Car insurance for new driver

Apologies for the AIBU, I posted elsewhere but have had no responses.

Son takes his test tomorrow. He's 17.

Just asked our insurance to add him as a driver on our policy (9 year old and uncool car 🤣) and they want £6080 hahahaha.

We did check that they'd not added an extra 0!

Can you recommend a company?

Thanks

Christ, I just did a quote for my DD17 and it also came back at £6,000!! Her learner insurance was only £250 on my car…

Will have to purchase an old banger I think…

Hastings wouldn't insure my 18 year old as a named driver on my policy either. She passed 3 weeks ago. I'm surprised Marmalade is so expensive as our cars only a year old and it was 215 deposit then 10 times 115. What size engine is the car? That might be the issue.

Lochjeda · 09/05/2023 21:18

Might work out cheaper buying a small 1.2 litre run around and then getting insured on it with a black box. The insurance will likely still be more expensive than the cost of the car but they need to cover their own costs incase there's a crash in to a more expensive car.

Thanks all. It's a 9yo 1.6 small car. Nothing special but it's always done us well. I'm assuming it's the engine size, then.

It'll 100% be us as the main drivers. He will have occasional use until he's 18 and can buy himself a car.

I've added my son to my own insurance with Admiral. He's 19 and passed his test 6 months ago. I've paid £340 for 4.5 months (that's what's left until renewal)

The price quoted may have been as a learner driver as he actually hasn't passed yet.

It's cheaper to insure a learner than a new driver; when they are learning they have a qualified driver with them. When they pass they're on their own (or worse, with a car full of other 17 year olds). And an old banger isn't necessarily cheaper as they can do a lot of damage to someone's expensive car with it. Ideally they need a 1.2 engine or smaller, and I agree about the comparison web sites. I paid £900 with a black box for DS as policy holder and me and DH as named drivers. He has, however had a (minor) accident, so renewing it this year will be interesting!

They don't necessarily need their own car to get a black box. We insured DD as a named driver on my car but with a black box through direct line. It was a nuisance for me because they judged my driving too 😂 She got her own car after that and I don't think she needed a physical black box by that stage, there was just an app that she had to have running while she was driving. Tiny little car but was only £600 with her as main driver which was the same as when she was a named driver on my policy

Admiral have been fab for us too (multi-car policy) currently paying £300 for ds's vw polo (he's yet to pass) and just under £400 for dd's golf (she's 24 now but to insure her polo when she passed in 2017 was just under £800) no black boxes and fully comp btw

@PocketMoneyQuandry good luck for your sons test today. I hope it goes well.

NamelessNancy · 10/05/2023 07:39

If he's only going to be using the car occasionally I'd look at using veygo temporary insurance when he needs it. A faff but if it's not used super frequently could be a lot cheaper.

900 a year? For a new driver?
