Dogs everywhere?

I realise this topic is divisive and am prepared to be told I’m being VU - but is it me or are dogs showing up in cafes and shops more frequently than ever before? I was in Selfridges Manchester over the weekend and people were walking around the store with large dogs, not your usual fit in a handbag breeds but the types you see prancing around on Crufts.

When did businesses relax their bans on them? I understand if it’s a guide dog or therapy dog you can’t deny them entry, I don’t feel comfortable walking around a store or eating in a cafe where dogs are present, any one else? Should I complain to Selfridges?

My dogs can’t possibly be left home alone so you can enjoy a meal out without being pestered by them. They’re very friendly and only want to say hello, I love them and DEMAND you love them as much as I do!

I think it is great as long as clean and well behaved.

Don’t worry, if I really don’t want to see your dogs I’ll go to one of the many dog free restaurants there are about. No big deal.

happypoobum · 09/05/2023 21:07

My friend has a beagle named Smokey.

I see dogs in most clothing shops these days. Can’t see a problem with it. If you’re that allergic to dogs you would be reacting to the hair/dander carried around on owner’s clothing surely?

I guess it touches a nerve for those dog owners parading their mutts around shops and cafes. Perhaps there’s so many threads about it because it annoys those who dislike dogs / are allergic to them.

to your initial post YANBU . I was in America last year and was pleasantly surprised to see quite a few brunch places with “dogs not allowed” signs on it and signs near grassy areas saying dogs mustn’t be on it. I NEVER see that here. Afaik every cafe in my town welcomes dogs, there’s no escape from them unless I stay at home. I seen one in the library recently too. Absolutely ridiculous.

Genuine question do you or anyone know of any dog free restaurants (national chains or ones in London) ? I was in Bills recently and assumed it was dog free then an agitated barking dog entered. The owners eventually left to put it back in their house /car (?) once they realised it wouldn’t settle, but it made me realise a lot of places I assume are safely not dog friendly might actually be dog friendly. It’s like when I was younger I assumed dogs weren’t allowed on trains because I’d never see them but now I actively check a carriage for dogs when I step on (if I remember)

I'm with you OP, however all the obsessively weird dog lovers will tell you you're being unreasonable or make snide comments over the amount of these threads, complete with eye roll or yawning emojis, because they're so edgy and cool.

I was on a bus on Sunday and someone got on with a dog.
I hate dogs, always have, always will, and it was just stood in the middle of the aisle meaning I had to squeeze past it to get off whilst trying to not allow it to sniff at me etc.

It also stank, as all dogs do, as much as their owners protest otherwise.
I wish dogs weren't allowed as pets, they're a nuisance.

(Awaiting all the comments comparing dogs and kids to each other.)

I hate that. It must be especially terrible for those with visual and or mobility problems when dogs are in the middle of the aisle like that. I don’t drive but I’m learning and one motivation is to not be forced to be on a bus or train with a dog.

Dogs smell to me as well! I just don’t like to be in close proximity to them but understand why others love them and have them as pets. I have nothing against dogs and abhor animal cruelty but It’s just a significant amount of dog owners insist on imposing them on us all.

I was in a cafe a few months ago and an off leash dog kept coming out from under the table towards me when I tried to enter. I immediately retreated but the staff saw and said they’d walk near me to go in between the dog. But it’s ridiculous the owner wasn’t required to keep it on a leash.

To be honest you're a bit unreasonable , the whole point in taking young dogs to different places such as the Library and cafes is to train them into being more people friendly, and to behave reasonably well when in the company or around strange people . If you want more anti-social dogs with more people problems go ahead ban dogs from everywhere ,but don't come crying to us when there is a whole generation of nutcase anti-social dogs around .

YABU as this is word for word almost exact same as thread that pops up here constantly. Pretty sure it's been posted before exactly written as this

Agreed

I’d rather see a well behaved dog in a shop than a bored frustrated child in a pushchair.

To anyone who missed it on the numerous other threads, dogs and children are not comparable and never will be.

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/10/2023 01:19

FFS someone must have been bored to bring this back 5 months later.

No, it's just really boring, along with the anti cycling and cat threads.

Don’t be ridiculous I have owned dogs for 40 + years and never taken any of them into into cafes, libraries or shops and my dogs are people friendly and behave impeccably in the company of strangers.
I just don’t understand why anyone would want to take their dog shopping. I don’t believe that dogs want to go to John Lewis. Many people don’t like dogs and as dog owners we need to respect this.

VintageTuppence · 29/10/2023 04:25

like when I was younger I assumed dogs weren’t allowed on trains because I’d never see them but now I actively check a carriage for dogs when I step on (if I remember)

I grew up in the colonies on Enid Blyton books and always believed dogs could go anywhere people do in Britain.
… actually I’m suspecting her books might not have been very realistic in many ways.

UpInYourHead · 29/10/2023 05:01

Is it a coincidence that a poster with a few more r’s in their username is a self confessed notorious dog hater, with a lot of posts that are very ‘passionate’ about removing dogs from society in various ways? 🤔

If you don’t want dogs in shops, then complain. They might change their policy, I doubt it though. Whilst dogs are welcomed into shops and cafes, owners will take them. Our local dog friendly cafe gives free dog treats. 😊

Welshphoenix · 02/11/2023 14:19

You have always been able to take down on busses and trains. Two I believe per adult. What are people supposed to do if they need to travel don't drive and have a dog.

KeepJoggingOn · 02/11/2023 14:24

For me it's a joy. I have never seen a badly behaved dog in a store, unlike many rude vile customers. in the future l think seeing dogs in more places will be very common and hopefully these tiresome conversations will be a thing of the past.
