To be fed up about weather forecast for holiday

PeacheyPeach · 12/05/2023 11:09

Have booked to go to South of France in 10 days. Have checked weather forecast and its raining virtually every day!
Now I just feel like I can't be bothered to go!
It's the only holiday we will have this year and I feel so disappointed that its going to rubbish weather.
I know I need to get over it but am I wrong to wish we could cancel it!!

Same Op I feel your pain we're off to Montenegro and the forecast is rain every day and has been for the last 2 weeks.

It's supposed to be a beach holiday too.

Delatron · 12/05/2023 15:31

Yes if you didn’t realise - you wouldn’t go to France in May and expect sun every day or even much warmth.

oiltrader · 12/05/2023 13:56

Read the room. People cant afford heating bills and put food on the table. First world problem I think. x

Maybe the OP doesn't have a lot of money and she has saved really hard to take her children away ?? People tend to be most upset about poor weather on holidays if they haven't been away for ages and won't get to go again for a long time either .

Delatron · 12/05/2023 15:32

Or anywhere in Europe to be honest. It’s risky just about anywhere in May. You need to be mid June onwards for more reliable heat (and in my experience France is never reliable for sun/heat).

PinkOrangeTulip · 12/05/2023 15:34

I know it’s rubbish to see that op, but there is no way of knowing the exact weather that far ahead. Look at how quickly it changes forecast with local weather here! Last week , on my app, it showed rain clouds all week. Even 4 days ago, it was saying clouds, rain , possible storm warnings… The last 3 days we have had sunshine. Lovely blue skies, 15 degrees outside. We’ve spent the morning in the park today.

I wouldn’t cancel - try to be optimistic about it, I’m sure it won’t be raining non stop for 10 days.

Scarbsbeach · 12/05/2023 15:44

Snap! I’m going to Nice at much the same time, and have been watching the 10 day forecast with a sinking heart! But from experience I know it can be changeable, sometimes cooler than I hoped for, but usually better than forecast, and that the rain doesn’t last long.

So I’m going to be optimistic, and pack a jacket, umbrella and sneakers in case, alongside my sunscreen!

Modda · 12/05/2023 17:41

France in May is a dodgy choice if you want guaranteed sun.

We are heading to beziers x

Where are you staying? We had a brilliant week there once on a campsite next to the sea. I can’t remember the name of it though.

Chanelsunnies · 13/05/2023 09:45

Looking like you’re going to get some lovely days now OP!

Weather forecasting is a very important part of my industry, I work directly with colleagues in the Met office. Forecasting can be reasonably accurate up to about 5 days ahead, beyond that everything can change so it could be completely different by the time you go, don't panic (yet).

Figmentofmyimagination · 13/05/2023 09:58

I’ve just come back from walking in the alps and it rained continuously for the first 2 days. We still managed the scheduled walks holding an umbrella - the killer for me is windy rain. That really is horrid - but if it’s rain without wind you should still be able to have a nice time. Invest in some ‘walking’ trousers/shorts eg craghoppers as these dry almost instantly.

As soon as the sun comes out (which it will) at this time of the year it will be as if everything has been washed clean - all the colours etc, the flowers will come out and the rivers etc will be more impressive. This cheered me up.

Threeleafclover · 13/05/2023 10:10

I went to the south of France a few years ago in early June and the forecast said rain every day, even up to the day before we were leaving. We ended up having rain one afternoon and the rest of the week was sunny and bright blue skies, slightly too hot if anything. So don't worry too much, I might be getting this wrong but I think it's quite hard to forecast areas on the sea with hilly areas behind them? The weather can change quite quickly and be hard to predict.

CeeJay81 · 13/05/2023 10:20

The can't accurately predict 10 days ahead. After about 5 or 6 days, it really is guess work. It can change pretty quickly. At the moment it shows a lot of showers across the western med but even then they can predict exactly where they will hit.

polkadotdalmation · 13/05/2023 10:40

The bloody central hearing came on this morning. I too am sick of this weather.

Don't be daft!

It's a thread on an online site which is clearly titled that it's about a holiday. No one is forced to read and agate with it.

Do you want to cancel all the holiday threads, maybe the ones too about investments, house renovations, privates schools etc?

Yes, it's quite hard to predict for coastal areas generally and even more so with hills/mountains. You'll often get a microclimate where the forecast for the region will be one thing, and it will be that a mile or so inland, but on the coast it's completely different.

CatsOnTheChair · 15/05/2023 11:47

On Saturday the forecast for yesterday was rain all day.
I dried 2 loads of washing on the line, then walked 10km with DS1. It rained as we go in the car at 5.30.

Ignore the forecast (but pack a waterproof), and enjoy your holiday. Chances are thr forecast is wrong that far out.

Atishoos · 15/05/2023 13:59

Oh I hope it improves for you, but either way that area is great. You could try a trip on the Canal du Midi - there are covered barges and boats just in case! You can take a short train ride to Carcassonne for the day, and visit the wineries, it doesn't rain inside the tasting rooms!

Best of luck.

Bimblesalong · 15/05/2023 15:45

Currently packing to fly out to Nice at the end of the week and then on into Spain. I have a range of options! Let’s hope it’s better than forecast - there’ll still be wine and pastries!

ghostyslovesheets · 15/05/2023 16:03

Oh I am very jealous - love Beziers - we once had a 40 degree heatwaves there - rain is preferable - we have stated 3 times - we had a few thunderstorms and cloudy days but hopefully you will get sun

We Eurocamped at Valras Plage - I wonder if that's where you went @MissingMoominMamma

PeacheyPeach · 15/05/2023 17:35

Thanks everyone for all your kind words of encouragement 🙏 😊

Well I’m in Nice now. It’s been drizzly on and off but it’s lovely to be here. Plenty of cafes with umbrellas out to protect the people from the rain whilst we have wine. It’s looking better from tomorrow for a few days at least. It’s a great place to be.

Hedjwitch · 20/05/2023 20:26

Dont be disheartened. Just had a glorious 4 days in the Outer Hebrides despite an initial horrible forecast.
