Can someone from a different GP's access my medical records?

just as the title says really

I am registered with a gp surgery

someone known to me works for a completely different gp surgery but seems to have knowledge of my medical information

are they able to access my medical records even though they work at a separate surgery?

No, they can't access them.

whitecompany · 14/05/2023 21:40

Yes they can. Doctors who work in the nhs are able to look anyone up who are in the system

EasterBreak · 14/05/2023 21:40

Their friend might work at your doctors.

Wowzel · 14/05/2023 21:41

It depends which computer system they are using and how the surgeries work together/are partnered.

If you are worried about it, request a list of staff who have access your medical records - you may have to make a subject access request.

BeverlyHa · 14/05/2023 21:41

Yup, i heard that anyone who knows your name and surname, and work in the NHS, can just click your name into the NSH database and see all your records, including even cleaners. Not sure is it true but I heard it in a discussion with actual professionals

NE14T · 14/05/2023 21:41

They can actually, if they have access to system one.

I work in a hospital but could access anyone’s GP record.

If you are sure, this is a really serious data protection breach. And it’s audited so they will be able to see who has accessed your record (so if they haven’t you don’t be getting them into trouble).

NE14T · 14/05/2023 21:41

*won’t be

Goodadvice1980 · 14/05/2023 21:42

Yes I believe they can. It would leave an electronic footprint if they did it using their smartcard or login.

Timeforabiscuit · 14/05/2023 21:42

You can always do an foi request to check if they have access, and who has viewed your record.

NE14T · 14/05/2023 21:43

@BeverlyHa this is not true- you need to have a need to access system one. Cleaners would not have access! Not even all doctors or nurses need it, it would depend where you work.

Menora · 14/05/2023 21:43

Someone can see your summary care record via the NHS portal but tbh it’s fairly basic. If your records all feed into a central system within the GP network then perhaps they can open your full record. Either way, report them as it’s misuse and against all confidentiality and GDPR guidelines and there would be serious repercussions for them

DustyLee123 · 14/05/2023 21:44

It would be a GDPR breach if they should not have that information. You can’t just look up anyone, only who you need to look up for your work.

Timeforabiscuit · 14/05/2023 21:44

Apologies, not an freedom of information it should be subject access request to see who has viewed your records.

It's taken very, very seriously.

Lelala · 14/05/2023 21:44

This person isn't a doctor if that gives any more info, but they are very senior within their practice.

mid I wanted to request to see who had looked at my records would I need to request that from my own gp's?

You need a smartcard to do this and its leaves a digital footprint

Thethruththewholetruth · 14/05/2023 21:50

Hospitals can access medical records but each GP surgery has their own Emis log on that they use, I work in 4 different surgeries so have needed access given for each and have to log in and out of each one when I switch. Each surgery can only access its own patients, we can see notes from hospital and district nurses etc too. They shouldn’t be able to access another GP surgery records, I can’t see how they would have a login on their smart card which is used to log in, they are quite strict with access etc.

Lelala · 14/05/2023 21:52

Would a subject access request show me who has looked up my summary care record?

OP posts:
Thethruththewholetruth · 14/05/2023 21:52

And no the cleaners do not have access, they wouldn’t even have a smart card or login so who ever said that is talking out of their arse!

Thethruththewholetruth · 14/05/2023 21:53

No it wouldn’t, you’d have to specifically ask for this.

Lelala · 14/05/2023 21:55

Is this where I would go to to get that information or should I contact my own GP's?

Lots of people at the surgery could have accessed your notes, for example, dispensary, reception, admin adding on letters, doctors, nurses etc, secretaries doing referrals so you’d need to be specific, as while lots of people may log onto your medical record we often don’t really read them and simply add on the work we have done if you see what I mean, I’d get nothing done if I spent my time reading records that I didn’t need to.

GreenIsle · 14/05/2023 21:56

If they work in a different Gp practice then no they cannot access your gp information. Each gp practice manually inputs their patients onto their specific system so would be impossible to access this. In a hospital staff can access a summary for example medication and diagnosis but not gp notes (which is obviously where all the detailed info is).

Thethruththewholetruth · 14/05/2023 21:57

Contact your GP practice manager and ask for this and tell them your concerns, they have to take this very seriously. I don’t think a FOI would do it and could take a while too.

This not correct. When I worked in GP I did clinics in 5 different surgeries. I could access the system from one surgery to the others. Systm 1 at 3 surgeries and EMIS at 2. Different staff members have various levels of access.
OP you need to contact the practice manager at your own surgery and ask for an audit by the Caldicott Guardian.
