To want dc sat at on a proper chair for their sats.

Dc tells me this morning that she is sat at these tables for her SATS. The children are spaced out around the hall on various set ups, and I get that it's hard fitting everyone in, but surely this is unacceptable?

Uncomfortable and really not suitable for sitting for hours doing tests.

To want dc sat at on a proper chair for their sats.

I agree. I also think kids should have proper cutlery and plates for school dinners, and proper chairs with a back, as we used to, not plastic prison slop trays and uncomfortable stool type seats. Things have gone backwards.

wwyd2021medicine · 10/05/2023 09:20

I came on here expecting to see some sort of rocker chair. DD saw them in a local school - I've no idea what they are called - and basically the child has to have feet on the floor and sit upright to keep the chair stable. It's meant to keep them alert in lessons

LittleOwl153 · 10/05/2023 09:28

The fact that SHE says she's uncomfortable - but presumably doesn't feel she can speak to the teacher herself about it or has and has got nowhere means that I would be strongly requesting a change in seat for her. I get that these things are makeshift for the week but that doesn't mean common sense and general health and safety go out of the window. Hope you got it sorted for her @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

She's 5'4 too, so is likely leaving over more as the height isn't the same as a proper school desk and chair.

I'm 5'3 and sat at one of these for an hour long talk at my kids school.

My back and hips were aching and my arse was numb afterwards. My legs had to go outwards rather than sit at a 90° angle.

I'd definitely be discussing this. Aren't SATS somewhere like 9 hours in total over the course of the week. Add in lunch, and that's a long time in an uncomfortable position.

Tbf dd would absolutely love this! It would probably satisfy any fidget needs.

I dropped her off about an hour ago and managed to catch her teacher. He is going to sort a proper chair for her from today. Didn't seem put out or even confused as to why I would raise this, so it's possible he has had other parents mention it / raise it in the past.

Dividers? - in those tiny spaces - I think not. Your post is very rude - have you had a bad night?

No I slept really well thanks. Just don’t like it when people make up imaginary issues 👍

I’m 23 and when I did my SATs it was at the exact same table, in the dining hall, and we had dividers. Not sure why you think it’s oh so impossible. Because it is. Hope you can now stop imagining issues that are not there.

You have just written my thoughts. The whole education system has gone backwards.

The school could probably afford these, but have wasted money on frivolous things like heating, lights, teachers etc.

She's very tall for an 11 year old !
Maybe just speak to the school. They might be able to bring in a regular table and chair for her (they would need to if a child used a wheelchair).

Not necessarily tall, I was the same height leaving primary school I just didn’t get any taller from there on in!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/05/2023 09:57

She isn't even the tallest girl in her class, and there are at least two boys taller than her. They tower over a couple of the teachers.

He's probably thinking "I've been teaching this child for the past year, I'm aware she's tall, does her mother not think I've already thought about this?"

@Mischance they don't all sit next to one another, hence why some kids are in the classroom and some in dining room.

JustanothermagicMonday1 · 10/05/2023 09:58

Same in our school OP. In the school hall, also used for lunches.

tiredhadenough · 10/05/2023 10:00

@Mischance I would presume that they are using these to create space (so add more tables). I wouldn't think every seat would be occupied and some children will be at their usual table? It's a way to spread them out rather than the opposite.

JustanothermagicMonday1 · 10/05/2023 10:04

The thing is in our school the rest of the classes surround the school hall and all kids in the whole school have been told to keep quiet so the Year 6 can do their Sats. When they are done the lunch time staff have to come in quickly and take over efficiently.

Personally I wouldn’t kick up a fuss because in our school the whole school community is stressed about the Sats and being quiet for the Year 6s. And this set up has been used for years and the school does really well with Sats, including a big percentage of kids at greater depth.

I think if you kick up a fuss about the chairs you may become that parent.

Needmorelego · 10/05/2023 10:05

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz is there something in the water where you live that makes them all so tall 😂
What's funny is come September and they start secondary they will suddenly look so tiny again.
I swear some children (especially the boys) shrink a bit in the summer between Year 6 and 7 😂

Famzonhol · 10/05/2023 10:06

Dear dear. How awful.
How dare the school expect a healthy 11 year old to sit in a slightly uncomfortable chair for a short part of the day.
It’s no wonder the world is going backwards.

Honestly there is such a range! A couple of the children are shorter than the year 3 students too, so it's such a mix.

Why though? When there is alternative seating? Why should she be given this stool to sit at for exams?

My son is about the same height as your daughter and there's quite a few of them hovering around the tall end of things, but then some titchy ones as well. There must be nearly a foot in the range of heights!

With all the preparation and over-production of SATS (the rest of the school keeping quiet, taking over lots of shared spaces for the week, extra homework for months on end and loads of learning time given over to SATS prep) it feels totally daft and counterproductive to then put kids in situations where they are may not perform at their best because they're very uncomfortable/not in a good position for writing/etc.

A lot of people, some teachers included, expect kids to be plasticine and adapt 100% to any environment. It's quite interesting.

You're aware that it's OP's daughter, not OP, who is sitting an exam in test conditions, right?

The poster was correcting grammar. You aren’t ‘sat’ for hours unless someone had physically placed you there, bodily, you are in fact ‘sitting’.
