The People demand that the Boats are Stopped.

I keep reading about the Tory government working hard to deliver the people's priorities:

"Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Government are focused on five immediate priorities. We will halve inflation, grow the economy, reduce debt, cut NHS waiting lists and stop the boats."

Halve inflation (will happen anyway), grow the economy (vague), reduce debt (vague), cut NHS waiting lists (maybe by paying nurses and doctors more?), stop the boats (what?).

Maybe it's just where I live, but I'm not seeing this immediate urgent need to "stop the boats". It's certainly nowhere near my top 5 priorities for the government to be immediately tackling. If it was, I'd probably look at creating legal routes for genuine asylum seekers as a first step rather than shipping them to Rwanda.

Is it in your top 5 urgent government priorities? Are they speaking to the people and I've just completely missed it?

YABU: Stopping the boats is in my top 5 government priorities.
YANBU: I'm more concerned about something else and would bump Stop the Boats down the list.

But there ARE legal routes and just because only 1 person has ever accessed the scheme shouldn't mean anything! It's a mystery why they keep coming on dangerous boats. Confused

You're wrong. There not legal routes for those from 99% of countries

So these applicants from Hong Kong won't require houses or schools or put any sort of pressure on the infrastructure, because they aren't low income families?

I was pointing out that Labour's Shadow Minister for Immigration wants to put more pressure on infrastructure by inviting low income families from Hong Kong. Personally, I have no problem with middle class immigration.

I understand the people traffickers can charge thousands per person to cross the Channel, so those families also have to have money

The Hong Kong applicants are paying for their own accommodation.

Is that you, Rishi? Is this a parody account? You have no problem with middle class immigration? Dear lord.
But who's going to clean the middle class houses and nanny the middle class children?
Heaven forbid the working classes should take up any space.

Lots of things are more important: health, social care, education, general cost of living. I can't stand that expression 'THE people' anyway; suggests that everyone must think the same, and dissent must be crushed,

beguilingeyes · 11/05/2023 05:54

It's like when they say 'our' NHS. Sets my teeth on edge.

Where do you live? Are you wealthy? If you don’t live in the SE and have some cash then I can see why you don’t have to care about it

Why do you care about it?

I'm quite suprised at 40% voting that stopping the boats is in their top 5 priorities. I really need to remember that they walk among us.

40% racist Tory voters. Sad but true.

6strings1song · 09/05/2023 13:16

I saw a clip on the news where Sunak was talking about the list of priorities. When he mentioned stopping the boats, both me and DH rolled our eyes. It is just a populist policy which appeals to the previously UKIP supporting section of new tory voters.

The teacher retention crisis and care crisis surely rank much higher than "stopping the boats".

Exactly!!
Maybe we could GET some boats for the UKIP voters & send them in the other direction?

RatatouilleAndFeta · 11/05/2023 06:26

Are there many refugees and asylum seekers in the UK? No. According to UNHCR statistics, as of November 2022 there were 231,597 refugees, 127,421 pending asylum cases and 5,483 stateless persons in the UK including recent Ukrainians refugees. That's only half a per cent (0.54%) of the UK's total population.

EDUCATION, HOSPITALS & SOCIAL CARE ARE WAY MORE IMPORTANT. PLEASE STOP VOTING TORY BECAUSE OF SOME MISGUIDED NOTION THAT WE ARE BEING INVADED!!!!

CurlewKate · 11/05/2023 06:34

Well, the people of Dover obviously don't think it's a priority!

peonyoalace · 11/05/2023 06:59

@RatatouilleAndFeta nobody knows how many are here. Supermarket data and water companies data suggests the population of the U.K. is much higher than is recorded.

The people coming in on boats often try to avoid the authorities. There have been press articles on them escaping into the night, coming into local peoples homes and demanding to use the phone because they need to get somewhere and are avoiding the police, hiding in peoples front gardens, bins full of passports where people are better off without ID because they're not actually eligible for asylum.

When the authorities have been called they try to deny this happens or simply don't care.

You do realize that that it’s this attitude that led to Brexit. Calling anyone that cares about immigration racist. Keep going. You do a stellar job in shooting your own cause in the foot.

Yes because someone has been around the country all of them including the ones that no one knows about, living and working in the underground economy. The naïveté is staggering.

@Swrigh1234 👏👏👏 the naivety is breathtaking !!

L1ttledrummergirl · 11/05/2023 07:59

@JustLollopingAlong why? Can you elaborate on your personal experiences to make us understand. There are a lot of people saying things like "everyone in town knows what it's like", but so far few personal experiences. One person said they were chased down the road, but didn't follow up when asked about things like police action when they reported it.

I would love to understand the nitty-gritty of what is happening in these places, bit so far it's very much friend of a friend of a friend.

What has been your experience that is so bad, it will make me want to dehumanised people and send them on a plane to Rwanda?

Ladykryptonite · 11/05/2023 08:05

Justlollopong, what happens near you?

If we’re talking about experiences, a dear friend just suffered a homophobic hate crime during Eid. It’s been reported to the police.

I presume these threads are created as a means to try and persuade people not to vote Tory. And it brings out the vitriol from the people, like you, who despise the working class brexit voter, but your only tools available are to throw abuse at them. So people who don't agree with mass uncontrolled immigration for valid reasons, don't bother to post on these echo chamber threads. Or if they do, they don't stay long. But they still vote. And for some reasons the brexit / working class haters are surprised at the result of those votes. Really, if anyone should be ashamed of themselves, it's people like you.

DelphiniumsBlueWildRose · 11/05/2023 08:26

I live in a very multicultural city. There are around 40 different languages spoken in my children's school.

They have friends who's families are from Romania, Greece, Turkey, Portugal, Brasil, Poland, Bulgaria, Jamaica, Ghana, Australia, Ireland all over. They are kids. They understand that people are people & it doesn't matter where they come from.

Shame the same can't be said about a lot of adults in this country.*
