To really regret getting the cat?

I’m not the source of all evil I’ll doubtless be dubbed as here, but I really can’t STAND the cat.

He is obsessed with food. Has had five pouches already today but is under my feet constantly demanding more. It’s like he’s insatiable.

I’ve put him out - I have to for my own sanity when he’s like this. But it means we can’t have doors or windows open.

He is fine health wise, not thyroid or anything. It’s just sodding relentless and it’s making me SO frustrated that I can’t relax in my own home, every time I move he goes thundering through to the kitchen!

Five pouches a day? That’s a lot! Is he a very large and active cat?

Have you tried swapping him to dry food? That way you could have an automatic feeder.

KezzaMucklowe · 12/05/2023 18:29

How long have you had him ?
Sorry you feel this way it must be really difficult. We had a really challenging period with our cat years and years ago and I sometimes felt the same way.

WitsHaveEnded · 12/05/2023 18:32

Our cats are the same. Wormed, no other health issues, just greedy bastards. Dare stand up from sitting down and they do the same, charge into the kitchen and follow you up and down screaming at you. It's really frustrating. I mostly ignore them now but DH just feeds them to get them to shut up because if you dont feed them they'll climb all over you or start scratching the couch. They literally cost more than we do to feed. No advice but sympathy, and following!

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 12/05/2023 18:32

What do you feed him? Does he get dry food?

WitsHaveEnded · 12/05/2023 18:34

And also, ours are fed grain free natural food and have access to a bowl of dry food and water throughout the day. Doesn't get touched. Some cats are just ugh.

DogDream · 12/05/2023 18:34

What food is it? High protein fills them up better than the junk food types. Could try swapping his food if it could be higher in protein?

Reallyhatingcat · 12/05/2023 18:34

He won’t eat dry food - he’s an absolute dick!

OP posts:
rainraingoawaay · 12/05/2023 18:34

What are you feeding him?

Some wet pouches have recently changed sizes so the cats need more per day.

How long have you had him? Can you get an auto feeder so he knows he'll get food when it goes off and the machine feeds rather than you?

Billybagpuss · 12/05/2023 18:34

Has he been wormed?
the other thing you can try is switching to a high quality food, when we switched ours to canagan he was a completely different cat, he went from stealing anything that was left unguarded for more than 2 seconds to not even fussing for food.

Thank you SO much for this! Don’t get me wrong I’d never mistreat him but I have to say he’s not enormously adding to my life at the moment!

OP posts:
Reallyhatingcat · 12/05/2023 18:36

And he’s wormed etc … I promise I wouldn’t let him suffer, he really is just that greedy and obsessed with food.

He won’t eat dry food - he’s an absolute dick!

Try putting a bit of warm water on it to start with, not much just enough to let the juices run a bit.

SoTired12 · 12/05/2023 18:37

Mine is the same 😭 he just constantly gallops from living room to kitchen. Even when his bowl is full he'll still be darting infront of me to get to the kitchen. Sometimes I pretend to fill his bowl so he will then eat the food that was already in there 🙃 He's a strange little thing.

tillyandmilly · 12/05/2023 18:37

My sister feeds on demand as they constantly run to their bowls - she mixes wet with dry crunchies - however in the summer they don't bother her so much as they are more interested in the garden and its wildlife !

DRS1970 · 12/05/2023 18:38

Are you sure they don't have worms?

Reallyhatingcat · 12/05/2023 18:39

Mines done that as well @SoTired12 . Put food in bowl, he didn’t see me do it so it didn’t happen Hmm

minipie · 12/05/2023 18:40

I’m a slightly mean cat slave and would probably switch him to dry whether he liked it or not, gradually by mixing with wet. If he’s really that hungry he’ll eat it eventually… maybe with one wet pouch at a set time every day but no more. That way hopefully you’d get pestered at that one time but not so much the rest of the day. However I’ve never had a fussy eater cat so this may be rubbish advice!

Liverpoodle · 12/05/2023 18:40

Well he is doing this because it works. Just feed him in a routine, twice a day should be enough. In the wild they would kill something and eat tonnes then not eat for ages.

WitsHaveEnded · 12/05/2023 18:41

No I feel your pain, ours don't even come near you unless they want feeding. They sit at the window watching you if you go outside, then charge into the kitchen the minute you're in. I'm not ashamed to say I don't enjoy them at all, I look after them out of duty, however I'm the minority so...

If it's otherwise healthy then be strong and stick to set meal times. Easier said than done I know. They don't even really bother me for food that much anymore, but absolutely harass the life out of DH so I know a lot of it's learned and behavioural. He's just got up now and is giving them a treat stick... fuck my life.

SmellingSnow · 12/05/2023 18:42

What tests did he have at the vet?

Reallyhatingcat · 12/05/2023 18:44

I really try not to give in but he’s so persistent that it’s hard not to, sometimes. But even then it doesn’t work as he will have one meal and then immediately after want another. I don’t mean half an hour or an hour later, it’s immediate, that very second!

OP posts:
zurala · 12/05/2023 18:45

Is he getting enough affection and playtime? My older cat does this when he actually wants a cuddle and a love.

ghostyslovesheets · 12/05/2023 18:45

I bet he's a tabby! I have a tabby twat - oriental mixed breed - he is obsessed with food and also refuses dry food - even dreamies!

He is on 3 pouches a day - 8am, 3pm and 8pm - he begs for food roughly 1.5 hours before his next meal - and is always under my feet - you get used to it OP - they are just stupid food maniacs

Do you play with them? Interact with them?

it’s surprising how many cat owners mistake meowing for attention/play/affection as meowing for food

and then in response to the meowing they feed the cat. So they actually train the cat to meow for a food reward and it becomes a self-fulfilling activity.

@Reallyhatingcat try playing with your cat when he meows, also give him a few minutes of fuss and attention. You may be surprised at how quickly the behaviour changes

FlamingMadKatie · 12/05/2023 18:46

Take him to be rehomed to a loving home, he deserves better and you can regain your equilibrium!
