To think this is a massive jump in car insurance?

For years my car insurance has been around the same, about £350ish. No claims or changes. I’ve just been quoted £520 for renewal! Comparison sites are at £1000.

What are others paying?

Mine is 30 a month for fully comp, plus business use. All the usual full breakdown/legal etc with LLoyds. 2lt Citroen Picasso

Rubytinsleslippers · 11/05/2023 07:42

Our quote was double! No claims, no change nothing. I asked why such a jump and they said cost of living / Brexit / car parts more expensive so they are paying out more... Changed to somewhere else and paying less than old company... Just look around.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 11/05/2023 07:47

2 cars, both between £250 and £300 a year. I'm 38 with 15 years no claims. Try a different comparison site unless it's because you've claimed.

AmazonAmazine · 11/05/2023 07:47

I’m going to ring when they open and cancel the auto renewal and shop around. It’s a surprise I guess, admiral have been so reasonable every year I haven’t shopped around.

I’m in my 40s haven’t claimed once in 20 years. Had the same car for 10. Must be pretty low risk!

Mine is £200 a year, renewed in March. Late 40s, car is 15 years old. 1 claim 6 years ago (a no fault accident).

stackhead · 11/05/2023 07:54

Shop around and consider an excess protect policy - so you have a bigger excess on your car insurance (lowering the price).

Winkenblinkenandnod · 11/05/2023 07:57

This seems to happen to me every year, whichever company I use so I always say no to automatic renewal then when the quote comes in I phone up and ask them for a better price and they almost always put it back down to what it was previous year or better. It does make me mad though that they don't give you a fair price initially and presumably a lot of people renew automatically and end up paying more than they need to.

iknowimcoming · 11/05/2023 08:00

Ring admiral and say you've had a quote from direct line for £400 but you really want to stay with them as they've been so good over the last few years - is there any way they can beat the direct line quote?

You HAVE to do this every so often with all insurance companies ime (home insurance etc too) otherwise they just quietly sneak the price up and up - good luck!

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 11/05/2023 08:01

It always happens.

I was with Tesco a few years ago and they wanted to triple it after a no-fault accident 🙄

Moved to Churchill who charged me less than the original Tesco policy.

Then Churchill doubled it so I went back to Tesco again who were even cheaper 🙈

Always shop around!

Billblight · 11/05/2023 08:04

I thought they recently outlawed offering discounts to new customers while penalising those who auto renew.

a lot of insurers dropped their prices during covid to reflect the fact that people weren’t driving much. That will have ended.

SweetiePi3 · 11/05/2023 08:05

Insurance companies are inherently dishonest. If you have to make a claim, they treat you like a criminal.

cakeorwine · 11/05/2023 08:07

I used to get breakdown cover with mine. I looked at the cover they were offering in the quote and it had doubled compared to last year. No negotiation so I cancelled the breakdown cover, and got my own breakdown cover elsewhere.

I guess they rely on customer apathy not to shop around.

And that's on my job to do this week as well. Because Churchill are taking the piss on the renewal for that.

AndSoFinally · 11/05/2023 08:11

Not car insurance, but my home insurance went from £400 to £2k for no reason!

Went with a different insurer for about the same original price.

Sometimes they just don't seem to want your business 🤷🏻

PollyPeptide · 11/05/2023 08:14

I've just been through a comparison site and mine's cheaper. Always include someone else on the policy - it reduces the price. (Depending on drivers record, of course!)

AmazonAmazine · 11/05/2023 08:25

I think I was in shock. Admiral weren’t like that. Since 2016 they’ve matched lowest quotes, no hassle.
Ive found another on money supermarket which is only £5 more than last year. I think I saw it and panicked it was a increase everywhere as previously they’ve never done big increases.

I change insurance companies for car/house every single year. Household renewal was £220, found an alternative for £96 plus I received a £20 Halford voucher. No one should just accept the renewal price without shopping around.

WarningToTheCurious · 11/05/2023 08:43

I increased the rebuild cost and contents cover on our home insurance and the premium came down hugely. Even the insurance company rep was surprised (so much so that he ran the figures again). I expect it will shoot up again this year.

Bullshot · 05/06/2023 12:15

I have just posted this very same thing - as our multi car policy has increased a lot.

However after spending a couple of hours on comparison sites and other companies I can't get it lower. So that's that .

Minikievs · 05/06/2023 12:53

Mine went from £240 to £620!!! No changes at all and an extra year on top of my 10 year NCD. I nearly fell on the floor when the renewal came through.
I've now got it for £300

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 05/06/2023 13:00

I'm with Admiral as well and due renewal soon.

Also have an outstanding claim from Dec where I skidded into a parked car in the snow. Not sure how to go about switching whilst an open claim is there?

PaterPower · 05/06/2023 13:02

If your car’s now 10+ years old then parts availability might be something they’ll factor in.

Nope - mine is 8 years old and a very popular model . DH car is 4 years old

Flowerblooms · 05/06/2023 13:16

Just had my renewal land it’s gone from £301 last year to £672 this year!! I have cancelled the renewal and been shopping around, they are all ranging from £650 - £740! With everything else going up I am already struggling to stay on top of all bills so can not afford such an increase. Have no idea what I will be doing I have 2 weeks till my insurance ends. I really need my car to get to work and do the school run😫
