Car insurance for new driver

PocketMoneyQuandry · 09/05/2023 19:15

Apologies for the AIBU, I posted elsewhere but have had no responses.

Son takes his test tomorrow. He's 17.

Just asked our insurance to add him as a driver on our policy (9 year old and uncool car 🤣) and they want £6080 hahahaha.

We did check that they'd not added an extra 0!

Can you recommend a company?

Thanks

Go on a price comparison site.

wizbit93 · 09/05/2023 19:28

DS is with Tesco (has a black box). Was around £900 with DH and I as named drivers. He has a 2009 peugout.

JimiChoux · 09/05/2023 19:30

The price quoted may have been as a learner driver as he actually hasn't passed yet.

HisNibs · 09/05/2023 19:54

I know when my son passed his test, adding him on as a named driver would have added nearly £3K so we got him his own car and black box policy. Much cheaper. Daft as it sounds Op, try getting a quote for your son to have his own policy on your car. It is allowed and will enable him to build some no claims bonus.

PinkiOcelot · 09/05/2023 19:57

When dd2 passed her test at 17 we found Privilege to be the cheapest. It was just over £900 with no black box. 05 Toyota Yaris.

Woopzies · 09/05/2023 20:00

Collingwood Temporary Learner Driver insurance.

Lochjeda · 09/05/2023 20:01

Marmalade

Woopzies · 09/05/2023 20:02

^ Sorry, clicked too soon. That is, assuming you need learner driver insurance just for the test.

Thereafter, I'd have a look at Direct Line, etc. who aren't on the normal comparison sites.

Stepbystep100 · 09/05/2023 20:04

My son went with Admiral for the first year which he picked from a comparison site.

Smoky1107 · 09/05/2023 20:12

My daughters is with marmalade, she has her own policy on my car and it has a black box that tracks her driving but not mine

Blarn · 09/05/2023 20:15

Black boxes do reduce it. I passed at 37 and drive a small, five year old Skoda. I am paying just shy of £800. Various cars I looked at ranged from £600-£800 but a black box took £100 off all those quotes. Adding dh lowered it as well.

WheelsUp · 09/05/2023 20:16

Black box policies are usually cheapest but they need their own car which is a problem.

SapplingOverWater · 09/05/2023 20:26

Comparison sites Compare The Market and Moneysupermarket. Your son is an unknown risk so depending on your car £1k is not a surprise, they usually have a higher excess too. £6k is ridiculous, they don't want your business.

Desmondo2021 · 09/05/2023 20:30

If it's just for the test then use veygo. Will cost you about £6 for the two hours!

No, it was as a newly passed driver.

Collingwood Temporary Learner Driver insurance.

We used these for learner insurance (recommended here). This is for when he passes.

I’d be shocked if you get anything cheaper than that!

As476 · 09/05/2023 20:44

What size engine is the car? If it’s anything higher than a 1.2L it will be expensive for a teenage boy. I have a 2009 1.2L small car, and it cost me £900 for my first years insurance, no black box, 2 named drivers, with Hastings direct.

WhatTheHeckIsIt · 09/05/2023 20:46

When you use the comparison get fully comprehensive quotes too. For my child fully comp was cheaper, which wasn’t what we were expecting. The engine size is what’s important. I was told that if the car is too much of a banger they make it more expensive because the new driver is more likely to take care of a pricier vehicle - no idea if that’s true or just speculation.

Good luck - it’s a minefield!

Hahaha. They're probably right.

Hastings won't insure U18

What car and engine size is it?

UncomfortableSilence · 09/05/2023 20:59

We used Adrian Flux for DD, black box policy was £1200. They came out cheapest on comparison sites, I called them to check something and got the price down a bit more. We both have an app and we can see how she has been driving, we're happy with them.

Be careful adding them to your own policy as a named driver if they would be a main user as this is called fronting and is illegal, insurance companies are really on top of this with young drivers.

They insured me at 17 back in the 2010s I’d double check
