing to pay for it as it’s value to them not you. You can choose not to sell it for less but that doesn’t mean it’s worth more.

I agree,it's not 'brand new' it's second hand and as a buyer you risk buying with no come back at all so I want the price to reflect that. Personally,I think generally sellers have far too high an expectation of what something is worth.

arghtriffid · 17/05/2023 08:55

Not at all, things drop in value vastly once they are second hand. You cannot guarantee that the size/condition is appropriate for your needs, you cannot return etc. So you have to price accordingly. Just because you paid full price for it, it does not mean that someone else has to accept the value you place on it. I not think that many things online that I see are worth half the price, irrespective of what the seller thinks. There is almost an entitlement amongst some sellers that becuase you paid x amount it therefore means that you should be able to recoup half the costs. Nope, it is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Exactly this. I would pay half price in a shop in the sale because you have various rights attached to the item. YABU and a little bit entitled.

Annoyingwurringnoise · 17/05/2023 08:55

I’m all for haggling, I always price over so I can come down, but it’s to the nearest hundred or 50, not by half the asking price. I tend to sell guitars and always get ‘I haven’t got much money so can I have this £1000 guitar for £350 please?’ Erm, No mate. I always price on the lower end of the market rate, but you’re more than welcome to go and purchase any of the other guitars of the same age make model and condition for £350, or, like, look for something more in your price range, dickhead.

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/05/2023 08:57

I always add £10. People knock me down to what I actually want, everyone’s happy.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/05/2023 08:59

I tend to price really low on things like Facebook marketplace- people aren’t going to pay anywhere near the half way mark on those sort of sites.

PadPad · 17/05/2023 08:59

4 for the gourd?

Conkersinautumn · 17/05/2023 09:38

Brand new with tags and not returned? Bloody stolen then isn't it! Anyone honest would return it! I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

SchoolShenanigans · 17/05/2023 09:42

ADHDDDDDDDBOOM · 16/05/2023 21:14

YABU.

I always offer less. And I always price my sales expecting to be offered less.
Everyone is broke, we all need to feel like we have a bargain.

Nope. I always offer what it's worth, often I pay the asking price as the seller has been more than fair.

I always decline offers, especially in the first week I've had it posted. I think it's tight and entitled to expect someone else to lose out so you can gain a few £.

OP - hold tight, from my experience, if you want, the right buyer will come along.

Milger · 17/05/2023 09:44

I agree OP but if I wanted 30 I'd ask 40 or 35. It's very normal for people to offer less.

Cost of living crisis

stillbejeweled · 17/05/2023 09:48

Second hand stuff I don't mind a haggle but all my clothes I sell are BNWT and there are some proper cheeky fuckers on Depop and Vinted.

Haggling is one thing but some of the offers are insulting. One sent me a shitty message back when I refused her offer of 4 quid on a dress listed for 12.

just say NO OFFERS SORRY in your post when writing description.

shiningstar2 · 17/05/2023 09:53

A second hand item is only worth what a buyer is prepared to pay for it. I sell on eBay. Have 100% satisfaction rate on reviews. I start with the price I think I should get. Item sometimes goes same day. If it hangs around I reduce it. How far I'm prepared to reduce or accept an offer depends on how keen I am to get rid. Doesn't matter what I paid for it. The buyer doesn't care about that. Why should he/she. I have a John Lewis walking machine which obviously I won't sell on eBay. Absolutely brand new. Only used twice. Paid £850. I will ask £250. Doubt I'll get it. How far would I reduce? Depends on how eager I am to get the space it takes back. No point feeling aggrieved. My mistake in buying it, some one else's good luck if I take £125. That's the second hand market.

BungalowBuyer · 17/05/2023 09:53

I've given up with marketplace, I've struggled to give away perfectly good items, oddly you get a better response asking £5. So many time wasters.

I've use freecycle recently and had more luck.

I think you get too many casual browsers on marketplace.

TroysMammy · 17/05/2023 09:55

I put a denim jacket for sale on Vinted for £4. Someone offered £3. I declined.

Don’t be ridiculous. I am crap at returning stuff I don’t want. Life just gets in the way. Or I might think that will fit if I lose a pounds and never do. New with tags doesn’t mean it’s stolen!

teabycandlelight · 17/05/2023 09:57

ADHDDDDDDDBOOM · 16/05/2023 21:16

Exactly, so you put the price at £40 and then someone will offer you £30.

Sale done.

Yes - this is the way to do it

Conkersinautumn · 17/05/2023 10:03

Pull the other one.

Aslanplustwo · 17/05/2023 10:09

I agree. I hate Marketplace, most people just stuff you around and aren't willing to pay even a modest price, and as for those who expect delivery thrown in Hmm

stillbejeweled · 17/05/2023 10:09

Conkersinautumn · 17/05/2023 10:03

Pull the other one.

You're being a dick. Accept it or don't but stop accusing people of being liars and thieves.

Rubbish! I'm selling something at the moment brand new with tags and can assure you it isn't stolen. I just decided it isn't what I wanted, but left it too late to return.
