At work. The same people every single day buy a plastic bag for their 3 items, moan about the cost of bags, never bring one with them. Always "hehehe I've got loads in the car"
fucking use one then? Obviously can't say that 😂
Each and every time they moan about the price I tell them it's to discourage plastic waste but they just carry on.
Same conversation every day.

AIBU to expect people to bring a bag when they know they're going to a shop?

Probably am, I'm just grouchy cause I just finished a late 🙈

I take bags and/or trolley with me. What pisses me off though, we are discouraged from using plastic bags because we can't be trusted not to throw them in the river, or at least we are made to pay for them to save the planet. Yet the only thing in my recycling is packaging from the shops that don't trust me with a plastic bag

Agree, the amount of plastic on most products these days is ridiculous. Bananas in a plastic bag. Oranges on trays covered in plastic.

Treasureboxkey · 10/05/2023 23:37

Yes. Usually.
And if I don't, I juggle and ram things into my handbag.
I'm damned if I'm buying any more bloody bag for life.

DH on the other hand.... 😡

ODFOx · 10/05/2023 23:40

I build a store of plastic bags aNd then use them at the food bank. We did, for a while, hand out parcels in cotton bags and ask people to stick them in the donations bin at the local coop. Not one came back.

So at least they do get reused 🙂

pickd · 10/05/2023 23:45

I do forgot and leave them in the boot of the car. I'm autistic and when I'm going shopping I'm focused on getting there so when I've parked the car I'm so focused thinking about whether I'll need a trolley etc that I just forget to walk to the back of the car and look in the boot for bags.
I reverse in so I'm never passing the boot on my way if you see what I mean.
I also worked retail for 15 years and remember the outcry when we first started charging for plastic bags. I've had those conversations a million times over with customers but I still forget them myself so I don't judge. So yes YABU but I do understand why it bugs you.

pickd · 10/05/2023 23:46

*forget, not forgot

This pisses me off too. I like to buy loose fruit and veg. Still see people picking up loose veg and putting it in a bloody single use plastic bag though. What's the point! I wish the shop would switch to paper or compostable bags.

I think retailers should go the way of the co-op. But have a lower charge.

The bags are compostible and can be used in your food bin. And if you don't use them for that then at least they break down.

When you're buying liners for the food bin anyway, at least retailers still get to put their brand on it and get that advertising they used to

Moraxella · 10/05/2023 23:54

There’s a massive bank inside our local supermarket to put your old plastic bags in for recycling. It’s usually full and overflowing- and east to grab a bag from on the way in in case you’ve forgotten your own 🤫

ThinWomansBrain · 11/05/2023 00:04

don't all councils provide compostable food bags?
I pick mine up from the library.

That said, I reuse any decent size packaging bags instead of bin liners, and probably end up having to buy a carrier bag less than once a year.

DannyZukosSmile · 11/05/2023 00:07

I would be with you @Irritatedcashier but think YABU because in 2023, it's about time supermarkets started providing paper bags - for free. Why are you still giving out PLASTIC BAGS? You have to take some responsibility!

Promisedmeamiracle · 11/05/2023 00:11

Why are you still giving out PLASTIC BAGS? You have to take some responsibility!

Can you imagine the grief staff would get when the customers overfill their paper bag and it rips? Their glass jars will smash in the floor -causing wastage, not to mention extra work of cleaning-they will get a free replacement causing loss to store. It just wouldn’t be worth it and staff like poor op would be shouted at by angry customers.

Well ya no, I'm the bottom feeder of the company, I don't get a say in what we sell or buy🤷🏻‍♀️😂 I'm not responsible......

Always getting shouted at.

The other day it was my fault their card got declined.

Before that it was my fault the price of yogurt had gone up.

My fault we didn't close for the coronation.

I'll not bore you with the rest 😂

Agree with this.

Sure I read that when the charge came in the sale of bin liners went up.

Also packaging on some things elongates their life. There’s too much food waste as there is.

Compostable bags, easily recycled packaging is the way forward.

SmallGreatThings1 · 11/05/2023 00:35

Lots of shops do use paper bags now which is great. Why are they charging for those now though?

BarbaraofSeville · 11/05/2023 06:40

Paper bags aren't without their own issues, it takes a lot of energy to make or recycle paper, so they shouldn't be regarded as single use either. People forget that they should be reusing before recycling, whatever the bag is made of.

I did see a sign in the car park in Sainsburys the other day telling people not to forget their bags, which would help those who keep them in the car.

People need to try harder with this and build it into their routine. I bet just about everyone shopping in a supermarket has remembered to pick their phone up when they left the house, so they should treat shopping bags with the same level of importance.

Not all local authorities have food bin waste. Mine doesn’t.

SquirrelFan · 11/05/2023 06:55

@Sloelydoesit Ha! Our council doesn't pick up food waste anymore, and never provided bags. And our library has such reduced opening times, I can't get there due to working hours for books, much less any kind of council incentives...

Beezknees · 11/05/2023 07:00

I brought a bag with me and used it at the self service, the bloke working there didn't believe me when I said I'd brought it from home, he basically was accusing me of stealing it! Kept asking me "have you paid for it" and "are you sure" when I said I'd brought it with me!

Divorcedalongtime · 11/05/2023 07:01

The bags!!! So pointless when still so much in the shop is wrapped in plastic.

LakieLady · 11/05/2023 07:06

I've got some nylon shopping bags that fold up very small and fit in their own little pouch. I keep at least 4 in my handbag, so I always have them on me if I'm shopping. I think most of the supermarkets do them.

They were cheap as chips, approx £1 apiece, and must have saved me a small fortune in bags for life.

sandgrown · 11/05/2023 07:07

I hear you OP . The other thing that annoys me is when people complain about the increase in the price of products then buy 6 bags . The price of bags would buy them another food item.

Daffodilwoman · 11/05/2023 07:10

I know this isn’t the point if the thread but…..My favourite bags are the ones from Poundland- cost a pound!
I have to really rein it in at Christmas and stop myself buying a new one each year.
