To go on a trip round your old school?

Some people on a old school memories group I am on have decided they want to tour round the old school lol. They are going to ask the school if they can turn up to look round for old times sake?

What is this obsession with the past, and are teachers realistically going to want a group of strangers walking around?

One person on the group is obsessed with asking questions all the time, do you remember this and that etc nearly everyday. The same things also get repeated.

Also asking if women can post their names they were at school. because nobodys knows who the women are, as a lot of women change their name.

Now They have come up with a plan to tour the school lol. 😀
Would you be interested in all this?

Everyone grew up, we all went to school somewhere, who wants to keep remembering school days.

i got a chance to go around my own primary school, they were doing elections there and i brought my dad down to vote,he still lived in the area, it was lovely walking around and the memories. Each to their own though.

Last year I visited my parents and walked past my old secondary school, which I hadn’t passed since 1990. Even though it’s been expanded and looks far glossier, I found myself staring through the railings in horror. God, I hated it there. As I stood there, another woman came up and stared through the railings too and said ‘Tell me I’ll never be back there again.’

I mean, I accept some people loved their schooldays, but I fundamentally think they’re weirdos at some deep level.

I can't think of anything more dull! Let alone having to talk to those I went to school with. I have a handful of friends from school but no interest to see anyone else.

Davros · 15/05/2023 13:49

My school has an annual reunion and there are tours organised for anyone who wants to go on one. I did it a few years ago with some old school mates who were also there. Very enjoyable ✔️

I would love to visit the building and grounds of my private school as it is a listed building set in acres and acres of countryside. I still remember how it smelled in different areas and the excitement of sneaking down to the grottoes and the affectionately named swamp. I also know much of the interior of the main building has been butchered and modernised. Even our wonderful head's old office has been changed and her beautiful wooden desk is no more. I think to actually go there would potentially sully the memories of that place and time.
If I ever win the lottery and the school closes I would buy the land and buildings though 😁

We did it as the class reunion. When we got there the guy who ended up showing us around as a last minute (did a favour for a colleague who was sick) turned out to be one of our old teachers.

It was a blast. School looks very different due to a fire and also due to modernisation.

After he came with us bowling and we bought him a couple of beers

I'm pleased we did it. I wasn't a great school fan but still in contact with many of my class mates and one of my best friends is a old school friend .

For me this one of those do it if you fancy leave be and don't comment if you don't.

I used to work at my old infant and junior school, I hated it as a pupil but all the teachers had retired or moved on so it was ok as a work place. My old secondary school burned down but I wouldn't have any interest in visiting it if it hadn't.

My secondary burned down too. Horrible place, glad noone has to go there again!

CaramelicedLatte · 15/05/2023 14:09

Another one whose children go to their old school.

Still shit. We hate the same teachers though! Grin There's a good handful there who were there when I was. Which explains the attitudes and culture...

Dixiechickonhols · 15/05/2023 14:11

My school has an old girls association they meet up annually at school and you can look around.

I would imagine lots of people dont even live near their old school i dont, or people who have travelled round and been to multiple schools.

But lots of people do and them enjoying a look around is no skin off your nose, its not compulsory

Like other PPs my school no longer exists but I would have liked a look around and to see old friends.

Phos · 15/05/2023 14:13

Would a school even allow this? Sounds a bizarre thing to ask. Tell them to go to an open evening if they want a tour so much.

spiderlight · 15/05/2023 14:14

I'd love to go round my old primary school. Not so keen on revisiting my secondary school though.

They probably wouldn't be going to a tour of the old school then. I can see it's appeal for some though. Not my thing but hardly something to be considered strange.

hellohelloQwe · 15/05/2023 14:18

when I heard my old secondary school (all girls school in the north west) had been knocked down, I cheered. Godawful place.
Judging by the comments on the facebook page, many ex students had a fine old time there. Personally I thought it was a hell hole and some of the staff were sadistic, especially the bloody PE teachers. I
couldn't wait to leave.
The posters on the facebook page who reminisce the most seem to be those who stayed in the town and are still friends with their old school chums. I've moved on.

LadyFlumpalot · 15/05/2023 15:58

I went to a school reunion about 10 years ago. It was awful. I'm a fairly confident and successful woman with a good friend group now, but at school I was a shy, bullied, social misfit. Within five minutes of walking back through the hall door at school I felt like I was friendless and 16 all over again.

elliejjtiny · 15/05/2023 16:08

In 2020 when a lot of secondary schools did virtual tours on YouTube rather than open evenings I watched the one of my old secondary school. Some bits were just the same but there were loads more computers and the house in the grounds where the caretaker used to live is now a wellbeing hub.

IglesiasPiggl · 15/05/2023 16:11

My primary school doesn't exist any more, but my secondary organises a reunion there every ten years. I go along to chat and look round. I wouldn't be in a FB group about it though!

I deleted my Facebook profile because someone kept adding me to class of 1999 group. I don’t want to go, I don’t really remember and if I do remember you it’s probably because you were horrid.

1999 isn't actually all that long ago. I left school in 1973 and probably wouldn't have been interested 24 years after that. Now I'm a member of a Facebook group and find it interesting. Maybe the length of time makes a difference. It's too far away to go and visit, though, and I think it has changed quite a bit.

gabsdot45 · 15/05/2023 16:14

My school had an anniversary this year and I went to a very nice event one evening. I took my daughter with me and showed her all around the place. I met my old principal and a couple of teachers. I enjoyed it. I left school 35 years ago. And it must be 25 years since I was there.

Ktime · 15/05/2023 16:16

I had an ex like this. Unfortunately it was because had a Peter Pan syndrome, he just didn't want to be a grown up in many ways.

squashyhat · 15/05/2023 16:18

1st primary school no - made very few friends. 2nd primary school yes - it was brand new, many lovely teachers and I made loads of friends. Secondary school - I still meet up with a group of friends from 45 years ago when we were there, but the place itself - hell no. I remember the feeling of relief the day I left and it hasn't changed.

Marellaspirit · 15/05/2023 16:23

My school was knocked down around 10 years ago and they offered tours before the demolition for ex-pupils. I'd have gone, but we were on holiday at the time. I don't know if I would have even considered it otherwise.

Goneback2school · 15/05/2023 16:30

Ds1 attends my old secondary school. I have enjoyed being able to have a wander around from time to time, at the school musical, PT meetings etc. It's an old school with a lot of history and my aunts attended in their time too. I have spotted myself and some classmates in photos on the walls so that's nice too. Some of the teachers I remember are still around. We moved back to my hometown recently so my younger kids are at the primary school I went to too.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 15/05/2023 17:59

I did this. Went to my home country during the summer holidays and drove by to see that it was open and they let me in and have a little walk around. Was lovely. Not everything is deep.

iklboo · 15/05/2023 18:23

It'd be a bit difficult. Both of mine have been demolished.
