To think this is a massive jump in car insurance?

For years my car insurance has been around the same, about £350ish. No claims or changes. I’ve just been quoted £520 for renewal! Comparison sites are at £1000.

What are others paying?

Mine actually went down at renewal last year. Just by something like £20 but still....that's never happened before

PerfectYear321 · 05/06/2023 14:42

Sorry, not last year, last month

chupachucks · 05/06/2023 15:06

My renewal went up by £150 for no reason a few months ago then to add insult to injury after I paid for renewal they contacted me claiming I was under investigation by them for mileage fraud.

At the start of this year I changed company's I work for doing exactly the same job but I had a choice of how often I worked from home. So I went on a few comparison sites to see how my yearly mileage would affect my insurance depending on how often I chose to work from home, so I could take this into consideration when working out my working arrangements for the following year.

The insurance company contacted me about my discrepancies from the comparison sites they found and refused to believe me, I told them to fuck off and cancel my policy with them.

I've always looked at comparison websites and always found cheaper car insurance, usually by at least £50.

Not this year. I've tried every single comparison website and all the tricks recommended by Money saving expert, and the cheapest option is £15 less than staying with my current insurers. Grrr.

Over the last few years, this seems to have become common practice - the current company - whoever they are - just making up some ludicrous increase. I always shop around.

This might affect you in the future. They always ask 'have you had insurance cancelled by a previous insurer?' and obviously you can't say no as they share information/it would be fraud

Sorry, I meant to quote @chupachucks

I change car and house insurance each year and always use top cash back. I usually get about £60 back each year between the both.

I’m going to ring when they open and cancel the auto renewal and shop around. It’s a surprise I guess, admiral have been so reasonable every year I haven’t shopped around.

@amazonamazine - we have just called Admiral too as our auto renewal was a massive jump. Shopping around on comparisons sites didn’t make a difference. In the end called and spoke to Admiral and ended up reducing by £188.00 over a multi car policy all the usual breakdown cover etc included. Definitely worth speaking with them and not letting it auto renew.

They did not cancel it I did 😊

Hopper123 · 22/08/2023 22:33

I wouldn't go with admiral, they wanted to put our insurance up from a grand a year to 3 grand!!! (Multi car) 8 years no claims!! also wouldn't go with direct line they 'forgot' apparently to automatically renew our insurance which we didn't realise until we got a letter from the police giving us a courteous reminder that we needed insurance and they would be rechecking within so many days. We left them straight away after receiving a grovelling apology over the phone. We're with Moji now. When I was younger everyone told me car insurance would get less and less not the case nowadays they're rip off merchants who have people over a barrel as they know we have no choice as legal requirement.

Overdemanding · 22/08/2023 22:37

Mine went up a lot this year too and I couldn't find anything better on the comparison sites either. They're not allowed to offer better deals to new customers than they offer for renewals anymore.

My husband just got his renewal from admiral and it was huge. I think they're just trying their luck.
