At work. The same people every single day buy a plastic bag for their 3 items, moan about the cost of bags, never bring one with them. Always "hehehe I've got loads in the car"
fucking use one then? Obviously can't say that 😂
Each and every time they moan about the price I tell them it's to discourage plastic waste but they just carry on.
Same conversation every day.

AIBU to expect people to bring a bag when they know they're going to a shop?

Probably am, I'm just grouchy cause I just finished a late 🙈

YABU to not know that some people are just like this - humans can be self-defeating moaners at times. Just nod and ignore.

There’s a massive bank inside our local supermarket to put your old plastic bags in for recycling. It’s usually full and overflowing- and east to grab a bag from on the way in in case you’ve forgotten your own 🤫

I wouldn't put food in a bag that you don't know where it has been, what it's had in it. It never occurred to me people would take bags out of those bins! I've put bags in there that I've used over & over for all kinds of things, assuming they would be taken away & recycled.

Sloelydoesit · 10/05/2023 23:50

I think retailers should go the way of the co-op. But have a lower charge.

The bags are compostible and can be used in your food bin. And if you don't use them for that then at least they break down.

When you're buying liners for the food bin anyway, at least retailers still get to put their brand on it and get that advertising they used to

I disagree. We need to limit production, not switch to a different type of production. These compostable bags use plenty of oil and energy in their production.

It would be better not to use bags for food waste at all, can the caddy not be tipped into the food waste bin?

I would be with you @Irritatedcashier but think YABU because in 2023, it's about time supermarkets started providing paper bags - for free. Why are you still giving out PLASTIC BAGS? You have to take some responsibility!

This may come as a surprise to you, but the OP is not responsible for her employer's policies.

I do forgot and leave them in the boot of the car. I'm autistic and when I'm going shopping I'm focused on getting there so when I've parked the car I'm so focused thinking about whether I'll need a trolley etc that I just forget to walk to the back of the car and look in the boot for bags.
I reverse in so I'm never passing the boot on my way if you see what I mean.
I also worked retail for 15 years and remember the outcry when we first started charging for plastic bags. I've had those conversations a million times over with customers but I still forget them myself so I don't judge. So yes YABU but I do understand why it bugs you.

If it helps, I don’t think this experience is unique to people with autism. I find that storing the bags for life near the back door and putting one in my handbag before leaving the house works better than keeping them in the boot.

whatkatydid2013 · 11/05/2023 07:23

YANBU. I leave mine in the car sometimes but then I just pack the stuff back in the trolley and sort into bags at the car. Using the handheld scanners helps if you forget frequently as you’ll realise you forgot the bags right at the start and can just pop back for them

Agree, the amount of plastic on most products these days is ridiculous. Bananas in a plastic bag. Oranges on trays covered in plastic.

Absolutely! Have to drink with straw which taste like it looks and melts, but nooo. Cannot have unwrapped sold per weight veg🙄
When my parents first visited me they were quite schocked at amount of rubbish simple supermarket shop produced.

Schroedingersimmigrant · 11/05/2023 07:26

Irritatedcashier · 10/05/2023 23:47

This pisses me off too. I like to buy loose fruit and veg. Still see people picking up loose veg and putting it in a bloody single use plastic bag though. What's the point! I wish the shop would switch to paper or compostable bags.

These are not songle use😁
We inherited a bag of bags when grandma died. They get proper usage in our house.

Nonetheless, most shops should have paper or compostable today.

I feel the need to share this sketch (NSFW as i think they swear, but it had my howling laughing)

And yes, ideally we should all be taking bags, especially if forgetting is a daily occurence!

A few signs in the car park would help.

when someone says would you like a bag, you almost have to laugh it off and say I forgot to bring one -what else would you like the person to say? If they just say “yes” you’ll think that were rude

between finding a space, paying for a ticket, wrangling kids etc people forget things, you need to chill

mainsfed · 11/05/2023 07:29

😂

I can’t remember the last time I forgot my bags for life in my car. Bags are now 30p at least so I always remember, and if not, I’d go back to get them.

Paper bags aren't without their own issues, it takes a lot of energy to make or recycle paper, so they shouldn't be regarded as single use either. People forget that they should be reusing before recycling, whatever the bag is made of.

I did see a sign in the car park in Sainsburys the other day telling people not to forget their bags, which would help those who keep them in the car.

People need to try harder with this and build it into their routine. I bet just about everyone shopping in a supermarket has remembered to pick their phone up when they left the house, so they should treat shopping bags with the same level of importance.

