To not want to see somebody shooting a gun from my kitchen window?

We back onto a field and the farmer is literally going round with his gun shooting at ‘I’ve no idea what’. Is this legal to do this so close to somebody’s house? We can see him so we are in the firing line. I mean, I know he wouldn’t intentionally shoot as us but what if he gets us while aiming for something else, I know the farm was here before us, etc but I feel slightly unnerved as my children play out in the garden in the evening times with the lighter night, and there’s loads of other fields behind this one that don’t directly back onto people’s houses.

Oh ffs 🤦‍♀️

FeelingLikeAShitMother · 14/05/2023 21:40

Are you new to the area?

Presumably you understand that the farmer has to control vermin/pests and/or is totally within his rights to hunt, or even just shoot for sport, on his own land?

NotAnotherBathBomb · 14/05/2023 21:41

Well surely if you hear the gun going you can just say 'come inside, dears'.

Staffielove23 · 14/05/2023 21:42

I know but so close to people’s houses. 🤔 Seems a-bit dangerous.

pecantoucan · 14/05/2023 21:43

Are you sure he is the farmer? And not just some bloke with a gun?

HaggisFace · 14/05/2023 21:45

If you move to the country you best get used to the way the countryside works.

Yes though, he's allowed to do what he's doing by the sound of it.

Staffielove23 · 14/05/2023 21:45

We often hear gunshots and I know it’s part of living the the countryside but didn’t expect people to be shooting next to my garden where my children play.

You sound like the kind of person who moved next to a church with bells that ring every week and then complain about the bells ringing.

If you don't like seeing farming activities dont live next to a farm.

parietal · 14/05/2023 21:50

are you in the UK?

friends in the USA used to have to dress their kids on bright orange reflective hats & jackets before letting them into the garden in summer / autumn so that local hunters didn't think the kids were deer and shoot in their direction. I think you are safe from that in the UK.

Staffielove23 · 14/05/2023 21:52

What part of owning the land means you have the right to put someone else at risk of harm and make them fear for their safety? Lots of other fields he could go shoot in that don’t face my kitchen. I’ve got cats and free range chickens too, which is slightly worrying should they get caught in the firing line.

No idea. I ain’t going to approach someone with a gun and ask.

Bloody hell

Gindrinker43 · 14/05/2023 21:55

The gun owner will know exactly what they are doing, the range of a shot gun is not a far as you expect, he is probably doing some pest control, be thankful for that. If you are going to be one of those people who move to the country and then don't want to live a country life, time to move.

VestaTilley · 14/05/2023 21:56

Move back to the city, OP.

NotmykingEatCake · 14/05/2023 21:58

OP you're perfectly reasonable to be unnerved by this, ignore the condescension from other posters. I grew up in the country, it's not normal for farmers to be dicking about with guns near houses, this guy sounds like a Tosser.

TiptoeThroughTheToadstools · 14/05/2023 22:05

This is a big problem in France OP, hunters accidently shooting people in the gardens or in their house. I haven't heard of any cases in the UK (that's not to say they're aren't any) sometimes farmers hire gun owners to come in and shoot rabbits to keep the population down. If you're concerned, could you contact the farmer in the first instance?

Thanks. I love the countryside. I just don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect the shooter to take reasonable precautions to prevent families and their animals from getting caught in the crossfire. I would not fire a gun in my garden for the risk that might pose to my neighbours. When the farmer sold the land to a developer he should have been aware that that may limit his shooting activities within that direct vicinity as far as I’m concerned.

I don't think you're being U or over-reacting. I hate people shooting. Why would anyone want to kill a living creature? I just don't get it.

Thelondonone · 14/05/2023 22:08

The developer has no control over what the farmer does on the land he still owns….

Passmethecrisps · 14/05/2023 22:09

Another one saying ignore the eye rolling. I grew up in the country and gun use was not common. Recently we had a man shooting pigeons right next to our house. We asked him to move on and he did without issue. Don’t be afraid to go and have a conversation about it - if it’s the farmer he can talk about how frequently this happens and what to expect.

PinkFootstool · 14/05/2023 22:10

@Staffielove23 they will be out shooting vermin. You bought a house that backs onto farmland? Vermin are part of the territory. So is shooting them. Shooting is also a high skilled task - gun discipline will be far higher than you'll see on TV. They aren't going to shoot at your kids in your garden, they are professionals!

Good luck if they ever decide that field is suitable for cattle or requires muck spreading..... Or the vermin decide to use your garden.

You can't possibly see any reason it might happen? Or you don't want to hear it?

Where has the OP said the Farmer was dicking about?

Or have you just made that up for the sake of it?

Because you can’t grow crops or grass for livestock if three billion rabbits are eating anything and everything every night?
