You can't count the Sydney Opera house, it was designed by a Dane

workstostaysane · 19/02/2008 22:08

aussiesim. i have posted earlier on that i've never been to australia. i haven't critisized australia at all. and i think i've been pretty thorough in looking into all 10 pages of posts about a country i know little about. i don't see why you think you should have to 'defend' it.
sorry to have upset you so.

Toni Colette, one of my favourite actors.

Lantana, one of my favourite films.

Was Ruth Park an Aussie or a Kiwi? I know she was married to Darcy Niland, who was definitely an Aussie. I love Ruth Park's novels - they make me laugh out loud.

Procrastinatingparent - my Sunday nights have never been the same since watching Seachange. I live in hope that one day, someday, it will appear on Sky, and I will be very happy.

Actually, that's another thing I miss about Oz - the ABC shop.

MrsJohnCusack · 19/02/2008 23:58

Robet Helpmann was mentioned earlier

Tinker · 20/02/2008 00:23

Crowded House are from NZ, not Aus. Well, the songwriter(s) are.

Surprised no-one has mentioned Mental As Anything yet

eidsvold · 20/02/2008 06:15

actually I did not forget Sir Robert Helpman

Ruth park was born in NZ but spent most of her life in Aus.

eidsvold · 20/02/2008 06:16

find it hilarious that it is seen as such a cultural wasteland by those who think they know and yet our largest immigrant group is people from the UK

meant to say it was you who remembered him Eidsvold

dweezle: I own all of Seachange on DVD, bought by a loving DH (who actually loves it too) who is trying to stop me being too homesick. Would be thrilled if it appeared on Sky so that I could bore everyone here to tears by telling them to watch it, but not holding my breath ...

Actually I think I miss Playschool too. Did any one mention that in this this thread? Possibly the most low-tech kids TV ever. Not on here so obviously can't count as cultural contribution.

Oliveoil · 20/02/2008 10:31

who gives a shit

it is sunny there

Astrophe · 20/02/2008 10:41

exactly. Who needs culture anyway, when you can take your kids to a sunny beach and lie on the sand eating ice cream (a golden gaytime of course ).

OP is obviously in the extreme.

eidsvold · 20/02/2008 11:00

astrophe dh laughed the first time he saw golden gaytimes - he also has issue with cheese called coon.

eidsvold · 20/02/2008 11:00

astrophe for me it has to be a jelly tip ice cream. yum!!!!!

Astrophe · 20/02/2008 11:13

oh yeah, forgot about coon! But how cheap is cheese though!? Here (uk) it costs £6/kg for the nastiest slimey sainsbos basic cheese - so $15 a kg - I'm sure it used to cost me $7 for 1kg of coon. (Am I deluded? Am I going to have a rude shock when we go back to Sydney in November?)

eidsvold · 20/02/2008 11:35

can't remember what I paid for cheese the other day. Things have gone up a little but still good cheese for reasonable price

Astrophe · 20/02/2008 11:55

-I should have a look at woolies online and have a drool. Are you in Brissie?

Astrophe · 20/02/2008 12:03

had a little look - seems to be $8 per 750g, so I am a bit deluded afterall. Things look so expensive as the numbers seem so high, but after being converted to £ they are cheap. Yipee!
