A few weeks ago I picked up an older cat from the local cattery.
He is completely black. He is 16 years old. Nearly blind.
His owner unfortunately passed away he was found left in the house.
She lived on her own. And only 68.
The cattery had his full history, age, name etc from family.

Now to the problem.
He was in our side garden when a lady walked past as I was shouting
to him. His name is BLACKIE.
She was calling me all sorts of names.

How can I change his name at his age.
I'm not sure he will last for years.

Cats do know and respond to their names. Mere mortals who serve more than one cat will testify to this.

I’ve owned cats for 25 years. Can’t recall an occasion when a random passer-by has overheard me shouting their name.

I hope you have a Black neighbour who calls her cat Whitey. Then when you complain, 0change name to Shitey.

Ridiculous post😂

I don't believe a word of it and you've not even made it sound interesting in Friday night goady fashion.

OP never came back, what a shocker...

Emeraldrings · 15/05/2023 10:12

If you think that's bad you should have seen my neighbor's reaction when she found out my DD had named her toy polar bear Whitey!
Maybe just change his name to keep the peace but it is ridiculous you have to.

Not ridiculous when the cats name is a racist slur.

On the off chance the OP is genuine, cats can learn new names, even older cats. Sometimes accidentally - I called my cat trouble a couple of times - as in 'Hello Trouble' when he came in and he started responding to it as if it were his name, so I stopped.

I adopted a cat called Kipper and didn't like it so I decided to call her Pippa. She answered to it immediately.

Why were you shouting at him?

he barely knows you from Adam so hardly likely to obey you

Don't be an idiot, she was calling the cat.

Nooneknowswhatgoesonbehindcloseddoors · 24/06/2023 22:54

Don't tell me: the woman who was walking past as you were shouting out "blackie" was black?

I don't believe a word of it.
