... English primary school... Which school year/age do you think these spellings are suitable for...?

Guess which year these spellings are for

End of year 2 begining of year 3. DD could read all those around Feb of year 2 but might struggle to spell them all correctly.
Do they follow a phonics programme? Some of those words would only appear right towards the end of year 2 at my dds school.

Tailfeather · 08/05/2023 18:32

It says 'read the word' at the top. Not 'learn to spell'.

I suspect this is just the first column and then other columns ask you to write, cover and repeat. At least, this is how my DC's spellings were set out.

Tailfeather · 08/05/2023 18:39

@FourTeaFallOut Mine too, but it was about recognising the words and using them in sentences, not learning to spell them off by heart.

TheGoogleMum · 08/05/2023 18:40

I'm sure I had easier ones than that in Yr 5 but admittedly that was nearly 30 years ago!

Marmite27 · 08/05/2023 18:40

Year 2

WhatNoPeas · 08/05/2023 18:41

I'd have said 6 year olds, so years 1 or 2 based on what my daughter had at her independent school. Current spelling words for her, age 8, are blusterous, alliteration, autobiography and disciple.

Oysterbabe · 08/05/2023 18:41

I would have guessed Y3 too.

Dorisbonson · 08/05/2023 18:41

Year 1 or 2. Depends how good the primary is. If it's a good one, probably year 1.

Sorryyoufeelthatway · 08/05/2023 18:41

Y3

RecklessBlackberries · 08/05/2023 18:42

On the National Curriculum, "sc pronounced as s" and "y pronounced as I in the middle of words" are Year 3/4 rules. Ridiculous to put them in Year 1, however advanced they might be.

Panda89 · 08/05/2023 18:44

Jeez my DD is in y1 and her spellings this week are I, was, his, as
Way too easy for her but all the class get the same (they only started spelling tests last week)

Lastminutebride · 08/05/2023 18:44

year 2?

I'm so surprised at what spellings my year 1 comes home with. I couldn't believe how difficult they are and very much felt she was being set up to fail. She’s one of the youngest in the year and only now in May is she starting to get to grips with them.

Todaynotalways · 08/05/2023 18:44

Tailfeather · 08/05/2023 18:32

It says 'read the word' at the top. Not 'learn to spell'.

There are five steps.

Homework:
Read
Copy
Write without looking
Check and re write

Then spelling test on Friday.

I think they’re very very difficult for a Year 1 class. Could you query them and ask (like a pp said) why they are being tested on spellings so far ahead in the NC?

Dorisbonson · 08/05/2023 18:45

My son is at a UK prep school and there is a range of ability too. You will find some children will have 20 to learn a week and some 10 or 15 depending on their ability. Don't be surprised to have homework every night that's what you are paying for. It builds up to 3 hours a night when they are teenagers.

Ah yes, more succinctly, this!

This is what I was expecting for my year 1 but some we’ve got this week are school, people, echo, their, today. I really was expecting much easier

ChocChipHandbag · 08/05/2023 18:36

JFYI, it's "practising".

Haha 0/10 for ME!

Hocuspocusnonsense · 08/05/2023 18:47

Year 2 my daughter is in yr 2 and she’s had those.

mathanxiety · 08/05/2023 18:48

Year One! She's 5-6?

That's ridiculous. But so are spelling tests for children that age.

In the US, she would be doing phonics at that age, and there would be no spelling tests.

WhatWeDoInTheShadow · 08/05/2023 18:48

Year 3

JMSA · 08/05/2023 18:48

TeenDivided · 08/05/2023 18:15

My dyslexic DD can't spell all of those, so based on that y13. Grin

GrinGrinGrin Love it!

frankgu · 08/05/2023 18:49

Not sure, some are fairly easier which would suggest lower years but ime there are normally patterns to spellings eg word's beginning with psy or ending ous etc.

Amammai · 08/05/2023 18:49

They are challenging for that year group but I assume with an independent school the push for academic excellence begins very early on and the onus is on parents to support with home learning.

To support your daughter, I would concentrate on maybe 5 words from the list each week - really practise those ones and maybe looks over the other five but don’t do lots of extras with them. Then she is more likely to get at least 5/10. 5 might be more manageable to drop in as games etc too.

‘5 minute Mum’ on Facebook/Insta has some brilliant games for practising spellings in a fun way (not just the look, cover, write, check etc, which can be a bit dull for younger kids. Well worth a look!

frankgu · 08/05/2023 18:50

Someone will say their dc could spell that at 6 months though!