You beat me to it @BarbaraofSeville, but if anyone wants more info, here is a great article about paper vs plastic bags.

If you use a paper bag once vs a single use plastic bag, it's actually less environmentally friendly - due to manufacture and shipping being more energy-heavy. And I'd say people are hugely less likely to reuse a paper bags 3 times, even if they really want to (it only has to get wet once to be useless!).

Paper bag

Plastic or paper: Which bag is greener?

Morrisons will introduce paper bags, so are they better for the environment?

The Morrisons paper bags last ages. Although not sure how they’d hold up in constant rain.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 11/05/2023 07:32

I was carrying a paper bag of shopping home in the rain once. The bag started disintegrating.

Luckily I was almost home when it finally fell apart.

Noseylittlemoo · 11/05/2023 07:33

@Irritatedcashier I am another irritated cashier! I work in a shop - not a supermarket - and we are able to give out our bags because they are paper/cardboard. But I still get annoyed when people ask for excessive amounts- often it is because they begrudge paying for a bag so come in arms full of stuff from other stores. They often say do you know I spent £££ and they still want to charge me for a bag?! Like their wealth cancels out the environmental issue. Or they want the bag to show off that they've bought something from our shop. If someone buys a lip balm or similar I just hand it over and it really bugs me if they ask for a bag!
Paying for a bag must have been a thing for about 10 years now so I don't know why people are still surprised/unprepared!

mainsfed · 11/05/2023 07:37

The worst are the bag thieves. When I’m queuing at the self-check out tills I see so many many people sneaking a bag and not scanning it.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 11/05/2023 07:38

My local council do kerbside recycling for small electrical items and textiles, but insist on them being in plastic bags.

I asked for a plastic bag in my local Waterstones for this reason and the man behind the counter started telling me off, so I explained this to him in long and (hopefully boring) detail. (There was nobody queuing at the time.)

Ihaveshitfriends · 11/05/2023 07:46

I get loads of plastic bag as partner always but have found out my local food bank loves them so we donate food and bags monthly.

MamaDollyorJesus · 11/05/2023 07:47

Daffodilwoman · 11/05/2023 07:10

I know this isn’t the point if the thread but…..My favourite bags are the ones from Poundland- cost a pound!
I have to really rein it in at Christmas and stop myself buying a new one each year.

I have a special set of Christmas bags & buy a new one every year. My favourite are the old jute type ones from Tesco but you can only seem to get the plasticky ones now. I've had some for years & they come out mid-November.

I have lots of non-Christmas bags too & if I ever forget to take a bag or pop into a shop when I hadn't planned to I buy a new shopping bag to add to my collection never a bag for life because they're shit & I wouldn't re-use them but that's extremely rare that I don't have bags in the car or a couple of the folded up ones in my bag.

As for the co-op bags they're all well & good but they're shit if you want to buy more than a loaf of bread as they're too small & too flimsy.

Our LA provided the food waste bags when it was first introduced but stopped after about 6 months citing supply issues as the reason but that was at least 10 years ago and they seem to be having the same supply issues today 🤔

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 11/05/2023 07:47

I agree that it seems strange for the government to fixate on supermarket carrier bags and drinking straws, but then ignore bananas in plastic, supermarkets using food pallets wrapped tightly in plastic, instead of using metal cages multiple times, disposable coffee cups.... so many things.

Asda went through a period where they made their bags for life so very thin (didn't reduce the price, mind), that they were effectively single-use bags again, as you would be lucky if they survived the journey home. I've never trusted the paper bags from Morrisons - I don't mind the ones in Boots, where you're buying a couple of light packets or a bottle or two, but our supermarket shopping tends to have heavy bottles, cans, root veg and similar in it.

I get that the bags - whether plastic or paper - use resources to provide, but so does everything else in the shop and in a consumer society. That's just how life is - we can try our best, but the only way to properly get rid of human-caused pollution is to get rid of the humans.

One thing that bugs me is when things are proclaimed as recyclable, but then there are never any facilities or encouragement to actually recycle them.

Or just roll the trolley to the car and pack there.

I've got one of those plastic nylon folding bags that I keep in my handbag. Really useful.
This one is from London Transport, but Waitrose so a great one for about a fiver.

Eh? If somebody asks me if I want a bag, I just say “yes please” and say “thank you” when they give it to me. Not rude, and no need to laugh or give excuses, which is wholly unnecessary.

Wow, they've shot up in price! They were only £1 or £2 when I got mine. I've had mine ages though, they appear to be indestructible.

M&S do them too, they squish into a little cone shaped drawstring pouch, which I find strangely satisfying, for some reason.
