To think 3 pets is too much for a solo person?

Hi, I am currently seeing someone and they have 2 cats and a dog. It's very early days, but was thinking about this (haven't been to his or met them yet). I have one cat myself which I personally think is plenty, I work full time but obviously living alone the company is nice, etc. I'm certainly not judging anyone's choices in a negative light but I suppose I worry about things like finances going onto it, is being restricted in what we can do if things progress etc. I

Is this something that would rule that person out for you? As I'm honestly considering going that route but don't want to be too quick because my first thought is "that's too much for just"

AIBU?

Have I honestly read this right?

MerryChristmasToYou · 14/05/2023 15:55

Why on earth do you want a fella for, @ojaynein , you've got a cat.

MerryChristmasToYou · 14/05/2023 15:56

What not Why.

2 cats and a dog…no, perfectly fine. 4 dogs and 6 cats, different story.

Cats barely need any looking after.

The dog could be a tie but wouldn't be a deal breaker.

Sounds like you're looking for an excuse!

QuintanaRoo · 14/05/2023 17:00

For me it would be a major positive. There’s something attractive about a person who loves animals.

Spookysnake · 14/05/2023 17:02

I wouldn't date a dog owner; up to 3 cats would be fine.

TheSnowyOwl · 14/05/2023 17:06

Just when I think the posts on Mumsnet can’t possibly be any more bonkers, we have a new winner!

YABU (judgement, presumptive and weird).

When I met my husband, I had 2 cats
, 2 rabbits and 2 birds, I knew he was a keeper when I text him after we had been dating a few weeks to say I had taken on a new kitten and he was fine with it! I love animals and they will always be a massive part of my life and he understood that, he loves the cats too (he's not bothered about the rest of them)

ZittingBiting · 14/05/2023 17:16

You're thinking of ending a relationship because they have 2 cats and a dog?

Fucking hell

MyPenIsHuge · 14/05/2023 17:31

I have 3 pet snails.... depends on the pet 🤣

Absolutely
The dog in particular would be a deal breaker for me.

Dealbreaker for me too!

I don't like dogs or want my life tied down around a dogs needs.

To be fair i'd also not date with kids.

AlwaysGinPlease · 14/05/2023 17:42

Sounds like they'd have a lucky escape from you.

OnTheHamsterWheelOfDoom · 14/05/2023 17:43

This is a really odd way of looking at things Confused

I wouldn't date a cat owner, but that's because I have a cat allergy, and a dog who isn't cat friendly, so we wouldn't be able to move in together.

TheSnowyOwl · 14/05/2023 17:50

I think it’s perfectly reasonable not to date someone because you dislike or have any allergy towards a particular pet or don’t want the commitment of dog walking (or children) but to have an arbitrary rule that it’s ok for one pet (the OP has a cat) but not three. Bizarre.

Spanielsarepainless · 14/05/2023 20:33

When I met DH I had a dog, four rabbits and two ducks. He didn't call himself an animal lover. Luckily he was sensible and we have now been married nearly thirty years. And he is thoroughly converted.

LittleDonkeyKong · 14/05/2023 20:34

I have 3 dogs, 2 cats, a rabbit and a guinea pig and 1 kids! I'm single and cope fine.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 14/05/2023 20:34

I have three cats on my own.
It's fine.

Purplecatshopaholic · 14/05/2023 20:46

What a weird way to think op. Too many, too few, loads, none, the types of pet - these are personal choices. For what it’s worth, I had 3 cats and a dog when i met my non-pet-loving partner. He’s now a dog lover, but still not fond of cats. Makes no odds to me, the pets stay, they were here first!

Daisybuttercup12345 · 15/05/2023 14:58

If I was the person you were seeing I really wouldn't want to be with a judgemental person like you!!!!

Lindjam · 15/05/2023 15:05

Wow! This is erm, an unusual way of thinking.

No, it's not too much.
