To want dc sat at on a proper chair for their sats.

Dc tells me this morning that she is sat at these tables for her SATS. The children are spaced out around the hall on various set ups, and I get that it's hard fitting everyone in, but surely this is unacceptable?

Uncomfortable and really not suitable for sitting for hours doing tests.

You don’t sit for hours. Most tests are around 45 minutes; the longest is around an hour. There are no issues here.

cushioncovers · 10/05/2023 07:43

I agree. Even as an adult I hate these sort of chairs. You can't have a one size fits all.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 10/05/2023 07:44

YANBU, they should have proper back support.

That looks so uncomfortable.

She's 5'4 too, so is likely leaving over more as the height isn't the same as a proper school desk and chair.

I'm short and often the adult version of these mean I can't reach the table comfortably.

Parker231 · 10/05/2023 07:54

They don’t sit for hours - it’s a SATS not their final degree exam.
Where do you think the school should sit everyone - they probably don’t have any other option.

Needmorelego · 10/05/2023 07:56

She's very tall for an 11 year old !
Maybe just speak to the school. They might be able to bring in a regular table and chair for her (they would need to if a child used a wheelchair).

Takoneko · 10/05/2023 08:00

I have to say that looks really uncomfortable to me for writing. So I don’t think you’re being excessively precious.

I teach secondary and whilst lots of our tiny year 7s would be ok with that a lot of them come into secondary already much taller than me and I wouldn’t want to sit and work at a table like that for an hour. We have some in our Key Stage 3 dining hall and they are ok for the 15-20 mins most kids spend eating lunch, but you wouldn’t want to sit in them longer than that. We’d never put exams in there without packing away the tables and putting in exam desks.

I get that exam desks are probably too expensive and tricky to store for primary schools who wouldn’t get enough use out of them to justify it. I’d wrongly assumed that children just did SATs at their desks in classrooms. I’m sure that’s how I did mine at that age.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/05/2023 08:01

Yes she is tall for her age, always has been.

I appreciate these aren't finals, not sure the snippiness was called for, and I acknowledge in my op that I get that this is a logistical challenge for the school.

But they have 30 proper chairs in the classroom, of which only some are being used in the exams.

And I know she isn't sat for multiple hours in a row, but it doesn't change ge the fact that these are the most formal tests they have sat so far, and the majority of the class are at appropriate desks and chairs. And she is not and is uncomfortable and, imo, it's inappropriate for an exam setting.

That seating is awful

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/05/2023 08:05

I'll nip in and speak to her teacher when I drop off and hope he can sort out something - even just a proper backed chair on the end of one of these desks.

A perfect set up for copying! - sounds good to me - a chance to thumb their noses at the pointless SATs!!

takeabrolly · 10/05/2023 08:06

For God's sake get a grip woman. She'll be sitting on it for less than an hour. The school is using these tables because they have no other way of meeting the ridiculous SATS requirements in a primary school.

There’s usually dividers between the students - don’t be so dense ffs.

They have multiple tests a day.
The majority of the children are sat at suitable desks and on suitable chairs. Therefore there is the capacity they've just decided to put an adult sized girl on one. Bearing in mind these tables are used right from Nursery age.

She has said she is uncomfortable in the seat. Why shouldn't I seek to get her somewhere more appropriate to sit?

OP posts:
Needmorelego · 10/05/2023 08:13

If some children are using the regular desks they should be fine with her having swap places.
They probably had some logic about where the kids are sat (alphabetically/friends away from friends?) and didn't deliberately put the tallest child at the lunch desk.
I'm am sure they will move her.

BrendaMcPherson · 10/05/2023 08:18

YANBU at all! I remember joining with another school on an INSET day and we were expected to sit at those tables for the morning session. I lasted 5 minutes then asked for a proper chair. So what if the tests are only 45 minutes long? When you're uncomfortable, 45 minutes is a very long time!

Dividers? - in those tiny spaces - I think not. Your post is very rude - have you had a bad night?

Rude much?

It's not OP or her DDs fault the SATS requirements are ridiculous.

My DD is currently doing them and they're in their normal classroom.

45 minutes when you're meant to be concentrating, and the kids feel like SATs are WAY important, is a very long time to be uncomfortable. She won't be performing at her best, and she has every right to have the same opportunity to perform at her best, in the same way her cohort at their usual desk style do

Why should her DD have to sit and in an uncomfortable for ten minutes, let alone for several hours throughout the day.

tikkanaan · 10/05/2023 08:44

I don't get why they don't use their proper chairs

Just ask

FlamingoQueen · 10/05/2023 08:51

Why can’t they sit on their own tables and chairs in the classroom? The table pictured has seats very close together so it’s not as if they’re worried about copying etc.

Needmorelego · 10/05/2023 09:09

@FlamingoQueen because a typical classroom has tables for 2 children. Sounds like half the children are in the classroom (1 child per table), half in the hall on the lunch tables.
